I used to use a couple of older P-Touch models that were designed for business purposes. I would go on labeling sprees throughout the 5 offices that I was responsible for, not only to organize but also to label instructions on equipment and what to never touch.I was unsure of how this personal use model's labels would hold up since they are not laminated. I was very pleasantly surprised. I could not really tell the difference other than the labels are not as thick. Now, a mother of a 2 1/2 year old with an over abundance of toys, I have found this P-Touch perfect for helping me keep things organized. My daughter loves the pictographs, especially the animals; she loves the stars and hearts border functions as well.My only suggestion is to make sure to shut it off ... MoreI used to use a couple of older P-Touch models that were designed for business purposes. Great looking labels if you have the patience of a saint. Not for anyone trying to be efficient. The backing is easily removed from the tape.

Decent label maker at a very good price
25 January 2015

I had been thinking of getting one of these for quite a while, and happened to have some Staples Rewards, so the price got even better. On the plus side, the label maker works great, and even comes with a decent amount of label tape.On the negative side, it's really, REALLY hard to get the backing off of a label after it's printed! I finally figured out that I could use a utility knife or x-acto knife to carefully score through the backing and then peel it away from the label, which was WAY easier than trying to grab an edge with my fingernail or a knife. The PT-90 also eats through batteries fairly quickly. When I first started using it, I threw in some batteries that I had kicking 'round (they were most likely partially used already), and it immediately started to show a"low battery" warning. However, the PT-90 still worked, so I just ignored that. After killing the first set of batteries, I put in a fresh set of Duracell batteries, but was only able to use the PT-90 for a few dozen labels before "low battery" came up again. If you plan to print a lot of labels, you probably want to choose a model that plugs in.

Garbage Label maker. Waste of money IMO
29 January 2015

Bought this cause I wanted a simple label maker to use for small projects. This being a relatively simple model, I figured it would do the job.First off, the labels that are printed out use about 1cm of blank space on each end which wasted tape. There's no real on/off button on this thing so you're never quite sure if its on or not. Tape included with the unit seems flimsy but not sure if replacement tape is the same quality or not. I put in 3 different sets of batteries and each time the unit kept telling me the battery was low.Spent more time figuring out if the unit was working than actually using it. Either pony up more money for a better label maker or hand write labels. This thing is a waste of money.

Not a good product

I have a Brother PT-110 which worked reliably for years. It's been a real workhorse. Last week it stopped working. I bought this PT-90 to replace it. What a disappointment the PT-90 is. I put brand new batteries in the PT-90, printed one label and the display said, "Low Battery!". Another reviewer mentioned this same problem. Compared to the PT-110, the PT-90 is very difficult to use. For example, to change font size on the PT-110 you press Code+Size. Simple. To change font size on the PT-90 you press Fn, right arrow or left arrow multiple times (depending on the last function used), Return, right arrow, Return. Not simple. This can be slightly less complex by pressing Fn+Q (to go directly to the size function), Return, right arrow, Return. This can be slightly less complex by pressing Fn+Q (to go directly to the size function), Return, right arrow, Return. The same is true for most all of the PT-90 functions. On the PT-110 most all functions are simple Key+Key, while on the PT-90 they're all multiple different key presses, sometimes five or more just to make a simple change. All of the functions of the PT-110 are labeled on its keyboard. There's no labeling on the PT-90 keyboard to direct you to any function. When you use a graphic on the PT-90 it doesn't show the graphic on the display. It shows an alphanumeric code instead. The PT-110 shows the selected graphic on the display. It gets worse. While the PT-110 has a smaller display, it is infinitely easier to read. Others have mentioned the problem I have with the PT-90 display. It is very difficult to read unless you're looking straight down on it. Right now I have my PT-110 side by side with my PT-90 on my desktop. The PT-110 display is crystal clear. The PT-90 display is completely unreadable. Every pixel on the PT-90 display is black. I can't make out anything. But if I lean forward and hang my head directly above the PT-90 display, then I can read it. What a pain. The PT-110 display is crystal clear from any angle. I just noticed something funny with the PT-90 display. When you turn it on, the display is crystal clear for a split second. Then all the pixels go black, unless you hang your head directly above the display. The same thing happens when you turn the PT-90 off. The display is crystal clear for a split second before it goes off. I visited the Brother Web site and checked the FAQ list for the PT-90 to see if there is some way to adjust the contrast or viewing angle of the display. I have some other devices with LCD displays that let you adjust the contrast or viewing angle to get the clearest display. Here's the answer I found from Brother: "There is no contrast adjustment on this machine. ... For optimum view, please look at the display directly (not at angle)." So I guess you have to hold the PT-90 straight out in front of you or hover your head directly over it. Not a good design. The ergonomics and user interface of the PT-90 are terrible compared to the PT-110. In fact, they're terrible all on their own. I'm glad the PT-90 only cost me $18. I won't feel so bad now using it as a paperweight. Out of desperation I took my old PT-110 apart and found the problem. A lever that presses the feed roller against the tape had broken. Unfortunately the plastic is polyethylene so you can't glue it. Luckily I was able to work around the broken part by using a bit of cardboard to make a wedge to press the feed roller against the tape. My PT-110 lives on!

Perfect Small Thermal Printer!
22 August 2024

This small thermal printer is perfect for household and garage use. It prints a label that is easily read and to make. I own seven of these perfect little machines because I was always running to get it from the next room. Perfect size to store inside a kitchen drawer or craft area tabletop to ensure an organized space or dated open item in the refrigerator. Brother. I love the PT-90!

So far so good
22 January 2015

I really haven't used it yet. I took it out of the package, put batteries in it, and put the included tape cartridge in. I printed a short label and it came out as expected. The changeable face plate is a bit silly, but I must say I changed out the blue stripe for the green one. I have use similar ones at work (not Brother) so I know what to expect from this type of label. Maybe the real labels (not the shorter included one) have this feature, but what I like about other manufacturer's is that the printed labels have some scheme for peeling the backing off. Some have a cut down the center backing or some have a partial cut in the label when it gets cut off. This makes peeling the backing paper off much easier. Small complaint. I bought it on a special buy price.

Too small, too complicated, expected more.
28 March 2016

I am disappointed. Brothers has always given me satisfaction in their products. Not this time. It starts with the directions which almost require that you have a magnifying glass to read. They are complicated and not intuitive. They fold out like a tiny map with multi-panels that keep trying to fold back on themselves and frustrate your best efforts. The illustrations are minuscule. The unit itself is tiny and should be at least twice the size for ease of use. The feature that they have designed into the unit to peel the tip off to allow you to remove the covering of the adhesive is ridiculous and extremely difficult to use. This was my first label maker, and I bought this basic model because I didn't want to spend a lot until I knew how much I'd use it. But now that I have one, I wish I'd spent more for one that's easier to use. It's very hard to peel off the backing, and I've had no luck with the little peeling slot on the back of the unit, it just mangles the label. That might not sound like a big deal, but it's very annoying! Also, the controls are complicated and it's cumbersome to change styles and fonts and put in symbols like / and +. I finally printed out pages of the manual with the symbols and special formats & keep them handy, because they're just not intuitive at all. But I'll probably upgrade to a model with a USB connection, seems like it will be much easier to format the labels on the PC. Also, I will get one with easy-to-peel tape!
