5” versions do a lot more than I expected.

I started to notice that I was borrowing his pair more and more often which led me to realize a small pair for pocket carry was almost necessity. I was skeptical because they really are tiny. I was almost disappointed because I didn’t believe they would fill the same role as the 6” versions. I was delightfully mistaken. The 5” pliers still open wide enough to fit any 1/2” and 3/4” fittings that don’t need a large amount of force to tighten or loosen. Am I running gas pipe with these pliers?..... no, but they are useful for so many tasks. I’m now absolutely in love with my new pliers and would be devastated if they were lost. I’ve attached a picture of the pliers when I first got them to give an idea of their size, and also a picture of other tools that stay in my pockets to compliment these pliers. I find by carrying these items, I spend a lot less time going back to my tool bag or service truck to get what I need. I’ll 100% buy another pair of these pliers when I loose them.

Daily carry for hydraulic mechanic

I do a lot of field work as a mechanic on big nasty industrial contrivances, specializing in hydraulics. I keep the 7 1/2" and the 10" in my toolbag at all times, with the 7 1/2" (and sometimes both) usually staying in my pocket when I'm on a job. Contrary to my expectation, I tend to get the most use out of my 7 1/2" size. There is a learning curve to these pliers that some folks can't seem to get past, and they don't give you very much leverage relative to the jaw capacity (though you can effectively hammer or use a "cheater pipe" on the upper handle, usually at the expense of the superb grip material). I primarily work on big-ass stuff and use mostly big-ass pipe and crescent wrenches. The versatility of the cobra pliers in my pocket spares me endless trips back to the toolbag when I encounter the odd small-ass bolt or fitting. And there's no other tool with comparable jaw capacity for it's size, which can be extremely useful when working on super cramped equipment. Personally, they're one of my favorite tools in my bag, though I can imagine they're not necessarily a good value for everyone. They're not really an all-out replacement for bigger longer wrenches but rather a damn useful and convenient alternative option. And they haven't replaced my need for standard flat jaw channel-locks for a lot of tasks. Likely downside is that everyone you work with will give you grief for using (what appears to be) a pair of channel-locks to turn hex bolts and fittings, and/or begin to resent you for being obsessed with a stupid pair of German pliers.

Knipex 6-inch Cobra - Simply the Best Offset Jaw Pliers
20 September 2019

This review is for the Knipex 6-inch Cobra Pliers. The Knipex offset-jaw design is unique in that it is a balanced symmetrical design. The upper jaw actually is centered in a slot in the lower jaw handle. This insures that no matter how much force is applied, the jaw faces always stay parallel. This is NOT the case in most other offset-jaw pliers such as the popular Ch*****Lo*** design. The "6-inch" Knipex plies actually measure 150 mm (5.9 inches) long. The jaw width is 6.6 mm (0.260 in.). Jaw opening is adjustible in 11 steps between 0 to a maximum (parallel opening) of 30 mm (1.18 in.). The pliers are made of forged steel and the word "VANDIN" is molded into one of the handles. Jaw opening is adjustible in 11 steps between 0 to a maximum (parallel opening) of 30 mm (1.18 in.). The pliers are made of forged steel and the word "VANDIN" is molded into one of the handles. Presumably that means they are made of Chrome-Vanadium steel alloy (CR-V) which is born out by the extremely hard surface and wear-resistant jaws. These small pliers only weigh 148 grams (5.2 oz.) so are easy to carry in a pocket. They have a leverage factor of 4.8 to the center-line of the jaws, so a clamping force on the handles of 50 lbs, will provide a clamping force on a nut of 240 lbs. They are very solid and do not bend or become springy even under very heavy force. The construction of these pliers obviously makes use of a very advanced manufacturing technology. As noted, the upper jaw handle is surrounded by the lower jaw handle on BOTH sides. The slot in the lower jaw is 4 mm wide, BUT the upper jaw end is 6.6 mm wide and the handle end is 9mm wide. It's seemingly impossible to construct this assembly from finished parts. Clearly Knipex must somehow forge and finish the pieces AFTER they are assembled. This difficult and probably expensive process pays off by making these pliers much stronger than other designs and keeps the jaw surfaces aligned perfectly no matter how much clamping force is applied. It's a remarkable, clever and unique design.I use these to tighten and loosen hard to reach knurled chrome-plated jam nuts which are too thin and too close together to grip with conventional pliers. These work perfectly,These are not inexpensive, but like most high-quality tools are a lifetime investment. They are made so well they probably will actually last several lifetimes, so in the end are a true bargain. Although these are hard-working tools, they are so well designed and constructed they border on being functional Art.

