I like the fantastic video quality and the viewing angles are better than others, allowing you to see more things, including packages left next to the door. It's easy to set up and includes step-by-step instructions for installing the app. It is fairly thick, so make sure you want it sticking out wherever you are placing it. It includes a couple of wedge adapters (up/down or left/right slant) so you can orient it to get the best image. It includes most of the the standard doorbell features in the app with free access to local storage on an SD card and app alerts. The biggest downside for me and many others is that there is no local streaming support, even with hard-wired power; no RTSP streaming. That was a deal-killer for me since I use a local NVR.

Easy set up, great visuals, intuitive app

I appreciate having a battery option for this doorbell camera system because my old doorbell transformer will not work with such devices. The tapo D225 was super easy to set up using the app. I had no problem pairing it to my home wifi or its separate chime that's plugged into an interior outlet.I determined the angle mount option was best for me. I was going to use the 3 M adhesive patches but the instructions and video I found on line were not clear about what went where. So, I attached the mounting plate to the wedge with the 4 tiny screws supplied ( you'll need a small tip phillips), drilled pilot holes for the mounting screws and attached the plate and wedge to my molding. The camera is functioning fine right now and is not being set off by cars driving down ... MoreI appreciate having a battery option for this doorbell camera system because my old doorbell transformer will not work with such devices. But, the unit can be lifted off the mounting plate and taken. If you record with an SD card rather than subscribe to the cloud service, your data is gone with it. There is an alarm built into the back that should be triggered if the unit is lifted (pressing certain other controls turns it off if you are removing it to charge it or clear the SD card). But, there is supposed to be a function in the settings to turn the alarm on. I can't find it in device management settings. Also, I cannot delete recordings on my SD card in the app. I tried reformatting the card to erase all the accidental events during installation and that didn't erase them either. I will likely have to connect the SD card to my computer to manage it. But, if you have the tapo cloud service, which isn't that expensive, it's not an issue. So, I will experiment with the 30 day free trial offered and decide if I will opt for it.Overall, I'm very pleased with the quality of the 2k picture and this camera doorbell's functionality, including the close up and voice features but there is a lag to the sound that requires patience for both parties using it to communicate.

Easy to set up, and works great

I had a somewhat traumatic experience with setting up my last doorbell cam. To say it was a challenge, misstates considerably. Thus when I opened this very complete set, I was worried. I should not have been. Tapo provides most everything you need to get your camera up and running. That does not mean you need it all however. This camera will run with 5.8Ghz wifi, that was the downfall of my old camera. The app will walk you through set up of the camera, the indoor chime, using your existing doorbell wiring, (or not) and even getting your SD card set up if that is an option you are interested in.The kit has a flush mount, a left/ right angled mount, and an up/down angled mount to help you perfectly position your camera. This is the only finicky part. The flush mount is integral to the mounting system. It attaches to the other mounts using a phillips #0 screwdriver/screws. That screwdriver was not in my box. I have that size, so no big deal for me, but that may not be true of everyone. My other quibble is that there is no lock screw, just a spring loaded latch. I then realized that short of a steel box on the camera it was vulnerable. The night vision is great and the switch dark to light by turning on the porchlight was instant. All in all a great product. I will be looking at Tapo for other products.

Fantastic doorbell

I was not sure how well this door bell would work, but I was extremely surprised at the high quality product it is. The sound and audio quality is amazing. It’s super easy to set up and connect to. You can record on it too. It includes privacy mode if you need it. I love that it auto detects people, cars, and packages. You can fully customize everything on it too. I like being able to decide between phone notifications and calls when someone rings the doorbell. The chime that comes with it is loud, but not too loud. You can also customize the chime for sound and volume. You really couldn’t ask for a more affordable and great quality doorbell. I highly recommend giving it a try.

