Other thoughts: This is a GREAT product. Converters for live streaming a video camera signal run $300-$thousands. The price for this is half of the low end converter, easier to use, produces better video/sound than the more expensive converter that I RMA’d, and it’s a LOT easier to set up and configure. The shortcoming that needs to be fixed across the board is device recognition and perhaps working with the big third party capture/streaming software companies to better ensure integration. The easier to use and integrate your hardware with someone else’s software, the better for customers, the better for you. The issue of supporting external audio and synching it with the video feed is a product of my own manufacture, so I won’t gig the makers of Elgato Capture HD for that.

Great product with one major flaw.

The Elagato Game Capture HD is. Good product that provides excellent game capture performance. If you plan on streaming though, it is not the best option on the market due to the delay between gameplay and stream. Trying to match the delay with webcams and microphones is a bit of a chore but possible depending on what software you use. Even once you have synched your sources though, the extra delay is noticeable to viewers due to your reactions to the chat being delayed by a big margin. If you are wanting to capture and stream retro consoles(basically any SD console) this is what you should pick up as most other capture devices wont handle old sources, this one works a charm though. You will get picture via the software on your computer but the aforementioned lag between device and software means you cant play windowed via your pc.In summary, if you are streaming and don't want to use retro consoles, get the more expensive versions instead. Otherwise this is a really good capture device.

I Love It!
11 June 2017

I have been an Xbox Gamer for about 5 years. I was able to officially get my own console and play more efficiently.I never worked with a capture card before. So I was completely new to the experience. I really love it. I am able to record and save and edit on the program for the capture card that you have to download, it keeps everything I record downloaded and it saves automatically.I do a lot of editing videos for clips of my gaming skills and others I game with as well and when I bought it, It was a really AWESOME price and way cheaper then Amazon, BestBuy, and Gamestop. I bought it for $125.00. I would recommend it to others as well. Real easy to use even for beginners.

Incredible Quality
28 June 2017

I got this as a gift a few years back, and while I don't have extensive experience with game capture cards, this one definitely fits the bill. The recording quality is incredible, and I'd watch the videos multiple times simply to marvel in the quality. I may be raving, but it is definitely worth it. I hope it works for PC gaming too, but I assume you'd need to comps for that, and I have yet to be able to test it. Nevertheless, I love it. The only critique I can currently give is that I'm not sure PC gaming can be recorded with it. But we'll see. Anyway, 5 stars from me.

Update to very good
19 June 2013

I wanted to update my previous review since I've had much more time with the device. At the time of my last review I had been using Windows 8 and experience problems with the OS itself. I was unable to use Movie Maker as an alternative at that time but after giving up on the Monstrosity of Windows 8, I went back to Win 7 and everything functioned as it should. The Movie Maker integration is nice because you have more control over the final file but it still lacks some features as well. In the end, if it would simply capture to one file it would give us geeks more options with how we encode the final file. The ideal method would be to go from mpeg2 to mp4 once and be done. As of now we have to go from mpeg2 to mp4 and then our final file which for me would be mp4 so the process is converting the mpeg2 capture files to one big mp4, and then it's converted to the lower mp4 bit-rate which is sort of silly because it's twice the processing..lol.. All in all though I am quite pleased with the product. I get very good results with Movie Maker so I'll keep using it as long as I have to. I do hope they enable an option to capture to a single file in the future. Movie Maker is slow when compared to other programs. UPDATE on the HP dc7900 Core 2 Duo E8400 Ultra-slim Desktop I bought to use with it. The processor is at 3ghz and is BARELY enough to capture full 1080 on max quality while retaining audio/video sync. I ended up backing it down to 27Mbps for the capture to be able to maintain sync properly. You should be able to watch the capture on a separate screen with perfect sync(expect a 1-2 second delay from the source). Sync will start to go before the video gets choppy so keep that in mind if you're trying this on a less powerful system. The minimum system requirement will NOT allow you to capture full 1080. Hope this helps someone make a decision.

Webcasting Wonder
25 June 2015

This is my second Elgato Game Capture HD. Unlike most owners, I don't use it to capture games. I use it to broadcast live content (e.g. lectures) on the web. It's a great little device for that. You simply hook up an HD camcorder, blend in some audio from a microphone or other sound source, and you're good to go! You can even record the event you're broadcasting to disc for editing and a later upload to YouTube. Elgato's software is easy to use and it does the job well. This digitizer also works with other software like Open Broadcaster. I tried it, but I like the Elgato software better.

I had purchased a little over a year ago the Avermedia Live Gamer HD (PCI-e Capture Card) and it had worked well until about a week ago. Any system it was plugged into would cause Windows (10) to bluescreen before it reached the Login Screen. So for a replacement i decide to get this and it so far it is a much better choice. The biggest issues i encountered with the Avermedia that was fixed with the Elgato: -Needed a desktop PC to capture with. Makes it a bit of a pain if you wanted to capture a game system in a different location. (ie playing Wiiu in one room with a smaller tv and wanting to play Xbox one in the living room. You get the idea) - Capturing anything that was not HDMI. If you wanted to capture say a Nintendo 64 it was possible but not easy. I ended up buying 3 different RCA->HDMI converters before i found one that worked. And even that only worked if i plugged the HDMI into the input of the Xbox one. in other words N64- > HDMI Coverter -> Xbox One HDMI Input -> Capture Card. Man what a debacle. - Audio Sync Issues. The Avermedia Live Gamer HD captured in a "Variable Frame Rate" Meaning if the game dipped below 30fps/60fps the capture card did as well. Using media info you could see a clip that had a max FPS of 30 and min of 12 fps. This means using Adobe Premiere to edit you would loose audio sync almost instantly. Using handbrake to render it at a constant Frame rate would correct this a little but i found it still tended to fall out of sync after about 20 min. Using the elgato i found it would loose sync after about an hour. Now that is much better! That being said! This problem was not apparent in Final Cut Pro on Mac and would keep in sync for a very long time with the Avermedia. -Capturing PS3 is easy! For once. It's not HDMI so the quality isn't the absolute best but it works! HDCP made it difficult with the Avermedia. Issues with the Elgato that the Avermedia solved. -System demand. That little USB capture card kicks a PC's rear end when it comes to CPU usage. The PCI-e card makes system usage very low. (5-10% CPU Usage. Disk usage was very similar between the two) This makes it much harder to play a game and record/stream it on the same pc. -The overall video quality was better on the Avermedia. Picture was more crisp (assuming due to larger bandwidth availability with the PCI bus.) Overall i am very impressed with the Elgato. As nice as the quality was on the Avermedia the large backwards compatibility and the constant frame rate vs. the variable frame rate makes this the capture card for me! If you are someone who will be playing nothing but newer consoles that use HDMI (Xbox 360/One, Ps4, Wiiu, PC) then the Avermedia Live Gamer HD may be the better choice! I will also be doing a comparison on my YouTube Channel Tee Stains if you would like to see a side by side comparison in video quality!
