Amazing Lens!

A smaller lens than expected for the GFX system, about the size of a RF 50mm 1.2 L. But the results are spectacular! Sharp from edge to edge, high contrast, and smooth out of focus areas. My only negative for the lens is the auto focus is slow, it struggles to keep up with even moderately quick moving subjects with the GFX 100 II. I knew this shortcoming going into it so it isn’t a major detriment. In my opinion this is a must-have lens for the system, F1.7 in a mid-telephoto is a great general purpose lens.

I don't get the people complaining about the lens being slow and noisy. This is Medium Format, everything is bigger and slower. This is not the gear you buy for action shots, you buy it for the amazing picture quality unmatched by anything full format has to offer. And this lens delivers all that while having just the right focal length for street photography. For those that have been around like I have, you didn't buy a Pentax 67 for shooting action either. Horses for courses.

Extremely sharp and bright.

Extremely sharp and bright. Very fine and tactile manual focus control, even in low light conditions. Every image is portfolio quality. Easier for landscape than for macro, due to the shallow depth of field which is a double edged sword. A must have for GFX system.

Great lens and highly recommended!

The Fujifilm GF 55/1.7 lens is one of the best lenses among the GF line. It is very sharp even wide open. With F1.7 aperture it is a great lens for portraiture even in dark environment. The size of the lens is a little bit bulky but OK on my GFX 50R body. The focusing is agile but a little bit noisy.

It’s not what I need
27 February 2024

I rented the GF 55mm lens to see if I needed to purchase one. Renting allowed me to see that I didn’t need it. I’m not doing weddings or portraits, for one thing. My copy of the GF 35-70mm lens will satisfy my needs instead of the GF 55mm lens. The GF 55mm lens is more than twice as heavy also, which played a role in my decision to not purchase the GF 55mm lens.

Optically flawless
15 August 2024

Optically, this lens is basically flawless. Zero CA, beautiful bokeh, deeply saturated colors and incredible sharpness wide open. The build is solid metal and it is a reasonable weight and length. The AF motor is noisy and it doesn't silently snap to focus like a top tier FF lens. That said - the GFX is not a fast camera and not remotely ideal for sports photography. That's not really what the camera is designed to do best, so this lens being slower has no meaningful impact on workflow or handling. For landscape and portraiture the AF is more than adequate. It just sounds kind of like an old fashioned Nikon 85mm (though not as scratchy). At the end of the day, the focus is reliable and the hit rate is high.More to the point - the FOV, bokeh, colors and rendering ... MoreOptically, this lens is basically flawless. Perfect lens for GFX-100S
21 October 2023

A very generous friend asked me what I wanted for a present and I said this lens. As a lover of shallow depth of field, this lens is a marvel. Equivalent to about a 44mm 1.4 in full frame, it's incredible at separating a subject from its background. I have the GF 45mm 2.8 and while that is a bit wider, this is the superior lens. The 45 is a great lens, but this matches my 110mm F2 for that WOW factor. In fact, if you want to start off with a pair of lenses, I suggest this 55 and the 110. It's worth every penny. The detail, the texture you will get in combination with the GFX-100S is incredible. The 77mm filter size also matches the 110. It's not a light lens and does not have IS but the Image stabilization in the GFX-100S allows me to hand hold this down to 1/8 of a ... MoreA very generous friend asked me what I wanted for a present and I said this lens. If I could find any negative, it would be in focusing close and wide open. Depth of field is so shallow at 1.7 , especially as you get closer that you're going to find a fair number of missed shots.

So close to perfect, but one questionable decision
25 October 2023

Using this on an GFX100ii, and the first thing that stands out is the rather loud dc motor.Loud enough that you could definitely hear it in a quiet room. If the motor has to change focus from a close to far object, it makes a moderately loud grinding noise similar to a mid 2000 HP inkjet printer when rolling out a printed paper. This is especially obvious when turning the camera on and off.It also makes a honking noise(?) that also vibrates the body when trying to acquire focus. When using it in manual mode, it will make awkward put-put-put sounds. Not as loud as the grinding, and not as noticeable in a quiet room, but it's there.AF speed is relatively average at best. I think it was a bad idea for Fujifilm to advertise this lens with the 100ii when one of the 100ii's main attractions is improved autofocus! It will occasionally pulse back and forth when acquiring focus. Moving objects has a relatively low hit rate, but for slower (walking) subjects the AF is generally fine. When images are in focus the results are incredibly beautiful!Lovely Bokeh, Haven't noticed much aberrations, vignetting, or distortion, and it's extremely sharp!Weight and size fits well with the 100ii, a little chunky but fits well in hand, excellent build quality. If Fujifilm released this in a revised version with Linear Motors, I would sell this one and buy that in a heartbeat!Pros:-Extremely sharp-Very little aberrations-Very little vignetting-Very little distortion-Well built feeling and perfect tactile aperture ring-Weight is just at the limit of daily carry for me-Lens hood not as huge as 80mm or 110mm-1.7 aperture very sharp for areas in focusCons:-Autofocus slow and loud.

Works Great for Me
14 January 2024

I read so many negative reviews about this lens having manual focusing problems that I almost didn’t get it, but for me it’s been fine. Perhaps there’s been a firmware update since the original spate of reviews because it’s as smooth as every other Fuji lens at this point. Autofocus seems to be fine as well, though I don’t use it much. As for subject tracking, I wouldn’t know. Image quality-wise it’s as fantastic as everyone says. I could only afford one lens and I’m very happy I chose this one.
