All that great Hill's nutrition, and flavor, too!

Our home has been blessed with a kitty for as long as I can remember, but none of them was ever as picky an eater as our present Siamese, so when she was diagnosed with renal disease I figured we were in for a tough time food-wise. Surprise! When we opened her first bag of Hill's k/d Chicken Dry Cat Food she acted as if she'd received the feast of a lifetime! Thank you, Hill's, for caring! We knew the top-notch nutrition was there; now we know the flavor is, too!

There are three areas I want to cover with this review. 1. Our 8 year old shelter tortie, Rayne, went to the vet for minor surgery. Apparently, something went wrong during the surgery and she came out of it with ARF, Acute Renal Failure, which given her particular circumstances would be fatal about 60% of the time. Fortunately after a few days of treatment, kidney function was restored. Rayne's only food now is Hill's prescription diet k/d. She has used it for about 18 months. Her regular vet checkups (different vet) show her kidney functioning to be fine. Luckily,Rayne loves k/d and certainly chows it down. There may be a reason she likes k/d...she had eaten exclusively prescription c/d for the few years prior. This leads to area number... 2. A few years earlier, Rayne had a couple episodes of running to her litter box every few minutes in obvious discomfort. Medication from her vet took care of the problem, but it returned a few months later. The vet said her urine showed to be exceptionally heavily crystalized, and she put Rayne on Hill's prescription c/d. The problem was cured practically overnight and never returned. We had some concern that Rayne having to use k/d rather than c/d would result in crystals again but such has not been the case. Apparently the prescription k/d takes care of both issues, at least in Rayne's case. And now for the third... 3. Obviously, we would be very pleased with Hill's solely based on how well our cat has done on the prescription foods. But wait! There is even more! Our vet gave us a discount coupon or two for the prescription food. And, well, as disorganized as I am, I misplaced them long enough for the expiration date to come and go. Figuring nothing ventured, nothing gained, I wrote to Hill's aobut my coupon tale of woe. The response I was given was both gracious and vey generous. Without question, the folks at Hill's will do whatever they can to keep pets healthy and pet parents happy. Thank you so much Hill's

Cans from Petsmart with T1431131B 165 27226 stamp, spoon of food picture on label and "Hydrolyzed chicken flavor" smell awful and are a sloppy liquid mess; cat won't touch it. When I talked to customer service rep I was told nothing had changed and to send a picture.

Good experience
26 June 2021

My two 15 year old Birmans have accepted this food without much fuss and are eating steadily. It is expensive but also has a lot more calories than the regular food, so they don't need to eat as much. It's been a couple of months and we haven't been back for updated labs yet, but they seem a little perkier. I'm ordering my third bag now. They are much happier with this dry food than the wet Hill's K/D, unfortunately. Why not five stars? I guess I would reserve that for something they really loved and absolutely scarfed down. But four stars is respectable and I recommend this product.

Great taste - slow shipping
23 May 2019

My cat was forced to switch to this prescription cat food when he was diagnosed with kidney disease a few months ago. I was scared at first because he is the pickiest cat on earth. He has never in 17 years eaten anything besides his Purina chicken kibble. Never has he liked or eaten a canned cat food, cat treat or human food. I have tried many times to tempt him with other offerings to no avail. Fortunately he liked this immediately from the first bite and made a complete switch to this brand in less than a week. My only complaint is the slow shipping from Petco. They didn't even ship my order for 5 days after I placed it. So make sure you order in plenty of time to receive your food so that you don't run out.

New formula unappealing
23 March 2023

My cat has been on the Prescription kd chicken food for 6 years. He loved it. Was always excited to eat. With the new formula change, he wants nothing to do with the food now. He barely eats any of it and as a result is losing weight. He had been to the vet when we bought this most recent bag with the formula change. At that appointment all his kidney numbers were good and stable.. The only change is the food itself. Please go back to the previous formula.

Rx food lowered high lab readings
16 October 2020

Hills Science Diet K/D dry small kibble for my cat has such a teriffic taste &Mr. Picky loves it. My cat for his first 3 years of life snubbed so many foods dry and wet I was skeptical that he would even try the new food that now the vet wanted him on for his kidney disease. He loves the wet and dry chicken so much. His lab reports are now (high) normal instead of in the high dangerousLevel. I will keep checking his labs with blood work and we will keep up with thisSpecific food because of the good results. My cat has a disgnosis of chronic kidney disease at 4yo.

Taste
27 July 2021

My cat was very hesitant to eat it even when it was mixed with his old food, so assuming it's not palatable. I have noticed he is urinating less, which I believe it's a good sign. He's been on it for about 2 weeks. I wish the price was more affordable. It is double the price and half the amount of his previous food. Have not repeated bloodwork/urine analysis so not sure it is working, but my vet assures me it makes a difference.

Used to be great. New formula. Cat won't eat it.
19 March 2023

I have used Hill's products for almost 40 years but will need to change. Have one on non-prescription urinary and they changed formulas and a problem. Now, the K/D Chicken for another one of my cats who has eaten it for 10 years will not touch the new formula. Hill's needs to stick to the original solid formulas or lose customers. At $75 a bag, I can't waste money on inconsistent cat food.

redesign of kibble?
8 November 2022

About a year ago, I noticed that my cats were making a terrible racket when they ate the k/d dry cat food. It sounded like grinding gears. At the same time I started finding their bowls pushed all over the place and all these tiny fragments of the kibble in the bowl. I think there's been a redesign of the kibble shape possibly and it was hard for them to pick up and chew. Now I have to pick out the kibble fragments every time I re-fill their bowls. I would still recommend the product because it does seem to help their kidney function.
