I purchased this device to replace my existing Cox panoramic Wi-Fi router, which suffered from dismal performance issues that can never be fixed by tech support. Once I completed the setup wizard I was able to start gaming online, the difference performance was like night and day (no pun intended). If you're looking for a large bump in performance over the ISP provided equipment, I highly recommend getting this or any of the nighthawk line of routers. It's worth the money and you will not be disappointed.

I wanted to upgrade from my 2011 Asus RT-N66R Gigabit Router Dual-band Wireless-N900. I was excited about some of the features of the Nighthawk AX4 4-Stream WIFI 6 Router – AX3000 (RAX38). I looked forward to the ultra-fast WIFI speeds up to 3Gbps. I looked forward to the WIFI 6 powerful dual-core processor. This router came well packaged with easy to read and understand instructions. I did numerous speed test using Ookla and Fast.com. The speed test ping high for uploads and downloads. However, when I went to YouTube to play a 3-minute music video by my favorite country band; the music video never played very SLOWLY if at all. The video played for one second then it would stall, then it would play for another second and it would stall again. The results of the speed test looked promising but was misleading against actual usage. I disconnected the Nighthawk AX4 4-Stream WIFI 6 Router – AX3000 (RAX38). I reconnected my 2011 Asus RT-N66R Gigabit Router Dual-band Wireless-N900. I went back onto Youtube and played the same exact 3-minute music video by my favorite country band; the video played all the way through without stalling.Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the Nighthawk AX4 4-Stream WIFI 6 Router – AX3000 (RAX38) since it is too slow for my personal and work needs. This is the best router we’ve ever owned, it’s lightning fast, keeps the Internet speeds consistent, has a whole range of functions and options that most of the other high-end routers do not offer. I am a truck driver, and I am gone a lot. The router does security scans on all of the devices in my network, I get those updates real time to my phone no matter where I’m at in the country. I’m glad we got it. My network is more secure, and I get a notification of any new device that connects to it. So I have security, speed, and real network monitoring are important to you for your home network, then definitely get one of these. It’s sports up to 20 devices streaming simultaneously, with no lag that we’ve experienced before with other routers. We are going to buy ... I bought this lovely nightlight from Amazon nearly a year ago and realized months later it was also a great paperweight! From day 1 I had concerns, but price and new AX capabilities had me ensnared. On day one I tinkered for hours, thinking my network engineering degree and decade of experience had failed me. I finally got it to a stable working environment. Then I moved to a new home, and this is where the devices true capabilities really accelerated.I've moved it to at least 3 different places in the homes because I thought the signal strength was bouncing in a weird way. I installed a new shielded twisted pair Cat5e cable to my ISP's modem, then configured connecting devices from scratch and reset the router to factory maybe a dozen times. The AP intermittently drops signal or access to the ISP's modem, 5G is literally unusable, AX mode doesn't function as intended (broadcasts but doesn't authenticate) on either spectrum, standard configuration options are severely lacking even in "Advanced" mode, the mobile app is a joke as it provides no real configuration options, and throughput negotiates at one speed but transfers out at another. I literally can only use it on 2.4 for all devices. At this point, hiring a squirrel to sit on my roof with a tinfoil pole is probably more consistent than using this well-lit plastic rock. While most people are talking about how the detriments of COVID-19 was for years to come, I'll be talking about my experience with the AX4.
Most negative experience ever. Purchased refurbished item on Amazon. After setup, the router would not connect to internet. Reset to factory 2 times with same result. Returned for a replacement item. This time internet was available on wired connection. Returned for refund. Bought a Linksys at Walmart and it is working great.
