I sanded an old pine tabletop. Started with 60-grit and then 120-grit and this cleaned the old surface back to near new. The belt sander required a lot of power to complete the full surface and I used a 6Ah battery as well as the 2 Ah battery pack. I have done it before with a belt sander connected to mains power. I have other uses planned.

It works quite well. But the problem is it goes through a 5Ah battery in roughly 20 minutes! I don't have enough batteries for that. I have a tonne of sanding to do, but I can't get through very much of it each day. I reckon I'll be returning it in exchange for a corded one. There really should be a cordless to corded adapter!

I had been using the Ryobi orbital sander to strip old varnish and recycle and dress rough old and green wood. It worked OK, but this is much better.Once you get the technique right, how to attach the belt properly and the pressure to apply (a lot less than you might think) it strips the top layer back much quicker than an orbital, without and circle marks.I have tried a Ryobi Belt sander years ago and was disappointed. It didn't seem to have enough power to bite down and rip through the top layer of wood. This newer model is much improved in terms of power. It is almost as powerful as a corded model and the battery life is acceptable given it is a high drain device. The attachment for the dust port is a bit limiting for a right hander. It would be great if you could choose which side the dust could go (like the Ryobi rebate plane), and if there were options on what angle the elbow is at.Overall, the time you would save if you are working with very rough wood or have a lot of stripping back to do is definitely worth the purchase. I don't think this would suit more delicate work though.

This sander is great value for money and is exceptionally handy when there is no power source available for conventional tools. I was surprised by the lightweight design yet amazing durability of this sander. I can’t speak more highly of this great belt sander, thank you Ryobi for another versatile product
Just recently my corded Ryobi Belt Sander R18BS bit the dust. The sander was my favourite as nearly everything I do involves sanding prior to varnishing, oiling or painting. I was unsure which way to go but given the 6-year warranty for the battery belt sander I opted to go with it. Amazingly, the first task was to remove paint from a child's dolly cot, which the belt sander handled with aplomb. I'm now back in the land of the living and would recommend the belt sander to anyone.
Over the years I've accumulated a substantial amount of Ryobi cordless products...it's change my work flow considerably and for the better...there has only been one product that didn't seem to have the grunt of either an electrical or fuel powered model. That was the chain saw which I've only used twice...unfortunately the Ryobi belt sander falls into this category. It looks strong and imposing and realistically it does get the job done albeit slowly compared to my electrical belt sander. The latter got the job done in half the time and with less stress on the arms. But in saying that the biggest plus with all Ryobi cordless products are their convenience to run without power anytime and anywhere. But in saying that the biggest plus with all Ryobi cordless products are their convenience to run without power anytime and anywhere. So if you're near a power supply and you can be bothered walking to the ute then just plug in your powered belt sander and leave the Ryobi for the times when you're not in a place where there's no power. It gets a pass but by only just.
This sander uses way too much power for any 18V battery. It killed my 4Ah battery in 3 minutes. Tried 2 other battery, smaller, gone in 30 seconds. The charger indicated all 3 batteries are dead. Fortunately after cooling down the charger accepted the batteries again. Thanks to Bunning's excellent customer services I was able to swap it for an 800W corded unit, which goes just fine.
It's very convenient to be able to just pick up the sander and start sanding, without having a power cord. It does go through the battery pretty quickly, so best for smaller belt sanding jobs. I only gave 4 stars because on occasions, the motor doesn't get started and you have to try multiple times - presumably because the belt is fairly rigid.
I got this to sand 3 X 5 metre long peices of Red Mahogony, well what a waste of money a 5ah battery lasted less than 5 mins and I have 6 batteries used them all before 1 could recharge. This tool is by far the worst 18+ I have bought and has turned me off the rest of the range I already own 15 18+ tools but probably no more. Had to go and buy a powered sander to do the job, not a bad lurk from Ryobi put a tool out there that is not suitable for purpose and the customer will come back and buy a suitable tool. I feel very ripped off by this. I only gave a 1 rating because you have to, it's really a minus 10.
Works very well, lasts around 30-40 mins continuous runtime on a 5Ah battery with moderate to heavy sanding. Belt tracking would be better with a perpendicular screw adjustment as the current belt tracking is quite fiddly, though it does work, provided you have the belt slightly off the sander, sticking around 5mm out of alignment to the outside it is good, as one does not want to risk going the other way & damaging the sander, which is entirely possible, even for a brief moment it does a fair bit of damage. If there was a limit of adjustment, with a perpendicular screw, & maybe a lateral screw to lock the position, that would be very good & prevent accidental damage, this would not work due to the belt tensioning if it were attached to the plastic body, but it ... MoreWorks very well, lasts around 30-40 mins continuous runtime on a 5Ah battery with moderate to heavy sanding.
