I got mine on a discount when Elgato had a sale going.

I use this Elgato for daily live gaming streaming. General performance is good but not great. I initially had some latency hiccups that took a moderate amount of troubleshooting to resolve. I knew the system wasn’t to blame because all hardware is top end gaming components boosted even more for streaming in HD. I knew they software wasn’t solely to blame because I use one of the better OBS builds and it works fine with another brand streaming camera with zero issues and no latency. I know internet wasn't the issue because it's a cat-6 hard-wired gigabit connection typically seeing speeds of over 900Mbps/800Mbps. After a few software tweaks and reboots, the latency stopped and quality is pretty good for 2-3 hours of daily continuous streaming with gaming screen sharing active. Autofocus is fast enough to keep up, color s are rendered well and white balance also good. I use a third-party OBS streaming app, but the Elgato does ship with it’s Stream Deck streaming app with OBS integration. The streaming app is good for new users or those who don’t already have an app. Another included app is the camera management app for fine-tuning camera settings. The camera management app has good basic adjustments but lacks the more granular control I prefer. I included screen shots of both interfaces below. The build is solid with good dust protection from the screen overlaps. The lens dust cover is awkwardly designed and annoying to install and remove. The clamp keeps the camera securely fastened to my monitor and the USB-C to A cable is long enough to reach the PC without stretching or tension. The Elgato isn’t the best streaming camera I’ve used but it’s a good quality cam. It’s not the greatest in dim light while in auto-mode which was a bit of a surprise. Exposure can be adjusted Ito compensate n the camera management app’s manual mode. I figured low light exposure would be better with the “prime” lens but it’s marginally better than decent quality webcams in general. Overall, not a bad camera but just a bit disappointing. Especially compared to our previous cam which was cheaper but almost identical in performance and less prone to performance issues. Nothing ruins a great stream more than laggy video.

Great Camera, Software Needs Work
23 August 2021

FINALLY, Elgato has entered the fray with their rendition of a webcam called the Facecam, and it does not disappoint. They are introducing the first camera with ISO control and record in RAW uncompressed @ 1080p60! You can treat this as a DSLR when you change exposure. ISO and shutter speed are entirely customizable, with your aperture locked at 22mm f/2.4. This lens choice produces an 83.2-degree FOV which isn't that wide for streamers - I'd like to see this closer to 120 degrees. It is a streaming camera and not a webcam as you would expect. This DOES NOT have a MICROPHONE! Therefore, if you are looking for a webcam for conferencing WITH A MIC, this is NOT for you. This DOES NOT have a MICROPHONE! Therefore, if you are looking for a webcam for conferencing WITH A MIC, this is NOT for you. This cam is geared towards those who have ALREADY invested in separate sound equipment (which most streamers do) but want a great image and an easy-to-use interface/controls. The picture quality is excellent in good light (which most streamers have invested in) seamlessly integrates into the Elgato stream deck ecosystem. Build quality feels cheap, but this is all about function to keep down costs!Taking it out of the box, you get the camera, a lens cover, USB-TypeC=>USB-TypeA cord, and monitor mount. When you hold it, it feels VERY cheap and lightweight for $200. It is nothing spectacular design-wise, just a rectangular plastic box with Elgato logos and an obnoxious white "FACECAM" logo on the right of the cam. The first thing I notice is it's HUGE and feels REALLY light and cheap. With regards to size, it is on par with larger ones from Razer, Logitech, and others. The mount is a cheap plastic swivel mount to match the camera. Here, Elgato could have chosen a ball mount instead. However, I am grateful for the 1/4-20" thread mount to use REAL mounting options like tripods and arms. The image quality is a bit soft for my liking but is nothing short of amazing - in good light. You must tweak it in the Camera Hub software (you must download). As the ISO increases and light becomes less, noise and artifacts get worse. For the size, there should have been a light included to offset the price and poor low light performance. If the lens could get to f/1.4 or f/1.8, this would be killer! It has built-in flash memory to save settings ON THE CAMERA and not locally on software. The color balance is off, and there aren't REAL sliders like TINT to finetune for the overly magenta tones I see. Zoom is digital so that you will see EVEN MORE artifacts and noise; then you will NOT be able to reframe your shot in software. The software is the weakest part of the offering, but I will expect this to change. Keying out a green screen is excellent, so no worries there. OBS and other camera software recognize this easily, and I love that!Improvements Needed-The Camera Hub software needs improvement. There is no ability to blur the background or finetune white balance. The noise reduction algorithm needs work, but otherwise, this is a solid 1st rendition of the future of webcams. I use NVIDIA Broadcast since I have an RTX card, but not everyone will use that. The software is the weakest link so far and should be addressed ASAP.-Add lighting to the HUGE box of emptiness. There is a lot of unused space here, and I would like to see lighting to compensate for the low-light performance.-Add autofocus or optical zoom. You took away a mic but didn't add anything useful. Other webcams in this range have autofocus AND mics.-Add optical zoom or fix digital noise on the sensor with better software.-Include a better mount. You make great ball mounts that could have been included here or even a mini tripod mount as other companies do.This is an excellent addition to the Elgato streaming lineup too! It allows for integration using the FaceCam plugin to control settings with the press of a button. Things like zoom, exposure, resetting, etc., are just a button preset away on your StreamDeck to make streaming easier. The ONLY thing currently not supported in the plugin is ISO control using StreamDeck. In all, there are lots of things to like here, but it is still very new. There are lots of software updates that need to be done to allow for more finetuning of the RAW uncompressed footage. If you can look past the cheap plastic build, you will have something nice here. Remember there is NO MIC, so do not buy this only to complain about that later.

