OXO Good Grips - Etched Ginger & Garlic Grater

This multi-purpose grater is a great addition to our kitchen and has been infinitely better for grating ginger, cheese and garlic than a regular micro-plane which is often times way too narrow. The grating results in a very fine powder-like substance which is perfect for any dish and recipe. The sheath that comes with it to protect the blade fits all nice and snug and it's a breeze to clean. Best of all, unlike other micro-planes there's no grooves so nothing gets lost or stuck. Very well designed.

First, the positive - I loved the easy-open packaging. I wish all blister packs would open with such ease. The grater is easy to handle and sits nicely in the hand. It's very sturdy and well constructed. It also does exactly what it is supposed to do - grate. However, the cover only fits on the grater on the business side - it could have been improved by having it fit on both sides to catch stuff that falls. The cover swipes the grated material nicely off the metal, but my finger actually does it more completely. If this had been part of the mini grater kit, it would have been a winner. Because of the angled handle, it takes up a lot of room in the drawer that would be better used by a longer and thinner grater.

It has a hole in it to hang it on a utility peg. The total grating area of the green paddle is 2 x 4.25 inches. It has a true grating surface of about 1 inch x 2.75 inches. The plastic green border extends out on the underside of the grater by about 1/2 inch. There is a clear plastic protective cover that clicks and fits over the grating surface. It does not slide on. I thought that it would be useful if the grating cover would also fit on the bottom of the grater when it is being used, to catch the grated product. It does not do this. So, the grater should be used over a cutting board, plate, or directly over a pot or pan. The grating tines are sharp and made it easy to grate frozen ginger into a lovely, snowy pile. There were no fibrous strands of ginger that usually collect on the top of other graters I've used. The grated ginger did get stuck a bit in the corners where the green plastic edge met the metal surface, on the underside of the grater. I scraped those bits out with a spoon, without much difficulty. I waited a day to let the ginger dry on the grater, just to see how easy it was to clean. I used a regular sponge, which also had a coarse side to it. The grater was easy to clean, and I didn't see any ginger stuck in the crevices where the green plastic edge met the metal on the underside of the grater. Overall, this is a good product. I would prefer a flat bottomed grater without the 1/2 inch edge on the underside, because the grated product does get stuck in the corners. The edge could have served a purpose if the cover fit on the bottom to catch the grated product. The tines are small, so I will have to use it many more times to see if they last without becoming flush with the holes and continue to stay sharp.
