Really couldn't recommend this lens more! I'm a professional using this for events and portraits on Canon EF and RF bodies (the latter with an adaptor, but it's actually fine...). It's optically superb: it's razor sharp and has no noticeable chromatic aberration even wide open. There isn't any vignetting or loss of sharpness in the corners of the frame either, unlike many in this class, and it's stylistically so clean - the bokeh is especially smooth and unobtrusive and the colours are true and strong.I've had a couple of issues and they seem fairly common, namely focusing. On my 6D it was slow and inaccurate even after adjusting it with the Sigma dock thingy, and although its manual focusing was fine, that wasn't practical for the events I was doing. On my 6D it was slow and inaccurate even after adjusting it with the Sigma dock thingy, and although its manual focusing was fine, that wasn't practical for the events I was doing. Thankfully, it's now working really well with my mirrorless body, so I'd have a think carefully before buying if you own a DSLR, but you'll have no problems on any Z/R/Sony system. My other (big) problem is that the mount came loose and needed repairing. It was about 5 years old when it became unusable, and it wasn't cheap to fix. However, I got it sorted without a second thought: I could have bought something else, but I absolutely love this thing - I felt like I'd lost my right hand when it wasn't around! I'm not sure why it happened, but I don't abuse my lenses and wasn't doing much photography when it broke - although maybe being handheld and hanging off straps for jobs contributed to the damage. It was just odd, because it feels like a very well-built lens - satisfyingly heavy and beautiful to hold and focus manually.I've owned two Canon-built 50mm lenses, the 1.8 STM (nifty fifty) and the 1.4 USM (the ancient, non-L). The 1.4 is the Sigma's closest competitor, and I've seen it used by lots of pros. It's absolutely awful. Its focusing on Canon DSLRs is probably better than the Sigma's, but the image quality of the Art puts it in a completely different category. I haven't tried the higher-end Canon EF and RF 50s, but I really can't imagine them being any sharper and rendering better than the Sigma.I really, really, really recommend it. The little niggles are negated by the immense beauty and unparalleled sharpness of the images it creates on even 12-year-old bodies, and really if you have a modern mirrorless camera you shouldn't encounter any focusing issues. You can't do better for Canon (and I've heard, Nikon too).

I’ve used various Nikon lenses, the 24-70 2.8E (also the tamron G1 variant) the tamron 70-200mm2.8G2 (very sharp lens btw). The 85mm 1.8 the 50mm 1.8, and all of these lenses I’ve had to stop down at least one or two fstops (especially the 85mm) to avoid Chroma-aberration (CA). If you wear glasses, it’s kind of like that feeling when you get brand new glasses and everything is clear and sharp. I wanted to use the 50mm over my 24-70mm at my recent shoot because the 24-70mm felt like cheap glass ($2000 lens). Yea the build material might not be the best (plastic) and it might not be weather sealed, but I think my money was well invested. It feels great in the hand, it’s the size of the 24-70mm. The lens hood “pops” in place and it feels really good when it does. I’ve considered selling my 24-70 and 70-200 and investing in the 24mm and the 105mm ART lenses. But being a wedding photographer I need that zoom flexibility, so maybe I’ll just get 2 more bodies and lug around 3 cameras with all primes (is that a thing?)....who knows. But this lens takes the sharpest pictures I’ve ever seen. (Psst I think it took better pictures than my friend canon 85mm 1.2L lens). I barely used to use my 50mm (the Nikon 1.8) but now the sigma 50mm 1.4 is all I want to use, and it’s all I use unless I need to go wider. I say get the lens, you won’t be disappointed. It’s also worth noting I didn’t get the calibration mount that sigma sells, not sure if I got lucky with mine being pretty accurately precalibrated. I hear a lot of people have issues with that.

This Len's clarity, sharpness and accuracy is extremely high. I use digital correction software that corrects lenses innate geometric barrel and vignette characteristics that have been mapped out for particular lens body combinations, accommodating changing values for focal length, focus distance, and apeture. This Len's doesn't need it. Typical base corrections for other lens show comprehensive changes in the image before and after correction (for the better). With this Len's there is hardly any discernable difference. It is a class act with fast silent focussing, and outstanding performance. There is a reason sigma will refit new camera body mounts for you for this Lens... once you have one, you will want to keep it for every camera body you own in the future. ... MoreThis Len's clarity, sharpness and accuracy is extremely high. Fine but auto focus doesn't work
19 November 2024

