Generally, I love this lens. The only two issues I have encountered both relate to closeup photography. In low light or zoomed in as close as possible, the focus can wander. And if the lens is pointed down to the ground, it will creep, quaranteed, because there is no way to lock the lens when extended. These issues are an annoyance, but are manageable. For landscapes, the lens is an excellent bargain.

This is a great lens and for a great price as well. I needed/wanted (same thing...) a lens for my full frame Sony a99 camera. I couldn't yet buy a higher-priced full frame lens. Since I have had Tamron lenses before...and read MANY of the reviews, I decided that this was the walk-about lens I needed. It's great for distance, micro (using telephoto). I do volunteer photo shoots for a local nursing home...and that has varying degrees of light and I can be across the room and capture faces and expressions without intruding. My one complaint is when using manual focus, the ring is "rough" and isn't a smooth as I'd like.

Pros:Cons:Other thoughts: I had a Tamron 90mm macro and loved it, even regret it after sold it and got the Nikkor 105mm VR. I have a Tamron 24-135mm and use it most of the time and love it. Base on those experience and other reviews about how good this 28-300mm performs on D700 and almost half price than the Nikkor so I ordered it. Unfortunately, the VC didn't work and kept jumping and couldn't lock and focus, so I returned for refund.

I had to budget for the amount of equipment to bring in my carry-on (computer, work stuff, etc) and could not bring a big lens, so this was a compromise. The lens worked well, and I got good images while bouncing around in the back of a safari vehicle. The compact size also worked well in other locations. As I do with all my lenses, I put a daylight filter on to protect the front glass, but this caused just a hint of vignette.
I bought this lens as a do everything lens for Nikon D700 and D3 cameras. None of my Nikon lenses cover this wide range of capabilities with an FX format camera. The Tamron macro and 28-300mm lens is a very light and compact lens with a wider zoom range than anything made by Nikon. It's amazing Tamron fit this much performance into a compact light package. While it can't compete build and quality wise with the Nikon lenses, it does an excellent job for what it was designed for and is an excellent value. The zoom lock on the lens is great for travel. I use manual focus all the time with this lens and it's really sharp. The autofocus is slow compared to Nikons and sometimes hunts for the right focus but that is not an issue for me as I manually focus most of the time. ... MoreI bought this lens as a do everything lens for Nikon D700 and D3 cameras. The autofocus is slow compared to Nikons and sometimes hunts for the right focus but that is not an issue for me as I manually focus most of the time. The VC is excellent and actually works more effectively than the more expensive Nikon lenses I own. At 300mm it's rock solid. It's held up well during my travels with it. You do want to be careful with it due to it's light construction. I try to avoid banging it around. As a do everything lens on FX format Nikon cameras, I've been pleased with it's performance and the macro and 28mm to 300mm zoom range. On DX format cameras you get a 42mm to 450mm zoom range with excellent VC performance at 450mm. Most lenses are difficult to hold steady without a tripod at 300mm or 450mm but the Tamron 28-300mm lens does it with ease. This translates to better pictures. I wish Nikon made a lens with this range of capabilities for FX format cameras. When I'm traveling and don't want to haul a bag full of lenses for an FX format camera, this Tamron lens does a lot of jobs well. Any lens that covers macro and a wide zoom range has trade offs and cannot compete with specialty niche lenses. You expect that. I've been pleasantly surprised with how well this lens covers most situations. I've used this lens on a Nikon D40, D90, D300, D700 and D3 with good results. Some reviewers have had durability issues with this lens but I have had no problems.
The lens is sharp given the design limitations of having such a broad range of focal lengths. Although not quite as sharp as my Nikkor zooms with less focal length range, I find the images very sharp at 50% enlargement and acceptable at 100% enlargement. I do not plan to make 30" by 60" enlargements, although these would be fine, viewed from a normal distance. The convenience of having to avoid swapping lenses while doing street photography or travel photography is well worth the reasonable pricing for this lens. I also find the build quality excellent and the vibration control excellent.
This is a very good lens to carry if you have a smiple project and you don't want to carry many lenses. It is exactly why I got this lens. Now there are some good things and some not very good things about this lens. Pro: 1. Versatile and lightweight 2. Wide range between wide angle and tele (mostly if you're doing full frame or film cameras) not so much in APC and small digital. 3. Good camera manufacturer 4. Cheap compared to Nikon lenses (which I love very very much) Con: 1. Aperture (lens opens up at 5.3 or something) which does not make it a very fast lens especially for low light or sports photography (i do lots of car racing photographry). Of course I compare this to my fast f:2.8 lenses from Nikon that cost almost $2000 each 2. Of course I compare this to my fast f:2.8 lenses from Nikon that cost almost $2000 each 2. Lens is considered soft which means you won't get the same quality or sharpness you can expect from a Nikon lens 3. In digital bodies like the D80 which has the small APC sensor, you won't get the full image or the true wide angle of 28mm.
I purchased this lens to replace the older version of the 28-300 zoom which failed and was past the manufacturer's ability to supply parts. This newer lens is smaller, lighter, and focuses faster that my original lens.I am pleased with Tamron lenses. They provide good performance at a reasonable price range.
I was surprised by some of the other reviews. I own several Nikon lens, however, this lens stays on on my D300 most of the time. It and its wide angle companion, the Tamron DiII AF 11-18 f4.5-5.6, have traveled throughout central China, Teton National Park, and kayaked the Florida Everglades National Park with me over the past year with virtually no problems. These two lens provide almost continuous focal length coverage from 11 mm to 450 mm for DSRs with APS-C sensors. The 28-300 mm is amazingly light and much easier to carry around than Nikon glass. The ability to lock the barrel at 28 mm is particularly useful for physically active photographers. In general, image quality is excellent (examples at [@]). The lens can be occasionally slow to focus .
This lens is sharper than the newer model but it is also a bit heavier, which is good for those with big hands. It is really a bargain compares to how much the newer model cost and outperforms the newer model in virtually all categories except size and weight. Plus it's made in Japan unlike the new model which is made in China. Keep in mind that with a superzoom lens it's a good idea to stop down once or twice for maximum sharpness, especially at the extreme ends. If you can get this lens for around $150 don't think twice. It really is a good performer and will not break the bank.
Tamron AF28-300mm A20 f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC Macro Zoom Lens with Built in
The 28-300 mm XR (Model A06) zoom achieves a remarkable 25% reduction in size, and 28% reduction in weight compared with the previous 28-300 mm (model 185D) - making the A06 the smallest, lightest 28-300 zoom in existence today. To achieve such compact, lightweight lens design, Tamron further improved upon the Moving Triple Cam technology introduced in the 28-200 XR (Model A03), achieving a solid, stable two-step extension action mechanism to attain the 300 mm zoom setting. XR (extra Refractive Index) glass is effective in reducing the optical length of the lens through high refractivity. LD (Low Dispersion) and AD (Anomalous Dispersion) glass minimize loss of sharpness caused by color blurring at the tele end of the focal range, while ensuring vivid, quality imaging. The ASL lens technology compensates for spherical aberration to achieve outstanding image quality. At the same time, reducing the number of elements results in a more compact, lightweight lens package.
