Excellent optics, narrow field of view

Very well made binocular with excellent optics in terms of color, contrast and corrections for aberrations. Price is very reasonable, compared to high end binoculars that cost double the money. Handling is excellent. Main problem is the narrow depth of field of only 331 feet at 1000 yards (110 m at 1000 m). That is 10-20% less than other similar binoculars. So this is not the best binocular if you're looking for a wide field of view. But if the narrower FoV works, then you're getting $2000 quality optics at half the money. The eye relief is large enough that it should work for people who wear eye glasses, but as an eye glass wearer, it was marginal for me. As always, you have to check the binocular to see if the eye relief can work for you. This is my third pair of Pentax binocs, the other roof prism pair being a set of DCF-HS 10x36s. The out-of-plane chromatic aberrations are reasonably well controlled, about on par with the DCF set. These are very bright, on the verge of obnoxiously so during peak daylight, and once in focus, the sharpness is hard to beat. I get the sense the only imaging performance improvement you'd gain by going up in their range is better control of out-of-focus detail... I don't see any way you can appreciably improve on the sharpness of a pair of 8x binocs.Design issues are the only reasons I give these four stars. I find that it's too easy to bump this protruding lever when stowing, which either then requires an adjustment or for me to flatten the hinge and reset to about where I think I should be. These are the only specs in the Pentax range that have this lever here, so maybe this issue only bothers me. The other is the ease with which the eye cups twist in and out... they could stand to be tighter. Construction otherwise is fantastic... very solid, well-placed hand grips, and I think once the focus knob breaks in a little, that'll feel fine too.Regardless, and especially if you're looking for a pair to keep ready somewhere, this is a good buy.

Great Pentax build, reasonably and competitively priced vs. competitors.
1 May 2019

Good product and reasonably priced compared to competitors. The angle of view, 8x mag, fully multicoated (all lenses), rugged build, and overall Pentax quality is what made me go with this pair compared to others. I'm pleased with the value. For my purposes as a casual/hobbyist bird watcher, these are great. If you're looking for something more lightweight for travel, these could work, but it might be worthwhile looking for something more compact depending on what you want to carry with you during travel. For all purpose, well designed and built 8x mag roof binoculars, these have been wonderful. The only thing I don't like is the strange placement of the diopter adjustment and I'd have preferred hard stop screw out clicks for the eye pieces, but it's worth it for ... MoreGood product and reasonably priced compared to competitors. Great for Boating

The Pentax binoculars are exactly as described. They have great clarity, are easy to adjust and fine tune to my vision requirements. These waterproof binoculars have the magnification and field of view needed for my boating usage.

Great for birding

I am impressed with these binoculars from Pentax. They are sharp, bright, and have excellent eye relief. The field of view is good, contrary to what another review says. I find the diopter correction in the center easier to use than the type on the right eyepiece, and I don't have a problem with it moving - it actually clicks into place and stays there.I was looking for a pair of 8x42s which were waterproof and NOT made in China. These are made in the Philippines and are the least expensive pair which meet my criteria. I do not in any way regret this choice. The only criticism I have, and it is minor, is the case, It has no straps, belt loops, etc. It is always a problem knowing whether you should have a case with a strap for a camera or binoculars with a strap, ... MoreI am impressed with these binoculars from Pentax. I plan to attach a small clip or carabiner to the case so I can clip if to my belt or pack when I take it off the binoculars. Otherwise it could get put down somewhere and lost, or stuffed in a pocket.

Great value, good for birding.
29 December 2020

I was looking for a pair of waterproof 8x40 or 8x42 binoculars and I am very happy with these Pentax binoculars. They are good quality, the image is clear, bright, minimal chromatic aberration. I think they are good value and will last for many years. Unlike another reviewer, I like the diopter adjustment in the center: it is easier to set and it stays put, unlike many binoculars with the adjustment on the right eyepiece. They are lightweight, but not flimsy. They feel as if they will last for many years. I do agree with the reviewer who commented on the case not have a strap, belt loop, or any way to secure it. The lens caps are not the best, they suffice but are a poor design, That is about the only negative I have about these binoculars. One major reason for my decision to purchase them is that they are made in the Philippines, not in China.

Great with glasses
17 June 2018

I bought these a year ago and they have been exactly what I needed. I use them for casual birding. They are easy to focus and have a good field of vision. I wear glasses and use these over my glasses with great success. They are not the smallest binoculars, so weight might be an issue. For myself, I am always bringing them when I am specifically going birding so the magnification and lens size was more important to me than compactness and weight. That said they have never felt too heavy when I carry them around. I find them very comfortable to hold.I would recommend them and am considering buying a second pair as a gift for a friend.

Pros: Very clear binoculars with great low-light performance. They feel sturdy and well made.Cons: Stiff focal wheel is ok for me but may not work for those with weaker digits. The covers pop-off a little too easily too.

Really Excellent Binoculars
22 August 2018

The value here is through the roof . Have used them for about 2 years . The optical glass quality is so high-and this is not extra low dispersion glass -its so bright and so sharp . The focus knob is very sturdy, takes a bit more turning to get the focus ,but that just allows you to get an exact sharp focus .Overall , they feel very well made. From recall ,the frame is fiberglass so its lighter which is great for multi hours of birdwatching .It has a large eye relief , which allows me ( an eyeglass wearer ) to not use the eyeglasses and just dial out the eyecups -works perfect . There is one negative and that is the cover for the objective lenses at the end of the binoculars -its useless . But there is an excellent solution - I purchased from Vortex Canada ... MoreThe value here is through the roof . Have used them for about 2 years . There is one negative and that is the cover for the objective lenses at the end of the binoculars -its useless . But there is an excellent solution - I purchased from Vortex Canada binoculars their objective lense covers -its SW-53 stamped on the inside of each cover - they fit perfectly . Now the supplied cover for the eye pieces is a one piece tray - and it works really well.I think some Nikons may also use a tray guard .It has enough friction to stay on when hanging off your neck but it comes off very quickly and easily when needed . Valuable because you can cover those eyepieces for protection when moving through bush or prevent general debris from falling into the eyepieces and yet remove them stat for a bird sighting .So with the Vortex objective lense covers plus the supplied tray eyepiece tray you now have binoculars which can be protected very well yet can be uncovered superfast .I should also say that for the strap I tie the tray guard onto it so it can just be pulled away then it dangles from the strap . I read about the vortex covers on a US seller website , as well as customer rave reviews about the glass quality ("1000 dollar glass quality" ) but bought the binoculars thru MEC . I have another pair of 8x42 binoculars which have ED glass so almost twice as costly - but I use these Pentax because they are lighter but mostly because they can be uncovered so quickly . The ED glass binoculars probably are better at low light levels , but these Pentax binoculars plus the Vortex objective lense covers provide amazing utility and glass quality at top dollar value .