I read some reviews on this lens and it seems it needs a firmware upgrade to get the autofocus working. To be fair I bought it only for image sharpness and so the lack of auto focus doesn't bother me. It also seems that the focal plane lies slightly behind the point of focus detected by the camera i.e. it needs a firmware upgrade and recalibration. I can work with these points so I'm not bothered as it was brand new and less than half price and gives possibly the sharpest image I've ever been able to produce. Hence I'm fine with it but others may not be. A

Great but needs the firmware update
8 December 2020

I can tell this lens is going to be amazing but I knew ahead of time that I might need to purchase the usb dock and do the firmware update. At first, I was super happy with the lens just testing at Thanksgiving with some candids with my family, it seemed to focus much faster than my Canon 50mm. But, then I took it with me for an actual session with a new client (which maybe I shouldn't of done) but I was excited!! Anyway, there were times that I could not get it to focus at all! Nothing I did would get the focus to work. It became frustrating! One of the things that appealed to me with the Sigma lens was reviews talking about very little chromatic aberration. I'm really hoping that after the firmware update, some of these issues go away because it will be hard to have this as a go to lens with these issues. This lens is super heavy!!! Just giving a heads up on that! Other than that, when it would focus, it was fast to focus! My images are pretty dang sharp and I'm excited to see what this lens can do with the update.

Magic Piece of Kit!
6 February 2023

All the magic of a prime lens. What a superb piece of kit. It is such a pleasure to own and inspires such confidence and willingness to experiment. I made this purchase principally for the purpose of astrophotography and already it has proven its worth. Whether manual or autofocus, in darkness or low light, the light gathering capacity and quality of image is remarkable. I had had some reservations about fitting a third-party lens to my Nikon D750, but I now have no hesitation in making Sigma my next lens choice. A beautifully designed and crafted item and a great complement to the Nikon camera body.

We have a photographer community that really like Sigma Art Lenses. After reading many articles, reviews and product comparisons, I decided to go with this lens with high expectations. After about a year of regular use, the lens is coming apart. I have a sony lens that I have used on its side and its still going solid. At first, the autofocus started failing, and the lens wasn't detected by the camera in the middle of photoshoots. Right now, the lens is all loose and I feel it will come apart in any second. Notice the wide gap the lens has in the middle, right beside the white text, also in the video. I take care extreme care of my equipment, keep it in a padded case, and I never lend it to anyone. I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT FOR PURCHASE, THINK TWICE ABOUT IT OR LOOK FOR OTHER ALTERNATIVES THAT WILL LAST LONGER, I EXPECT MY EQUIPMENT LAST FOR YEARS. IF YOU'RE OK FOR YOUR LENS TO LAST ABOUT A YEAR OR SO, GO FOR IT, BESIDE THE TREMENDOUS WEIGHT IN YOUR BAG IT WS A GREAT LENS TO WORK WITH.

I had a multiple order and being overzealous to start playing with my toys, I neglected to adjust the camera settings to shoot raw and only shot large jpg for my initial trial on this lens. I chose it because other reviewers held it in high regard and I had done some research on comparisons with the canon 1.2 which I had stolen. I am glad I replaced it with this lens. I am a color freak and like to shoot at night with no flash. This will fit the bill easily. In my initial run with this lens and not my usual subject matter, I only shot jpgs and edited in camera raw. I am very happy with the results and raw will give me that much more and quality jpgs right out of the camera with this lens will definitely reduce my work load. [Rewarded Review] Great lens for the pro e
14 August 2023

This is a great lens for the price and compares favorably to more expensive lenses at the same focal point. The lens is heavier than other 50s I've used (namely the Canon EF f/1.8 and f/1.4), but that heft is from a lens that is solidly built. I was worried about the autofocus, but that seems to work fairly quickly. Manual focus doesn't seem as precise when trying to adjust quickly, but it's not as touchy as the Sigma 135 Art lens.I've been really impressed with the image quality from this lens and found the images sharp with a decent amount of bokeh, especially for a 50. I was actually so impressed with the lens I wanted to buy a second one for my wife and I to each have one when shooting weddings.

[Rewarded Review] One of my favorite lens!

Happy with this purchase. Tack-sharp, and I love the bokeh. I use it for indoor portraiture mostly, with my R5 (w/ adapter). I use it for outdoors too. It’s not a light lens, but because of what it can do, I don’t mind the weight. Thankful that Bestbuy carry it. I trust their products and customer service.