Used the same Netgear router for 12-13 years without any problems until our service provider switched to internet tv. I bought the Nighthawk in 2022 to stream internet tv but also because my daughter said the previous version I had been using wasn't secure enough. She's a tech person so I trusted her judgement but also trusted Netgear to give me a long-lasting product. The only reason I went with 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wasn't able to get a hold of a technician after the 90 days had past without buying an extended support package. All I needed to know was the wi-fi pass code which wasn't the same as the password on the bottom of the router. The actual router itself works fine and my internet guy who hooked it up when he hooked up the internet tv seemed to ... Up until this RAX40 I've been a faithful Netgear guy for the last 12 years. Every new router I get from them just seems to get a bit slower on reboot and the RAX40 is no exception. If I had to reboot this router once every month it wouldn't be so bad but this router is so bad about disconnecting that it has to be done daily if not every few hours. From unplugging it until you have a usable signal is roughly 5 minutes. I've read all the Netgear forums, checked off all the problematic areas, shutdown every function that made this a $160 router and to no avail still goes down daily.2 week ago 8/17/20 I rolled my firmware back from 1.0.3.80 to 1.0.3.64, still crashes daily. Crashed once last night and today I've rebooted it twice already.I'm done Netgear, I've already ordered a replacement from your competitor. You guys have lost your touch. If my laptop can reboot in under 30 seconds why does this router take 5 minutes? Then to top that off why does this router have so many problems. There is so many people who are having troubles with your products as of late. You guys really have left the realm of quality over quantity. I'd hate to see what a $400 router of yours looks like let alone this piece of junk.Good bye.
Bought this junk box for gaming. It connects then continually loses signal over n over again. I switch to the "smart connect" and it made it even worse on all my devices. Please don't advertise that it's better gaming experience with "smart connect" because it's really "stupid connect" as everything just keeps connecting then disconnecting. I upgraded from the R6250 to this AX3000. My R6250 ran better than this hunk of junk. The R6250 was running great till it started powering off by itself all the time. Think I'm done with Netgear products after this one.
I'll start off by saying I had some initial frustrations that made getting internet from my modem extremely difficult. It tooks about 3-4 resets before I finally got it right. After getting it setup, it's incredible. Wifi 6 is super quick and responsive, the Nighthawk app makes it simple to see what devices are on your network, change your passwords, and overall manage your Wifi connection without needing to login into the router via the browser. I have a speed of 300 with Spectrum and my devices can actually hit that with this router versus getting it slowed down once it's used by my devices. Overall, I'd still recommend the router for anyone who is looking for a great router with superb performance
Currently running on RAX40 Firmware Version 1.0.3.94; the latest released version of firmware as of this review.First, the good:1. Aesthetically, this router is one of the best. It looks good flat or mounted on a wall or ceiling.2. The router has an LED off switch, which is worth its weight in gold.3. The router has decent performance and a lot of good settings. The bad:This router has HORRIBLE firmware issues. On old firmware: You have to set it up via the app because the router constantly believes it has no internet via the default IP address...while providing internet to your desktop via the cable. On new firmware: Pretty much every time this router updates its firmware, it bricks itself and you have to reset it back to the original firmware (which is ... On old firmware: You have to set it up via the app because the router constantly believes it has no internet via the default IP address...while providing internet to your desktop via the cable. On new firmware: Pretty much every time this router updates its firmware, it bricks itself and you have to reset it back to the original firmware (which is bad) then update it a second time. I'd say there's about a 30% chance of firmware upgrade success, or being forced to force reset it again since it'll be stuck in blinking LED of death mode otherwise.EVERY firmware update that fails takes about 4 hours of reset/reconfigure/reset/update/reconfigure to make work.Latest firmware in particular issues: On RAX40 Firmware Version 1.0.3.94, a self-signed certificate was added for 192.168.1.1; this didn't make the release notes (WHY) and screws with your setup if the upgrade wasn't successful. It took 4 hard resets for me to finally get the update to work correctly, where before it was stuck putting garbage in the IP address field, caused by the router itself getting confused by its own ssl encryption (fantastic engineering /s).DHCP service from the router frequently fails (2-3 times a year minimum). When this occurs, you'd think a reboot would resolve it, right? RIGHT? WRONG. When DHCP fails in the firmware (which you can verify by setting a static IP address on your desktop and realizing your internet service still works just fine)...YOU HAVE TO RESET THE FIRMWARE AGAIN AND UPGRADE IT BACK TO THE LATEST...WHICH IS STILL UNRELIABLE AND FAILS TO UPGRADE HALF THE TIME.My last Netgear router lasted for nearly a decade with minimal issues - maybe a reboot once every eon or so. This one is quickly headed to the dump.AVOID AT ALL COSTS UNLESS NETGEAR FIXES ITS FIRMWARE AND MAKES IT RELIABLE. YOU WILL SPEND MORE TIME FIDDLING WITH THIS ROUTER THAN ANY OTHER YOU HAVE EVER OWNED.
