One of my four cats was near death because he had a significant liver issue with much jaundice and almost non-functioning kidneys. I have another cat in the household that had urinary surgery seven years ago and must eat a urinary diet; they had prescribed CD but kidney cat was vomiting every time he ate and refused to eat kidney diet. I was at my wits end with trying to keep the two cats healthy and had bought just about every brand at the store but kidney cat refused to eat or drink. I did two things....I found some green treats online that he would eat and gave them to him like food as if he didn't start eating he would need a feeding tube. He still was so weak that he couldn't jump and had problems walking; after three vets had suggested he might need to call it quits I was pretty discouraged and considering the possibility that it was time for him to be out of misery but I just wasn't ready to give up on him until I had exhausted all the options. Then I came upon this food (which is not recommended for "kidney" cats) and he ate a few bites! I was thrilled and vet determined that urinary cat could eat this so I started feeding all of my cats this food and so far so good. Kidney cat is still not up to his perfect weight but he has lost his jaundice and he plays and jumps like he did before he was sick. Not sure about quantity of life with his problem but quality is definitely back and we're hoping that this keeps him around and feeling good for as long as possible. I am not saying that any food will cure a problem like his but I am encouraging anyone who is in a dire situation with an animal to consider some possibilities that are beyond the usual if the usual is not working.

Once a cat has developed urinary crystals the safest thing to do is to feed a diet specially formulated to reduce magnesium. Be that as it may, one thing the big companies watch very closely are sensible mineral profiles. Some of the brands that purport to include the most meat also provide an excess of certain minerals that will do more harm than good for a cat that has chronic issues. So as long as you can overcome your biases about gluten and grain, a food like this is the safest choice. Now I happen to be a fan of Purina but I feed this to my two cats who have had episodes of urinary crystals. Why? Because for some reason the Purina OTC urinary formulas (dry) are *very* high in calories, over 450 a cup. My indoor cats would gain way too much weight eating them regularly. This SD formula comes in at only 320 calories/cup so I can feed them more without them getting fat. So this is the only dry food they get and for many months now they've been healthy with no recurrence of the urinary problems. I have noticed that they usually drink water immediately after eating it. I suppose SD is deliberately making them thirsty so they get the extra water they need to flush out their system.Frankly, I wish I could go back to feeding a less expensive product but this is a lot cheaper than a visit to the vet and.

I had purchased this item on sale because I noticed my new long hair foster fail rescue was throwing up mucsy hairballs. I have never had a long hair cat before so I thought hairball control would help. She loved it, but it was a little more pricey than I could handle so I purchased a different brand that again was not on the cheap side, but cheaper than this product. She ate it only as a last resort, obviously did not like it and she started vomiting mucus hairballs again. I went back to the Hill's Science product, Fuzzy loves it, she does not vomit anymore and is a much happier kitten. It is well worth the extra cost to find a product that works so well and that Fuzzy likes. I would absolutely recommend this product.

Game Changer - No More Hairballs!!!!
2 January 2024

We have 2 cats and 2 young dogs, and one of our cats with long hair used to regularly vomit hairballs and bits of cat food on our staircase every day. This continued for at least a year, and finding a solution seemed impossible. Initially, I considered food additives, but I wanted a simpler solution that wouldn't disrupt our cats' low-maintenance feeding routine (we typically kept their food bowl filled with kibble, and they seemed content with that).Faced with the challenge of having both cats and dogs, I was skeptical about introducing any special feeding routines. However, tired of constantly cleaning up hairballs and vomit before the dogs could get to it, I decided to make a change about six months ago. I dedicated some time to figuring out how to shift our cats to a morning feeding routine alongside the dogs, allowing for the introduction of a canned breakfast. Now, each morning, our cats eagerly run downstairs, anticipating their quarter can of Adult Urinary Hairball Control food (I give each cat only 1/4 of the 5.5 oz can per day in the morning). This simple adjustment has made a significant impact, almost completely eliminating the vomiting issue. We now only have to deal with one hairball vomit a month, a massive improvement from the previous daily, sometimes twice a day, occurrences. The cats are noticeably happier, and their personalities shine through, expressing their appreciation for the extra treat each day. It seems they're not just happier but also feeling better. In addition to the canned breakfast, we've incorporated the same Adult Urinary Hairball Control solid food, keeping their bowl filled at all times. They seem to enjoy that as well.

