After struggling to get a decent finish on new pine stair treads with my cheap black and decker random orbital sander, I decided to give this finish sander a try. I purchased this one based on other reviews and I am happy to say that this sander does not disappoint. While it does technically have an orbital motion, the pad itself does not spin so there you're less likely to wind up with swirl marks if you're careful and go back and forth with the grain. This square pad sander was better for my project because the treads are already installed with skirt boards, so the round pad type sanders can't get into the corners. As with the reviewer's review that convinced me to buy this sander, it is to replace a 45 year old Black and Decker zero option sander that has been a workhorse for me, to sand a softwood (redwood) deck with 2 x 6 boards for re-staining. The last time I rented one of the big, square, walk-behind sanders, but it was too hard to control the amount of wood removed, so I decided to do it "by hand". I wanted at least the same quality for longevity, and I think this will deliver. Very smooth operation compared to the old B&D; sandpaper replacement and hole punching is easy; sandpaper lasts much longer with the vent holes. As orbital sanders go, and I've used many, this tool is outstanding. The clamps work properly, no paper slippage. The dust extraction is really good, especially if connected to an external dust extractor. The overall feel and balance is pretty stable and is only surpassed by pneumatic sanders at a much higher cost. this sander is definitely the best Buzzz for Buck by far.

Comfortable & Clean
18 June 2024

Bought because of the overwhelming amount of good reviews, claim of less vibration and because it's Makita. Barely feel any vibration when sanding with it and it's very comfortable. The extended handle allows you to hold it further back and it's very ergonomic. I had a slightly more powerful palm sheet sander but I've found the time it takes to sand almost the same. Reliable brand, comfortable and ergonomic.

Definitely a five star product. Purchased to remove patches of failed paint from my deck. Ate right through the flaking paint and went down to clean wood with little effort. That being said, I did not have to strip the entire deck, only patches. I would expect a bigger model would be more appropriate for a major job, but for a finishing sander this is top notch. Unlike a couple other reviewers, I had no issues at all with paper slipping and actually the paper didn't even wear as much as I expected with this chore. The product didn't even tire out my hands and I am small and not super strong. Great product and tremendous value for the money. Hassles with clipping in sandpaper
21 January 2023

Here’s why you don’t want to buy this machine. most machines are engineered so that a quarter sheet of sandpaper is easily inserted into the Sanders clips. My style is to insert one and fully into the cavity and then clip it. However this machine if you do that the other clip will not reach the rest of the sandpaper. Takes too much time to fiddle with the sandpaper getting it perfectly aligned before you can clip them. Mine is going back to the store. Review helpful? Give it a thumbs up.

I like that the dust bag actually works. Poke holes in the sand paper per the instructions and there really is much less dust, particles coming off of the sander as you work. This product was recommended to me by the Home Depot team in the store. I explained the need I have and they said this is the right tool. I get why they would say that. However, it's not been a great way to complete the job I'm working on. It's taking a lot longer and much more effort to smooth the surface I'm working on. I'm smoothing the ceiling of a bathroom that previously had wood strips (like a sauna) glued to it. The glue is dry and brittle but the sander just can't smooth it down, remove enough of it, to make the ceiling clean and smooth for painting. I think a sander with more movement on the pad, more speed or power, and lower grit paper would be more effective. For a lot of purely mild surface smoothing on wood or drywall it's likely fine. It's a good tool overall. For my application it is making the job pretty hard and taking a long time even with the lowest grit sandpaper. Maybe an orbital would have been better but I went with the recommendation in store.

Pretty darn good sander. Practically no vibration transmitted to your hand, and that's a GOOD thing. Very effective orbital motion and you cannot see any swirl marks from the movement. About the best paper holder that I've experienced - haven't had a sheet let go. Noise is not an issue - but I'm getting older and no telling if my hearing is any good anyway. The hardest thing to do is cut the sandpaper into one-third sheets! I didn't use the dust bag so I can't comment on that but I wish I did. Had to do a serious dust cleanup after. I was sanding a good sized porch ceiling so I bought this specifically for that job. Was working with the sander over my head the whole time and it was not too heavy to do that. A belt sander would have been impossible. Like any sander of this nature, you could damage the rubber pad by burning through the paper and eroding the rubber pad. That's just the way these are so pay attention during the sanding process. For the money, you can't beat this sander unless you specifically need in-line sanding. Then get out your wallet and forget working above your head..

This is a powerful little sander. I was going to buy the half-sheet sander, but it seemed too expensive. And I was reluctant to buy this smaller sander because I had some heavy-duty sanding to do, better suited to a belt sander. However, I read a review where the guy claimed to use this little sander on his deck planks! So I figured what the heck, it should work on a couple hardwood counters and a table.Well, it did a great job. With quality sandpaper, it will cut right through the work very quickly. Of note is the super quiet motor, low vibration, and excellent dust pick up. Changing sandpaper sheets is a snap, unlike my Makita quarter-sheet sander, which actually takes something slightly larger than a quarter sheet, thus creating a huge waste of sandpaper.

Very useful to have the bag attachment, it saves a lot of mess. Pretty easy to use hand held sander, but was glad to have gotten a plank of wood to practice on before tackling the real project as i'm not used to sanding or this machine in particular. Doesn't jump around on you easily and it moves smoothly, good for smaller projects. If used for an extended period I recommend thicker gloves while you're using it - I used this sander for several hours a day over several days, and experienced discomfort in my hand and arm from the vibrations, but that's pretty normal without something to absorb some of the shock. Overall very handy, and you just need to buy a quarter sheet of the sandpaper grit you need (from any brand, it genuinely doesn't have to be Makita paper), or ... MoreVery useful to have the bag attachment, it saves a lot of mess.