Great HD webcam upgrade that doesn't add weight

Adding high quality video to your streams and meetings doesn’t get easier. The Elgato Facecam is a higher end webcam with sharp optics, outstanding video processing, and plug-and-play simplicity. Simply install the Camera Hub app, plug in the camera, and you’re pretty much good to go. The app itself is pretty straightforward as well, with options for changing field of view, picture quality, exposure, noise reduction, and so forth. All the adjustments happen quickly with a live preview window so you can see exactly how your changes affect the image, but honestly, I didn’t need to mess with any of it. The picture quality was excellent right out of the box and I’m astounded at how well it works with poor and low lighting. I have 2 LED light stands that I usually have to use for a good image, but I don’t need to use them at all with the Facecam. The automatic exposure and video adjustments are quick, seamless, and really help ensure you don’t miss an important moment.Outside of being ultra simple to set up, I think my favorite feature of the camera is the lens. Elgato makes a big deal out of the optical sharpness, which is solid, but what I love is that it doesn’t round out faces or alter proportions. Meaning, the camera doesn’t seem to add that infamous 20lbs and I greatly appreciate that. Some people might scoff that it’s not 4k, but that’s not a level of ultra detail that I want zoomed in on my face. 1080p is just the right level of sharpness, is crisp, bright, and very smooth at 1080p60. The Facecam includes a fold out clasp to mount it on top of a monitor, but the body also has a standard size camera thread, so it can be mounted on any regular tripod, ball head, slider, etc… for a flexible range of mounting options. From Zoom meetings to Twitch, it seems like being on camera is more inevitable by the day, so it’s good to have one that’s flattering. If you’re looking for an easy upgrade to your live streaming experience, I highly suggest the Elgato Facecam. It puts out outstanding quality video right out of the box, makes seamless automatic adjustments, and is very simple to set up. Great job Elgato!