Hill's Science Diet - Urinary Hairball Control
25 August 2024

My cat is the definition of a finicky eater. He doesn't like chunky food and will drink the juice around the chunks. If the smell is strong, he backs up. He really just prefers his dry food. My problem with that is he doesn't drink enough water and gets urinary track infections. I think this is in part to not drinking enough water. I have been trying to switch to half dry and half wet. This food is good for my cat because it doesn't have an awful smell, and it grounds up, no junks, so he doesn't waste any of the food. This food is made especially for urinary track infection and hairballs so it is awesome!

Hill's non-prescription Pate
27 October 2023

8 months ago my young (then overweight) male cat suffered a urinary blockage requiring emergency surgery. My vet insisted he should be fed the veterinary prescription diet pate with no added dry food. He didn't love it at first, but in time his hunger won out. I added slightly warm water to add moisture. He lost weight and gained energy. After 7 mos I've switched to the non prescription Hill's pate, plus I've added a few nuggets of the Hills dry urinary care food.He loves it and gobbles every bit of his twice-daily meals. He's gained only a few ounces over several months. I'll not allow him to get fat again. He seems much healthier and happier.

Long-haired kitty needed some help
29 July 2024

I purchased this to help my long-haired guy during this extremely hot weather. Even with regular brushing, he can get massive (read: MASSIVE) hairballs that understandably make him super grumpy and are alarming to suddenly find on the floor. I wanted to help him out a bit by getting something to help hair pass through a bit better. We have Science Diet dry food for their teeth, so I'm comfortable with the brand. All the kitties quickly adjusted to the new food and they really like it! I wasn't sure, since they usually aren't fond of pate, but this is nice and juicy and they really seem to like it. And no more hairballs so far!

Major Price Increase & Quality Decrease
14 October 2023

I used to get this wet food because my old cat had urinary issues. Because we no longer have our baby, we stopped getting it but forgot it was on auto ship so I got an extra case, so I use it as a treat for my other cats until recently. My cat had to get teeth pulled and she tends to have a lot of hairballs so I thought this was the perfect food to feed her during this time. However, I came on to buy some just to look at the outstandingly high price and reviews complaining about it making their cats sick and it being runny and low quality. I remembered getting a couple cases like people described in the past, where it was really runny and even my cats weren’t excited to eat it and they’re excited to eat pretty much everything. It also made my elderly cat with urinary issues throw up quite often. The major price increase led me to finally review. I’ve gotten this food since 2020 and it’s increased 26.77 since then. The last case I got was a year and a half ago, and in that time it’s increased 17.11. I understand inflation, however, if the price is high I expect a food that doesn’t reduce in quality as the price increases. I will be doing my research tonight on better brands.

Quality Degrading
24 September 2024

Science Diet Urinary Hairball Control Can Cat Food quality has been degrading in quality. The smell isn't appetizing, and now has a very grainy texture! I've taken pictures of big pieces of what looks like skin, or possibly tripe in every can I've opened for the past several months from different cases of food that I've ordered. My cats sniff it and at times will try to eat it, but then walk away leaving a full plate. I've been feeding my cats Science Diet Urinary Hairball Control for many years and they all loved it, but now the quality has significantly degraded to the point I'm throwing most of it away! This food isn't cheap either, so very disappointed in Science Diet brand oveall... SMH

Science Diet Urinary NON-Prescription Canned Cat Food Tastes Good
6 November 2023

My 9 year old male ginger tabby recently has had urinary issues, specifically calcium oxalate stones and lots of inflammation. I bought this Science Diet urinary canned cat food as a back up for the Hill's c/d Multicare canned cat food and so far no urinary issues have returned. I'm a little confused at the difference in the NON-prescription and prescription foods (Science Diet v Hill's c/d). I've looked at the ingredients, they are very similar but a few slight differences. I feel it's necessary to feed the urinary food given the issues my cat has had. The wet food gets lots of extra water added to make a juicy slush and my cat loves it.
