Remember when you first bought the new tech jacket and the rain just pearled off the sleeves…and you thought, “this is the BEST jacket ever!” Then next Fall comes along and the jacket comes out of the closet and on the first rainy walk, the rain soaks in a bit. What the??? Then I found out that the jacket needs a re-vitalizing every so often. Yes, it’s a bit pricey but I can do a couple jackets with half the bottle. And then when I’m outside on a rainy day, I’m glad that the jackets do what they’re supposed to.

We just got finished treating all of our rain gear with Nikwax. First we washed all of the garments in the wash with Tech Wash. Next, we ran a cycle in the wash with the TX.Direct. We then dried all the garments in the dryer. Today, I walked to the bus stop in the rain and my rain jacket was like brand new. The water was immediately beading on the surface, compared to last week when it was soaking the surface with each rain drop. Just follow the directions and you'll see why people like this stuff in rainy areas.

I bought the two products you advise to take care of a waterproof jacket (Reversible raincoat - Sunglow) recently because, given the way that the world is going these days, when I actually need to use these products, 'supply chain issues' will probably mean that they are no longer available'.So, can't review the products but expect them to do what they say on the pack. As I now cannot get out of this rigmarole I will have to put something against the Size - Quality - Would Recommend boxes that is meant to indicate 'don't know yet - time will tell' but that option is not available. I followed the instructions to the letter, hoping to revitalize my 2 rain jackets that were still in great condition but failing me in the rain. There was a warning on the container that some of the seam tape may come loose in places and can be just glued back on with clear glue. Not only did some of it come loose, much of it did, and the pockets on one of the jackets came loose at the bottom! Also, on this jacket, some of the laminated, irreparabale, lining was damaged. This is not an old jacket and has been gently worn (I'm a 72 year old female hiker, not a 20 something adventurer). The jacket is now ruined for rain - may serve as a windbreaker.Very disappointed with this product for which I had high hopes. I wish they indicated that literally… anywhere since they show that in their video instructions (doesn’t specify on the cap nor on the text instructions on the bottle…).To be more environmentally friendly, use less Nikwax and not have to clean out my washer after applying, I hand washed in my bath tub. Not ideal, less soaking effect than a bucket - which would have been better but it worked nonetheless. When in reality the waterproof layer is on the inside of the jacket and the wetting out they are seeing is the outer layer fabric designed for abrasion resistance soaking up water after the DWR coating wares down. The breathable membrane also becomes clogged preventing the moisture from escaping. Meaning they see the outer layer soaking up water and they feel their sweat, leading them to think the garment is no longer waterproof. We did follow Nikwax's directions and ran a full wash cycle first with Nikwax Tech Wash to "prep" the surface of the garment before adding in waterproofing. I got totally soaked, albeit in heavy rain, over 100 metres. That was the distance to the shop to which I reported the problem, to be met with a couldn’t care less rather rude response. Back home I emailed customer care about the problem. The email wasn’t even acknowledged, never mind replied to. This was about a year ago and, finding you’ve still got this product on sale, I thought I’d try again. I can only surmise that most of the good reviews had tested their coats in rain. I used this product after washing two shells with Tech Wash. The shells were air dried in the basement. The first wet day on the slopes revealed a couple of wet spots where the shell failed to stop water from soaking through. The shell is an old beater. I'm convinced the product works, but I'll try again to see if I can waterproof the spots that allowed water to seep through. Next time I'll just do one shell at a time to hopefully get full coverage.

Nikwax hasn't provided a response, although TNF warrantied one jacket when I thought it was a one off issue with TNF jacket, but given the issue persisted with three other jackets, I'm narrowing it to Nikwax as the culprit. Don't know if this is an odd chemical reaction or what to the inner layer, but given that Gore-Tex Paclite Plus is 2.5L and Dry.Q is 2.5L and didn't suffer from spotting, while Gore-Tex Infinium is 2L and FUTURELIGHT is 3L which did suffer from spotting, I don't see anything consistent about the issue. If it was a washing and drying technique issue (after over 30 years of use with no issues I can't see that as culprit), then it should have affected the two rain pants, too.