Manual Settings allow this Camera to Shine

First thing to know about this camera, is that it’s not an “all in one” webcam suitable for everyone. The focus here is on image quality and image configurability, primarily for content creators or streamers. You can definitely use this for your Zoom or Microsoft Teams calls also, but Elgato is targeting a more specific audience with this Facecam, similar to most of their other products. Main feature missing from this camera in that regard is an onboard microphone. Any audio will need to come form a different dedicated source, a mic or headset etc. Elgato is focusing on the image here, not the sound. And for most content creators, audio is not coming from the camera anyway, so the audience for this camera shouldn’t miss that feature. And for most content creators, audio is not coming from the camera anyway, so the audience for this camera shouldn’t miss that feature. However if you were planning to pick this up to use in Zoom or Teams etc., be prepared to have your own audio source. With that said, the video quality is very good. It might take a bit to get there, but once you have it dialed in, the video image is awesome. Right out of the box you can plug and play with any Windows or Mac PC that offers a USB 3.0 connection. You cannot use this camera without USB 3.0. That’s because the video output from the camera is uncompressed, meaning much larger video data passing from the camera to your PC. But that uncompressed video feed allows you so much flexibility in being able to dial in your settings and image quality in whatever video capture or post processing software you’re using, since the latency is super low and the video does not need to be re-encoded. Once plugged in you can use straight away with the camera on full auto for exposure, white balance, etc., or you can download the Elgato Camera Hub app and fine tune your camera picture.I found that I needed to adjust some things in the Camera Hub app before I was 100% satisfied with the video quality. To start with, the camera seemed to over expose my setting. I tried being lit with natural light from the front, the side, tried in a darker room or lit with ring lights. In every case, leaving the exposure on full auto never worked to my liking, I always looked too washed out when brightly lit, or too noisy with low light. The Camera Hub allows you to fine tune your image quality to match your setting perfectly, which I think is where this camera shines. I’m not sure any other comparable webcam out there right now allows this much configurability. You can edit the FOV, from a pretty decent 82 degrees, to more tight zoomed in ranges to put focus on you. You can adjust the contrast and saturation of the image, as well as sharpness levels. Be warned though, that setting the sharpness above 2 (range is 1-4) you begin to get really harsh edges and more noise. Where I found the most time spent, was in the Settings for Exposure and White Balance. It just would not expose my settings well, using the latest firmware, so the app allows you to dial in your own exposure to match your scene. You can adjust the shutter speed, ISO and exposure meter, and even allow for EV compensation +/-. So no matter what type of lighting you have, you can always adjust. White balance tended to automatically make my shot really warm and gave me more reddish skin tone. But you can set you own temperature, and for cool tones that I like, I found 3900K worked the best. You do also have the option to turn on Noise Reduction to remove any noise or grain from your shot, but I found this was overly aggressive and tended to make the image blurry, so I always left noise reduction turned off, and adjusted other settings until I was happy. The camera has a Sony STARVIS sensor, which is used in things like security cameras and car dashcams, when image quality, especially in low light is needed. And comparing the Facecam to other 1080p webcams, its immediately apparent that the picture quality here is top notch. And the star of the show is the full 60fps. This allows the image to look most natural, no ghosting or blurred movements. Your capture will look buttery smooth. The focus is also fixed, not auto. That is huge to me, in that any movement in your frame will not cause the camera to hunt and search for a new focus point, sometimes making your image blurry for a few seconds. Fixed focus means that everything remains in focus all the time. The build quality is very good, very sturdy, but it’s not minimalist, you notice it. The huge all glass optics and Sony sensor are coupled with onboard flash storage and a dedicated image processor wrapped in its own custom heat sink. The flash storage is a great feature, because you can Save your most used settings in the Camera Hub app, and they write directly to the camera. So if you swap your camera to another PC, your settings are preserved. In my use, I found this worked most of the time. Some times the settings would appear unchanged and right where I saved them, other times some settings would be set back to default, like FOV or picture settings like contrast and saturation. I haven’t found out if that is a PC side issue somehow or camera side. But nice to know you have the ability to swap machines and keep your settings dialed in, when it works. You can set the camera on your monitor or it also has a tripod mount on the bottom for easy placement.Once you get the settings dialed in, this camera shines. I did feel though, that I needed to spend a little too much time in the settings to get the picture to my liking. The auto settings were just not good at all, even when I was in a lit setting with full natural light. I found that even when dialed in manually, I had to set the EV compensation to a -1 to -2. But overall, the video quality is some of the best I’ve seen in this webcam space.

Might Be Good, But for Me Nope

So this thing has been the most frustrating webcam experience I've ever had. I got this specifically to use mostly with GeForce to record while playing games. Unfortunately, this camera is somehow one of the extremely few cameras that is not compatible with GeForce. Turns out a lot of other people ran into this problem as well. If you try to use it, it will turn on and record but it only records in green and magenta, so you get a feed that is just green and purple, and the feed also freezes throughout. Downloading the driver was a mess too, turns out you can't download it on FireFox. If you get this, make sure to use Chrome or something other than FireFox. Shame too, it's a very nice webcam it just has so many issues that affect what I wanted to use it for that it ... MoreSo this thing has been the most frustrating webcam experience I've ever had. But if you specifically intend to use this at all with GeForce, it just doesn't work, and Nvidia and Elgato both have not fixed it, this has been an issue since November of last year so I don't expect either of them to fix it at this point. Huge bummer.

Solid stuff, but not w/o a couple hiccups

The good:- Solid picture quality in well-lit rooms, but it diminishes significantly in low light or poorly-lit environments.- Manual focus is great, but the controls could be a bit more granular.- Software is great. Features aren't super extensive, but they aren't anemic, either, and they're well laid-out. Being able to save your settings directly to the camera instead of having to readjust them w/ each new computer is a fantastic feature I wish more webcams had.The 'meh':- Lens cap is very secure, but to the point it's actually a pain to remove. The bad:- Severe fragmenting issue occasionally when powering on. Requires numerous software and/or hardware resets to resolve (sometimes two, sometimes ten).- Saving settings occasionally completely fudges them. ... MoreThe good:- Solid picture quality in well-lit rooms, but it diminishes significantly in low light or poorly-lit environments.- Manual focus is great, but the controls could be a bit more granular.- Software is great. Only solution seems to be setting everything up again and hoping the camera behaves.- Pricey. If you use webcams only on occasion or mostly for video chatting, go for something cheaper (maybe w/ a built-in mic). If you need a decent webcam for streaming or other video content creation, this is a solid option.

