If you are a believer in cast iron, then you definitely need a dutch oven in your cooking kit. Properly seasoned, this one is perfect for oven, grill, or campfire cooking. I tend to think that the enamel ones are unnecessary, and those make you miss out on the authentic cast iron experience. This size is good if you are cooking for 2-4 people. Easy to use, versatile, and heavy duty - it's all you need in a Dutch oven. Be sure to establish and keep the seasoning, and this can even become a family heirloom!

I went camping this last week to enjoy the Meteor shower away from the city lights and I needed up with 8 teenage kids (3 boys & 5 girls) Two of the girls are mine, the rest were their best friends, 1 boy was my son, and 1 was oldest daughter's boyfriend and the other was one daughter's friends little brother, whom is still a teenage, at 14 years old.I asked my oldest, and her boyfriend if they could stop by our local Wal-mart before heading out into Croatan National Forest primitative camping/trail area we always have camped and hiked at for the past 6 years, so they could pick up us up another, larger cast iron Dutch oven by Lodge. They did, and more food items I needed to cook for the extra added little brother, When they arrived. I asked my daughter, whom was laying down in the dark tent to open the box, and keep the cast iron Dutch oven in the tent with her so it would remain clean until I needed it after wood and coals got hol enough. Then I asked my son to bring me the cardboard box it came in to prevent me from wasting a fire starter or other means of starting fire in middle of no where and we got it going and it died down leaving red, blazing coals and wood.I then asked for the Dutch oven to be brought out to me and upon my daughter, whom Dutch oven weighs almost as much as she does, not really, but like me they are on the tinier side, skinner side and she barely weighs 112 lbs if wet! LOLAnyway, so without even thinking twice about it, or to actually using lantern to check the Lodge Cast iron Dutch oven prior to use, I reached over and grabbed the distilled water bottle so I could give it at least a once quick over before cooking our food in it and it seems to shoot out the side.I had my son turn on the Lantarn and bring above me and Low and behold I was NOT crazy, as the kids were telling me after I made comment that it must have hole in it to shoot out cooking oil onto my knee like it did.Once light was on, It was so open and clear to see going right down the edge of pot, both outside and inside cracked in almost precise locations.Gotta now find locate receipt my daughter and boyfriend used to purchase it, and PRAY they will refund it without the original box and if at all possible, refund my money so I can purchase another exact model at Walmart across town (as our wal-mart is sold out and has been for last week it seems.Anyway, I absolutely adore, love and think food tastes so much better when cooked in cast iron, on oven, in oven or over campfire. It is just authentic homemade filled with deliciousness no matter if it is simple eggs with cheese for breakfast or taco meat for Taco Bags like we were supposed to quit sitting over campfire because the humidity this past week was insane and THAT, camping in Mid August humid/heat in North Carolina -- DO NOT DO IT unless you absolutely HAVE to! It is a sweat filled, body odor infested, and well basically is just gross to even think about must actually smell it! Trust me.

Great Dutch (Camping) Oven. We used it for our scouting campout. We actually bought two, one for dessert and one for meal. The scouts had never cooked with a Dutch oven so it was a great learning experience for them. We can’t wait to go on more campouts and more Dutch oven cooking. It holds the perfect amount of food for 8+ people. We used liners to help with clean up.

I own several Lodge cast iron skillets of varying sizes that I cook with almost daily at home.l I LOVE my Lodge dutch oven without legs for cooking in the oven and often cook pot roasts in it low and slow heat. Perfect every time! So I thought that I'd try cooking outdoors with the briquettes with the Lodge Camp Dutch Oven with legs. It comes with an instruction booklet that I highly recommend you read through before using the oven. There's a handy chart in there that tells you precisely how many briquettes you need for your size oven to get a certain temp. My first meal using this camp oven was pork chops and potatoes with mushroom sauce. Easy and delicious! Lodge cookware is made in the USA, durable and practical. I highly recommend!
LOVE IT!E-Z Clean-up thanks to the preseasoning right out of the box.I use it in my Big Green Egg all the time. Keep the lid slightly cracked to let in some more of the smoky goodness. I've done short ribs, meat loaf, chicken, pork chops, pot roasts and more. Never needs to re-seasoned as long as you follow clean up directions. This is the best accessory any grillmaster can ever get.
This is my second 6 Qt Lodge Dutch Oven. I knew what to expect. I purchased it because the first one was seriously rusted on the inside. OK slap me, it didn't get cleaned out before it was put away. I _needed_ the dutch oven and couldn't recondition the old in time, so I purchased another. When I got to reconditioning the old one, it was salvageable. I washed it out and wire wheeled the inside to cleanout the rust. Then because there were some pits -- oh the shame -- I used a flap disc and ground the inside. Now the inside is smooth like a Wagner or Griswold dutch oven. After reseasoned it using flax seed I tested the new coating by making an apple pie. The apple pie was great, and so is my reconditioned dutch oven. What other piece of kitchenware can you ... MoreThis is my second 6 Qt Lodge Dutch Oven. I knew what to expect. Never will I ever use any other cast iron brand that isn't lodge. Lodge is made in the USA and does not have any pitting or imperfections. It's my go to for camping and cooking indoors. This I bought thinking it was a regular dutch oven WITHOUT the feet for a campfire and then I get it home from curbside pickup and to my surprise this has feet! The online picture is very vague and there was only the one picture showing it and it appears to be flat bottomed. But that's no problem, I will still keep it! It's a great oven.
The most terrible experiences. Ordered one, and it was rusted and had a hole. Replacement was given, and had the same problem. Do they not have any new products? The 2nd replacement was also rusted, but at least didn't have a hole. That's the best Lodge can produce here.
This is the Dutch oven size that is called for in almost all the recipes for outdoor cooking. I love mine and I have a deeper 12 inch as well. This six quart is the identical size as is also found with the Boy Scout insignia engraved on the lid. I think it is the perfect size for most anything I cook. There are times when something taller is needed for a tall roast or a ham but I have that covered with larger (and heavier) Dutch ovens. I'd say that most of the time, this is my go-to Dutch oven for both inside and outside cooking. It works just great both on top of and in the oven of my gas range. It holds a generous amount of food and is not as much of an exercise in weight lifting as some of the higher capacity Dutch ovens. Lodge quality is always tops. On website 12 inch is shown and represented as a 6 quart. This is very confusing and, frankly, wrong. I ordered a Cabbalas 6 quart following the information in the question and answer section and was sent a 10 inch. In the order option for the Cabbalas dutch ovens there are options for 6 quart and 10 quart (represented as a 16 inch) but nothing in between. Very confusing.
