BEWARE of NEW INGREDIENTS including PORK "BY-PRODUCTS" and increased FIBER.

My beagle has reflux and this was recommended to us last year as a gentle diet. It was great until one day in March I called Chewy to report a defective case due to a dramatic change in consistency. Chewy had not been informed of any changes to the ingredients and kindly shipped a replacement case assuming a temperature change must have happened in transit. Well - the replacement case also arrived with the odd new consistency, so I went ahead and used it. Assuming Royal Canin would inform Chewy and its customers of any changes to an EXPENSIVE PRESCRIPTION DIET, I didn't connect the dots when my dog developed diarrhea that I've been battling with rice and chicken - which became very soft stool since MARCH! 2 weeks ago after starting another case of this food, my dog ... MoreMy beagle has reflux and this was recommended to us last year as a gentle diet. I FINALLY came to this review section yesterday, as well as read the reviews on Royal Canin's site to find MANY others experiencing the same thing. They replaced CHICKEN with PORK!! Among other changes. Might work for some dogs but not mine!! I'm livid they would change a prescription diet without any notice to the distributor or label alert for the customer. 2 expensive vet bills later I'm still trying to get her back to normal. WILL NOT EVER BUY AGAIN. I can't trust Royal Canin again either. They didn't even want to own up to the changes when I called them yesterday other than to admit at first to "added moisture and lowered fat". They finally admitted to the other changes when I pressed them telling them I've learned about these changes from other customer's reviews.

Been a lifetime customer. I knew immediately a few months ago there was a change in the product. Visually, texture, and smell. I called RC and like many others was shocked to find out about the recipe change with NO notice or indication on the can. They are able to do this because of loopholes in the guidelines for nutrition which is even worse for animals than it is for humans (also terrible). They didn’t change the ingredients just the ratios so they didn’t feel the need to tell people. I complained to them on the phone and I’m complaining here. Shame on you for doing this. Just because you can do something with a formula and recipe doesn’t mean you should. I am going to start a petition online if there isn’t one already to get RC to consider changing their formula back to what it was.

I just spoke with a Royal Canin rep and confirmed that both the wet and dry formulas were changed without any notification or label changes. According to her, the wet/loaf has always been pork and still is. The dry was chicken meal, but they have added pork and pea protein now. The fiber has definitely increased. She claimed that the change was minor, but as many reviews have said, this change has led to serious consequences for the already compromised dogs who rely on it. The thing that makes me the most angry is that there is ZERO accountability on RC's part for making owners aware of these changes. To me, NOT advertising the change says that the changes made were to cheapen an already incredibly expensive product. Otherwise, you would be screaming from the rooftops about how great the changes are and justifying why your prices have increased. Royal Canin has left owners with sick dogs hanging, as they are the only food (that I can find) to treat dogs with life-threatening pancreatitis. Shame on them for being so sneaky and not caring about the health of the animals THEY serve. I will NEVER support this company again for being so deceptive and irresponsible.

Extremely disappointed at changes
16 March 2024

I have been feeding my dog this food for more than 5 years due to severe skin issues, and GI issues that almost killed her several times. She was stable and liked the food. The change in the loaf food recently makes her not want to eat it. After reading the comments on the hydrolyzed loaf food, now I know why. Now, the consistency is like applesauce and she sometimes has cramps that make her cry out in pain. I will ask the vet about a different brand so she doesn't get so sick again. Owners spend thousands of dollars on their pets' health and understand how little changes get their pets out of balance very easily. It is inconcievable that a brand which professes to be so trusted can be so unwilling to address buyers' complaints. These cavalier corporate decisions are common in America but at least we can speak out, and buy elsewhere.

Good ingredients, not for every dog

While this brand is amazing for my other dog with allergy issues, it doesn't work for all dogs in all formulations. My 12-year-old beagle/terrier mix started having some issues with her food. I had her on Canidae grain free for years with no problems. About a year ago she started having looser stools, so I figured it would be a good idea to move her to a lower fat senior food, still Canidae grain free. It helped for a while, but her stool remained looser than usual, so I consulted the vet and decided on a more bland diet and tried the RC Hydrolyzed Protein food that my other dog eats - big mistake, horrible diarrhea! Next I figured I should try RC Gastro low fat in case that was the issue. It was a tossup between this and the Pro Plan EN low fat. I tried this first, unfortunately not noticing that it contained wheat which historically she is hit or miss on tolerating. This was a huge miss - she ended up with severe diarrhea again! Switched her to the Pro Plan food and problem solved. If you've got a grain free dog, this probably isn't for you, but if they do well with wheat I imagine it's great!

Terrible quality and supposedly recipe has changed

I have purchased this product for years. Over time it has become increasingly worse. As of the last two cases I purchased I noticed the smell was different. My dog also began having diarrhea and I stopped feeding her this product and switched to chicken and rice for a few weeks. As I attempted to reintroduce the dog food into her diet last week I opened a new case hoping the prior case was the problem. The first can was unevenly filled which indicates to me a manufacturer issue and a probable air pocket within the can. I gave my dog a scoop and again that evening mixed with chicken and rice. I noticed how moist it was and how oil seemed to surface where I scooped it. The next day I scooped further into the can and hit a pocket of fluid. It was oily and stinky. I immediately opened a second can and again this can was uneven at the surface. I scooped a spoonful and noticed again how moist and oily the food was compared to past cans. I scooped further and again a pocket of stinky oil was towards the bottom. I did reach out to Royal Canin and they opened a case number. The representative on the phone asked several questions and I confirmed can numbers and ingredients. She stated this is a new recipe with additional oils, etc. I found this interesting as nothing shows a new recipe on the can. And my dog started having uncontrollable diarrhea with the prior case, which the representative also verified the numbers and that was a new batch as well. I have sent them numerous pictures through an email link they supplied me. I have no idea if they plan to reach back out. I will not buy this brand again because of this. Let consumers know when a new ingredient or change has been made.

Leaving this review because the customer support specialist who assisted me over the phone in ordering this and uploading my vet prescription was so kind and helpful. This is the only food my dog can eat right now, he's finally been stable for about a year but there was a point in time where he got so sick I thought he was going to die. I used to be very pleased with this food and would have rated it 5 stars several months ago, however, the formula changed recently and now it's not so great. My dog has been on this food for over 5 years due to upset stomach and GI issues and has always done well on it, this was our and his veterinarian’s food of choice. Recently, some cases have been super soft, wet, and mushy; very different from how they were previously. While my dog still eats the food without complaint, now his stools are loose and very mushy, almost exactly the texture of the new formula. It’s almost diarrhea consistency without the actual diarrhea. Not to mention, loose stools cause gland issues, where they aren't expressed naturally while using the bathroom. It baffles me you would change a PRESCRIPTION food item without informing owners and veterinarians who rely upon this food to prevent GI upset and diarrhea.

Why reformulate a GASTROINTESTINAL formulation?
3 June 2024

My dog has been eating this food for years and doing quite well from a GI perspective. The recent case I received had a very different consistency. I thought maybe it was just the one can but after a few and a noticeable change in my dog's liking to this food, I called RC. After learning about the reformulation, I can say that I am very disappointed that a company would change a formulation of a food used by dogs with gastrointestinal issues. Just thinkg Wow, why change a GI diet formulation, and with no clear / obvious notice to consumer/pet owner..."reformulation" or "new formula". Extremely disappointed, and hoping my dog taste for this new formulation will improve and she will hopefully start eating this soon. She is not "sick'" as others have reported and hoping that does not become our situation, too.