One of the best pliers you will ever own
5 September 2019

Best pliers I have ever purchased I should’ve own This from many years ago. I almost bought one of the knock off copy. I am so glad I did not. This pliers is absolutely incredible, The length size and grip is perfect. The first time I used it I had a bicycle seat that was Seize up and would not slide to adjust. I tried to break it loose with WD-40, hammer, regular Channellock pliers and a vice grip it would only slipped around the metal no matter how tight I clamp it. Then I remember I bought This Knipex cobra pliers, On the very first try I adjusted it to the proper size and clamp into the seat bar. I step on it and the seat start to spin free. The Teeth are strong and durable after that first use I thought some of the teeth would be worn down. Nope they are in great condition with Oddly any sign of use. What else can I say this pliers is the best just buy it you will not regret it. All the good review or correct. all the bad review or people who probably are not handy and don’t know how to use the pliers. They were being cheap and bought the wrong size for the job they wanted to do. by spending the money and buying the right size or set. you will not regret it. see pictures for a little comparison with a regular Channellock pliers. I bought the KNIPEX 87 01 300, 12-Inch Cobra Pliers I will definitely be buying more KNIPEX Pliers in the near future.

Seemed absolutely fine *for what it is*. Many seem to miss that, however. To clarify, this is a 5" set of cobras. Some vid on youtube likes the teeth on the 6" model better, never compared both in person. Either of those seems fine for EDC, a smidge more leverage on 6"/better teeth supposedly, but I went with this one. I figured the hardest-to-reach-places would favor the smallest of tools. 10" Cobras will grip better, have lots more leverage, etc, this is the pocket version, easy to carry, great personal pliers, fits most anywhere, etc. -- *But never forget* -- 125 mm, about 5", this thing is *tiny*. The hype is real.
6 December 2019

These things are absolutely fantastic. I love my old channellocks, but I decided to give these a try. They have exceeded my expectations. The functionality, durability and build quality of these pliers is top notch in every way. Once you build muscle memory with these beasts, its almost impossible to go back to the traditional channellocks. This is just a superior product in every way. I have abused the hell out of these, even using them as a jab-saw hammer, etc... and they are still as smooth as brand new. The teeth are still looking great, the "spring" lever hasn't missed a beat, the function hasn't gotten sticky, the grips are still intact. I will never buy anything else, in fact I will now buy every size that they make in these, just to have the ultimate set of ... MoreThese things are absolutely fantastic. These get an A++ in every category from me. I can't imagine that there is a better water pump plier on the planet. Excellent.

Underwhelmed. Quality overhype.

I purchased these with a set of Knipex parallel jaw pliers because I have heard nothing but good things about this brand. I have countless Channellock pliers in various shapes and sizes. I have never been unhappy, but since I needed a small pair for a compact tool kit I figured I would give Knipex a try. There is no question that the locking design is great, but the fit and finish on the copy I got left me wanting my money back. I have bought tools from Harbor Freight that looked better. They are supposed to be forged, but they look cast. Yes, I'm being hard on these, but they are stupid expensive and people RAVE about this brand. For this price and this much hype they should look and feel like quality and they certainly do not. If it wasn't such a pain to return ... MoreI purchased these with a set of Knipex parallel jaw pliers because I have heard nothing but good things about this brand. Knipex, in my opinion, are a bit overhyped.

best pliers on the market

These are the absolute best Tongue and Groove Pliers money can buy. Unlike more traditional "Channellock" style pliers these have much more adjustment settings, allowing you to get a much better grip on them, as the handles can close all the way . The teeth are also the best I've ever used. You could hang on these and they absolutely do not slip. I rarely ever find myself using pipe wrenches after buying these just because there that good. Price is a little steep but they are totally worth it. #sweepstakes
