very good couple months with reel. smooth and lightweight. However this is the first reel I've had that ever froze. I did nothing different from the way I treat my Penn reel and it still got corrosion. cleaned after every use. never dunked in saltwater. I understand not a sealed reel but still this shouldn't happen and especially not in first couple months of ownership. fish mostly back bays saltwater. I haven't contacted manufacturer yet but I may just have it cleaned.

This is the 2nd Stradic I own. I bought my first one about 10 years ago an liked it so much I bought a 2500HG and a 4000 HG. I've already caught multiple bass and trout on them and am very happy with everything from the smoothness of the bail for casting down to the sensitivity of the drag and how smooth the retrieve is. I don't like skipping fish on the water so I normally try to give the fish a bit of a fight; so I set my drag pretty low and let my real sing to me a bit but when I got them close just a quick turn and it held them in place. Fantastic real so far.

I was expecting to have to wait a much longer time to receive the reel I ordered since it was coming from overseas. It only took a couple of weeks. The reel is amazingly smooth to reel in; almost like butter, effortless. The drag is the same. I cannot wait to hook up with trout using light line. I will be awesome.

This is the 3rd Stratic I have purchased over the last 10 years. This one is silky smooth and the drag is excellent! I just wonder why they did not put an antireverse on the reel? Also, it is very difficult to trip the bail. The reel just stops when it gets to the trip position. Then you have to absolutely have to force it to close the bail.Overall, the reel is really solid. Although, with the reels made today I probably would not by one again!
I'm absolutely shocked at the quality of this reel. Is it smooth when you reel it, yes. BUT the noise is ridiculous. It's not quite when turning it slow, even worse when turning it fast. In no way am I paying this price for l noisy reel. This is obviously why Shimano's older model reels sell for what they do (even used ones), because these new ones are not worth the money. Even the new Shimano "Sustain FJ" is the same way. Just tried one out a couple days ago... They really cheapened these up, throughout the last hand-full or years. My 1998 Shimano 2000 Sustain FA is quieter then this and just as smooth... Unreal!
I have been somewhat dissatisfied with Shimano products the past couple of years. The quality of their reels has deteriorated. They are as solid and smooth as they once were with many reels having a slight wobble now. you have to go to their top of the line to eliminate this where other manufactures like Lews, Abu, Penn, Diawa, and Pflueger manufacture quality mid range reels.
recently lost my favorite Stradic 3000FJ and want to replace it so went to BP to check out the FL. What in the world is Shimano thinking? No reverse lever? Whoever made that decision must not fish. There are plenty of reasons to have a reverse lever so you don't have to open the bail or loosen the drag to take line out. Even worse, the angle of mounting arm that attaches to the rod is such that when you are holding it, it is very uncomfortable, almost as if it were intentionally designed to hurt you as it grinds against the bone of your finger that fits behind it. Guess you have to have small hands and mine are not that out of the ordinary in size. The Vanford is the same way.
Looks like I get to write two reviews since I have both FL 4000 and 5000 purchased here. Have noticed Daiwas on sale on both sides of the big pond (as much as 50% off if you shop Japan). What Shimano did with the new 2019 Stradic even put their $400 Sustain temporarily out of business. I'm sure we'll see competing upgrades from Daiwa soon, and and a new long-stroke Sustain that will also fit '18 Stella spools. The Stradic really comes in 3 bodies with different spools. The 1000 (and 2000 sizes in Japan) are common with 13.5 mm stroke (fits S-27 spools); the 2500 and 3000 17mm stroke (S-20 spools), 4000 and 5000 19 mm (S-28 spools). In spite of that, have my 5000 spooled with 300 yards 30-lb braid.Started with not liking the flat tee handle on my 4000 - it seemed to catch everything - so swapped the tee knob for a round Yumeya knob, and since I wanted a spare spool, anyway, found the matching Yumea 1520 spool that downgraded the line capacity - my 4000 with reduced spool capacity still holds 275 yds 15-lb braid.Awesome reels, double points at TD add up - and write those reviews.
The Shimano Stradic is one of the smoothest reels I have used. I’ve used this reel in some tough environments here in Western Pa., from harsh winters to humid hot summers. This reel holds up well. The 2500 and 3000 models are the ones that I prefer on wading rivers because of line capacity. The 1000 model is much lighter but the line capacity falls short on longer wades. Another thing about the 2500 and 3000 model is that the handle is bigger for cranking and in swift current it sure helps having that as you fight a 20 inch bronzeback. This is a mid-range reel that works better than the price. I own the first model that came out and still use it. This reel could last a lifetime, if cared for properly. I've had 2 of these reels for 15 years or so, they are 2500 reels mounted on St.Croix tournament and elite rods. The reels are great and so are the rods. The Tournament rod is 7 ft med light the Elite is 7 ft med. This med light is great the stradic reel is awesome, I strongly recommend this combnation, caught a 5 # bass on 4# line on it it performed flawlessly. I've caught many smaller bass using 1/16 oz mimic minnows on this lighter rod. I know this is. for the reel but this. rod/reel match i.e. great, neither would be as great if it wasn't for the great match.
