I was a skeptic when it came to purchasing an all in one lens. In fact I have been researching the my lens options for over 1 year now trying to decide if this would be a good use of my money. But, after planning my family trip to Florida I thought this would be the best trip to prove this theory wrong. And it worked! This lens is perfect for an all in one lens especially when traveling with the family to Florida and wanting up close shots. Due to the crowds and quick movement through the parks, time is not always on your side to capture that awesome picture of your kids that some shots require. This was not the case with this lens. I was able to zoom in to Shrek and take up close pictures from very far away. Family pictures came out beautiful and clear like my factory lens but, with a lot more options for zooming into the subject during the shot. Color patterns when reviewing from CS5 were perfect with each shot allowing the camera and lens to work flawlessly on the subject. I was able to take a picture of my kids with several characters capturing the moment perfectly with this lens. Having the zoom options available and not having to worry about switching lens to accommodate the crowd or location I was provided or limited to make each moment turn out brilliant. This lens captured wonderful pictures for my family and I to cherish for years to come. And most of all, my shoulder was saved not having to carry three different lens like I normally would. Overall, I was a skeptic for the all in one lens, but after using this lens on our family trip, I will not be placing this it in a pouch for quite some time.

This is a great lens. I am actually using it with my Canon EOS M200 with an adapter, and it works wonderfully. The macro ability is amazing. The pictures I included are demonstrations of the macro and zoom. The moon picture is cropped, so that you can see the slight chromatic aberration (the pink and blue along the edges), at extreme zoom and on very high contrast subjects. The lens I got was listed with a condition of "Bargain", and it does look like like it was previously used, but it is completely functional and the image quality is great! "BARGAIN items are 70 to 79 percent of original condition and priced to sell. More than average wear for the age of the item, and may have dents, dings or finish loss. This is a fine product which is going to be my every day lens. Not to heavy for it's wide range. It is perfect for travel photography. My journeys involve photographing a lot of nature scenes, building and street activities and numerous team and individual sports. The wide range of focal length and fast focusing is perfect for this type of photography for me. The Macro setting is also easy to use and the ability to move in very close is a good selling point. Great value for money!

I use the lens as a walking around lens. I also realize that an F:/3.5 lens has limitations. And is super for outdoor photo taking. Indoors, I have to move the ISO up to between 400-800 to get anything worth looking at. Outside the lens works well at ISO 100 in daylight at around F:/6.3 to F:/8. I am finding at F:/8 and F:/11 and ISO 200 to 400 the lens performs well. Much below ISO 200 and you'll have to move your speed down and shoot almost wide open... and at 300mm or all the way out you need a speed of at least 1/450 or 1/500 to stop any camera movement. Remembering the rule of thumb of camera speed equals or is faster than the longest MM reach of your telephoto lens. Remembering the rule of thumb of camera speed equals or is faster than the longest MM reach of your telephoto lens. I have attempted to violate the rule of thumb with mixed results..in other words uneven exposures. For me the lens did AF fine - but you have to be careful of just what the AF is focusing on - if you use backgrounds that have much contrast - then the AF will pick up on the background and may leave the subject out of focus. I use spot focusing and try to find something on the subject that has a lot of contrast and use that spot to get the AF to work. This technique seems to be working just fine. At times the lens would hunt for the subject I wanted in focus...I guess my ESP was not strong enuff to tell the lens what I wanted to be in focus. I was shooting a baseball game thru netting behind home plate. The AF would sometimes seek the netting instead of the players on the field. This can be frustrating and cause missed shots. I used the technique of zooming back to 28mm to allow the lens to see the whole field and then re-zoom and refocus on the subject - once I had the subject in focus - I zoomed in and shot away - I also moved away from the netting - and had no further problems. BTW I did use the lens in a macro fashion - it is not like a close up macro that you might be used to using - but does deliver good usable shots close up using the tele aspect of the lens. Would not recommend this lens for indoor professional work - unless you have a separate flash or studio floods. This lens would not work well in say wedding photography inside a church without a large flash (strobe) separate from the camera. And some folks do not allow flash during the ceremony - so.... be your own judge on this one. Sporting events - if you are pre-focused on a point and the play moves into that point then good. If you try to focus as the play moves - not so good - so, sports that are slower moving - golf tourneys, gymnastics (if you are pre-focused).. stuff like that - football, basketball, hockey, not so good.. would be a challenge to produce anything worth looking at.
I got this lens because it was relatively light weight with good reach and affordable. Not too many long lenses that meet this criteria. Beside I have a Tamron lens for Olympus M-10 , although a little shorter, that can produce some really good images under the right settings. So it was worth giving this Tamron lens a try. The consumer reviews were so- so to good. I may be pickier than some but I was disappointed overall with the results I got with this lens although there were a couple of keepers. Color and contrast were ok. Sharpness was inconsistent, CA was present, and the lens hunted for focus. I found most images to be just a little fuzzy no matter what aperture I used and no matter what speed the camera was set on. I did not use a tripod although I did brace ... This lens goes back- sorry B&H Photo. I would not recommend this lens. Save your money and get something better.
My stuck 18-55 lens was ok, this lens was suggested to me by a friend. Its a good value but it essentially is the 18-55 lens but with zoom potential. My slight diss appointment is really my fault in not knowing enough about lenses. I really wanted more of a wide angle lens and as I noted, this is not.its the same 18mm as my factory lens. With that being said, it is a good alternative to the stick 18-55 because you have a zoom feature and the lens telescopes down to a compact size when using the 18mm.
Thank you so much! Being sold as-is the lens itself only has minor issue, the focus won't stay in place as you move around and a few internal dust which I cleaned very easily but with this I was able to fix another lens.
I bought a D700 to try full frame and use my old Nikon lenses. I wanted an inexpensive universal zoom lens with auto focus to see how the modern system works. I've been a well satisfied Lumix Micro 4/3 guy for years and am familiar with modern auto everything cameras, but not full frame. This Nikon zoom is pretty old technology. It doesn't focus close, the zoom has a little "grind in it", not smooth, and the front rotates as it focuses so it needs a rediculous huge round lens shade. It's a compromise. Worked fine, decent results, but clumsy. If I had looked more carefully I would have noticed the Tamron 28-300 zoom a newer and more versatile lens, macro focusing and a better zoom range than the Nikon lens I'm reviewing here. It's clean and compact. It is pretty well ... MoreI bought a D700 to try full frame and use my old Nikon lenses. This lens fills an important gap. I shoot with a Canon 5d Mark iii, which I love. I shoot with a series of L lenses, which I also love. However when I travel, I am getting tired of dragging around four or five heavy lenses, especially when I travel by air. This lens helps it has great range and is very light. This lens and one more (for the wider angles, or on some trips, my super zoom) are all I need. I admit, I am a little embarrassed to mount this on my camera, but I am working on my insecurity issues. As concerns the results, I compared the results. There are slight differences noticeable when I blow up the pictures, but they are acceptable. If I am going for a specific high quality print that I expect to frame or sell, I will probably continue to use the ... MoreThis lens fills an important gap. But if I am on vacation, this lens is great (I only wish for a larger aperture, but I can live with that). I highly recommend this lens.
