As I started a big home renovation project, I was looking for a cordless angle grinder (I have 3 corded ones but no cordless). The friendly salesman at my local tool shop asked me was I'd be using it for ; I then realized that I'm mostly using grinders for tasks it "can do" but for which it wasn't specifically designed...He suggested this little guy and I'm sure glad he did! Cutting long gable angles on vinyl siding, trimming aluminium soffit and fascia, notching ceramic tiling, hardwood flooring or composite deck boards has never been easier or cleaner. This little tool does it all, while having great battery life (much better than any grinder). This cut off tool has so much potential, but for me, it just didn’t hit the mark. I didn’t feel like the ease of blade removal was the best it could be, and the instructions barely walk you through that process. This tool is pretty limited in its applications and isn’t what I would grab for general, odd jobs. There isn’t a wood blade, and that’s a pretty limiting factor for a multi-faceted, fun tool like this one. I’m sure it’s great for tight spaces with tile, sheet metal, Hardie siding, etc., but that’s too niche of a window for use. I’d probably opt for DeWalt’s compact circular saw over this cut off tool—for the wood blade and an extra spot for a second hand of control. It smokes if you do attempt cutting wood.

I had my pick of tools to accept to sample and I chose this one so I could work on a project for a friend of mine who is severely handicapped. She had wanted a tray for her walker so she could be able to place items like her lunch or whatever she wanted so she could then bring them to her lift chair and keep her hands free to manage her walker. We had seen some online but the cost of most of them made it prohibitive to purchase. So I went to a box store and purchased a 2 X 4 piece of 1/2 inch plywood and used this little jewel of a saw to make cuts for the handles of the walker to slide through. I did not take any pictures of the finished project as I did not have my drill and hole saw kit to do a better job of it, but the final product was still useful, just not as ... The blades that were furnished with the saw were not ideal for cutting wood but I used it anyway as I could not find a 3" wood cutting blade. Having a shoe on the saw was great. but that dust collector port needs to have an angled port on it so that the sawdust did not go up the users face. But then again I don't think this was ever intended for cutting wood.

The DCS438 is lightweight, but has a powerful brushless motor, which makes it a versatile tool for a wide array of different cutting applications from drywall to tile and even thin steel. The removable dust shroud with adjustable shoe allows precise depth cuts and can be connected to an extractor hose to vacuum away most of the dust created from cutting. Another nice feature is the reversible motor, which allows forward or reverse cutting as appropriate. The included LED light helpfully illuminates the cutting area when in use. An allen wrench for changing the cutoff wheel is included and fits into a holder on the front of the tool, so that it is always readily available when needed. Three different cutoff wheels are included with the tool for cutting various materials and all work great. I have already used the DCS438 for cutting metal, as well as for cutting concrete board and trimming ceramic tile. It has worked well for me and I will definitely be using this tool regularly. I highly recommend it.
Nice lightweight compact unit. Easy to work with. I like the reverse feature so you can control which way the wheel spins, but it does have to turn clockwise for the dust cover to work. Speaking of the cover, be careful when using the shoe to balance when starting a cut, the guard does not lock and will rotate with not much effort. A way to lock it would be better than the friction lock.It comes with a shim in case you use blades with a larger center diameter. I think 10mm & 15mm are the 2 choices. I try to lock it in with the Allen wrench holder, but am pretty sure I am going to eventually loose it.It seems to have plenty of power, but so far I have only cut some light metal strapping and some trim boards. When I was given a choice of tools to sample from I choose this because I needed something to make inside cuts for a project I had planned on doing for a disabled friend. She uses a larger than normal handicap walker and she had wanted a tray on it so that she could bring stuff with her from the kitchen to the living room. We had checked for some online, but they were well over $100, way out of our price range so I used this little jewel to make a tray for her out of some 1/4" sanded plywood. I used the yellow blade boxed in with the saw to cut the wood with. One thing I did not like about the saw was the dust collecting port blowing up the sawdust onto me and also blinding me from being able to see where I was cutting. But had I the bag that is made especially for ... I used the yellow blade boxed in with the saw to cut the wood with. One thing I did not like about the saw was the dust collecting port blowing up the sawdust onto me and also blinding me from being able to see where I was cutting. But had I the bag that is made especially for Dewalt dust collection then I would not have had that problem. One thing I did like was the weight of the saw. It having some heft to it made it easier to cut better lines than something light and when cutting getting knocked off the cutting line. I have no pictures to show the outcome of the project because due to the fact that I was doing this project at her home, I did not have my other tools such as a hole saw kit and a drill. So the rounded cuts I improvised did not come out professionally looking as I would like for it to have. But I was able to get it fitted onto her walker and now she is able to bring the items from her kitchen to the living room to her lift chair so she can sit down in comfort and if needed eat off the tray. I will in time be making changes to this to include a hinge so that when not in use she can flip it down out of the way. the next project I have for this little fellow will be to cut metal to help me make a device for her clothes dryer so that she is able to turn it on from the side of it or front.
Product is a great product from dewalt. I have used the Ryobi comparison and its a great deal more power. Extremely light weight especially with Power Stack battery (DCBP034). The shroud cover add to the value plus with the 3 blades. Yhe different direction switch makes cutting metal easier and safer. One feater i would like to see is maybe a quick blade change system like with makita or Bosch grinders and oscillating tools. Tile cutting blade does over heat a little even with a wet sponge to try cool the blade and tile. Overall the light weight design and power make this a very versatile tool.
Light and compact, fits into tight spaces and easy to control with one hand. Can think of many demo and remodel jobs in the past where this tool would have saved a bunch of time and effort. I've used it to cut copper, PVC and tile. Comes with three blades for all types of materials. Much like my trusty Dewalt Drill/Drivers, this is a tool every homeowner will find themselves using often. The Dust Shroud easily pops off with the push of a button... no hex wrench required. Blades change quickly. It has forward/reverse direction as well, making it even better between joists or tight areas. A true and worthwhile multi-purpose tool.
First I want to apologize for this not being the best review ever, I only got to use my product the 3” cutoff tool one time before my truck was broken into and it was stolen. But with that said the one time I did get to use it, it worked Great! I had to cut a tile backsplash so I could add a outlet in the kitchen of a house. And the 3” cutoff tool worked perfect. I’ve tried with my bigger 4 1/2” cut off tool but it’s just too big and the 3” was just the right size. The only thing that took me a little time to get use to was just how the disc sits off to the side. So it took a second for me to get the feel for it. But other than that it was great! I wish I still had it to use in the future because it made it a lot easier to cut a single gang box into the tile. The ... LOVE! for a long time, I have been using a standard angle grinder to accomplish alot of tasks, from cutting rebar, shortening lolly columns, or even trim profiles. The angle grinder is big, bulky, awkward, and the right grip + holding the material was challenging at times. I have found this cut off tool, really feeds a niche space for simplifying cutting metal, tile, or even drywall. I have had it for about 3 weeks now. I get about little bit more battery usage out of this than the standard angle grinder. It comes with a protective showed as well as the standard metal shroud you see in the picture. I found this very useful when cutting drywall flood lines. This is a catch all cutting tool, that has great power, good power consumption, and great Ergonomics. ...