The Best Webcam for Gamers
28 August 2021

Elgato continues to dominate in the streaming gear world, with their already excellent capture cards, which I use frequently during streams. It was only a matter of time before they launched a camera and it doesn’t disappoint. In the box you’ll find the webcam, with an attached monitor stand, a USB C to A cable for connecting the camera to your PC, a safety manual, and a quick start guide. The Facecam is plug and play, and doesn’t require any advanced installation, as Windows detects it immediately for use. The camera is compatible with most, if not all, use cases when needing a webcam, and thus far has worked on Discord, OBS, Teams, and Zoom during my use. The included stand is easily removed from the ¼ inch thread on the bottom, and the camera can be reinstalled ... MoreElgato continues to dominate in the streaming gear world, with their already excellent capture cards, which I use frequently during streams. The camera is compatible with most, if not all, use cases when needing a webcam, and thus far has worked on Discord, OBS, Teams, and Zoom during my use. The included stand is easily removed from the ¼ inch thread on the bottom, and the camera can be reinstalled on most third-party camera stands or tripods with a standard thread mount. For the size of the camera, it’s surprisingly light while not feeling cheap. While the external housing is made of plastic, the build quality is as expected for a device from Elgato. The lens is quite large, and the lens cap is easily removed and reinstalled, but keep in mind that it doesn’t stay tethered on the camera. The only downside is the risk of misplacing the lens cap, and I wish there was a way to keep the cap with the camera.Picture quality is surprisingly great, with some graininess seen, but detail is much clearer when compared to other more popular options as this benefits from a Sony sensor, with up to 1080P at 60 FPS captured. The only camera that was able to best the Facecam picture was a DSLR that I used previously, using a Camlink, which has replaceable lenses, but maxes at 30 FPS. Unlike my DSLR, this doesn’t suffer from overheating after an hour of use, and didn’t ever feel hot to the touch after a long session. The viewing angle is more than sufficient to capture you as you play games and stream on OBS (approx. 82 degree view). As I stated before, this is a plug and play camera and will work even if you don’t install the Camera Hub software available from Elgato. However, with the app you’re able to adjust the field of view up to “83.2” degrees, the contrast, saturation, sharpness, exposure and white balance. The app even has a “Noise Reduction” option, which makes the picture appear a bit more like a smooth like filter you’d find on any popular camera app. You can also set the resolution in the app from a low of 540p up to 1080p 30/60.Low light tends to be the killer for most webcams, making it difficult, at times, to set up a chroma (green-screen) appropriately. The facecam seems to be able to work well with lower light, although you may notice some noise in the picture. Setting up with a proper key light or making sure your room is properly lit will alleviate this during use, but can be tweaked within OBS or the Camera Hub app. There also isn’t any mic included on the Facecam, so keep that in mind if you’re not using this for game streams and don’t already have an external microphone. This is likely because most gamers tend to have a headset or external mic during streams; offering a much better sound capture. Elgato also makes a really great microphone, if you'd like an all Elgato experience.Overall, Elgato knocked it out of the park with this camera. It’s easily the best streaming webcam I’ve ever used, and this one made it easy to disconnect my DSLR for a better streaming experience. The Camera Hub app isn’t required to use the camera, but makes small picture tweaks possible if your conference software lacks picture quality settings. While this is priced a bit higher than most generally available webcams, the quality of the picture and ease of use make this an easy recommendation to fellow gamers and content creators, or those looking for a better webcam.

The product is held down by its' software.

I bought this camera to do two things: The first is to record college classes, and the second was to entertain my friends. I could do neither, in the end the Elgato Facecam requires you to download a piece of software called "Elgato Camera Hub" and this is where the problems begin. The hub acts as a way for you to manage image quality and settings, and the hardware is amazingly clear and precise, but the hub cannot record and isn't meant to. You can ONLY use another program with the Hub active because it's (what I assume) what creates the image from the camera. Activating the camera using a program like your default Windows 10 Camera app will result in a screen telling you to activate the Elgato Camera Hub. However, even with the hub ACTIVE it will give you the same message, rending programs like OBS Studio unable to work with it without constantly turning the Hub off and on repeatedly. To make matters worse, any program that uses motion capture like PrprLive or VTube Studio will NOT be allowed to pick up motion on the camera for the same reasons as OBS will not work. Elgato needs to change this, they need to make stable software that is able to WORK with any program that needs it. The fact that the Hub renders the camera useless is a crime, and the fact that their helpdesk mentions nothing of what to do in these scenarios is merely a slap in the face.