Great smart doorbell with awesome features but had issues.
31 August 2024

It’s interesting how everyday situations can lead us to invest in new technology. I recently purchased the Tapo D225 doorbell camera after an incident with a neighbor who refused to knock on the door because we lacked a doorbell! While I already use Tapo cameras and wanted to maintain the ecosystem.Even though I really like the D225 with its awesome features, it still has some drawbacks and problems.I charged the doorbell for 20 hours, exceeding the recommended 6 hours, but there was no indication of charging or battery status without checking the app. An LED would be handy to know when it’s juicing up or fully charged. Sometimes, we just want a quick visual confirmation without having to check an app, right? The setup process was somewhat straightforward until the firmware update. Afterward, the app encountered issues. I could view the camera feed, but editing settings was impossible. A hard reset using the sync/reset button on the doorbell was necessary. The chime also posed challenges. After another reset, the app recognized the chime, but the doorbell refused to connect. I had to manually add it within the settings, definitely sounds to me like a firmware glitch. Maybe Tapo’s engineers are secretly training for an escape room challenge?.Additionally, a white model would be preferable. Black is sleek, but can absorb sunlight and heat up. A white model would be more sun-friendly and might blend better with your front door aesthetics. Maybe Tapo will take note for their next design iteration! The D225 is bulky even with its non-removable battery, a removable battery would’ve been a smart move. Having a spare battery on hand is like having an extra life in a video game—always reassuring. Despite this, the battery has remained at 98% after 48 hours, indicating I might get a few months of battery life. The 180 degree Wide-Angle Lens is awesome, Imagine the D225 as HAL from 2001 a space odyssey always keeping an eye out. Its wide-angle lens captures more of the action, whether it’s a friendly neighbor or those pesky squirrels plotting world domination. speaking of which I had to turn off the motion because of those squirrels!Just as a note make sure you have your wifi access point close by, I had to move mine upstairs from the basement. To find out if you have a wifi issue it's as simple as logging into the app and tapping on the wifi icon next to the network connection in your settings. Anything less than -50 RSSI is good.Night Vision is good, but I think something makes my motion light turn on whenever I view the camera.Overall, the Tapo D225 doorbell camera has some great features, but it also has some drawbacks. I hope TP-Link addresses these issues in future firmware updates.

Lots of setup options
11 October 2024

I bought this after watching a YouTube review that compared it to several other video doorbells. I have not been disappointed. A primary requirement is that it doesn't require a monthly/yearly subscription, and this does not. I use it on battery, rather than wiring it into the existing doorbell power via included jumper, so it only records when there is an "event" (rather than all the time). Battery life is quite good, though I've not used it in the cold weather yet. I have other Tapo devices, and this uses the same app as they do. That's convenient. I bought a 2nd unit for the other exterior door but have not yet installed the 2nd one so don't know if one plug-in chime unit will support both doorbells.

I'm very pleased with the ease of set-up, installation, and results with this doorbell camera. It's very sensitive if set to the max level . They list Motion, People, Autos, Pets and Packages and each configurable for a specific area and sensitivity. Very clear video, good night vision if viewing area isn't lit. I have it hard wired and using the 24/7 option with a 512gb SD card installed. which according to Tapo tech should be good for nearly 40 days of recording. It will loop record, and the time line can be searched easily. This is one of very few cams offered that will provide both local storage with no subscription fees needed and dual power source. Oh yeah.. it will run on battery and record events only (Not continuous) in case of a power outage. Winner with Optional Local Storage
14 September 2024

It seems like everyone has these camera doorbells now, but I had put off installing one until I saw this. I have no interest in paying for a cloud service, and I was also a little concerned that my existing wiring might not work.On the first front, I can easily confirm that local storage works without a hitch. You can opt in to could storage, but I have no desire to do that. Videos look pretty crisp, and are quite good when the subject matter is close to the lens. It's a very wide angle (180°), so some things can look a little funny, but only a little. The app is very useful for viewing, checking on alerts, changing settings, etc. You can pick what area of the visible field for it to pay attention to as far as alerts are concerned. You can set for it to always record, or for it to only record when it senses motion. It also lets you choose to set the AI detection, as well. I've found that this causes my video to **** a bit, so I've decided to leave that off. Besides, detecting a person, pet, or package isn't that important to me.I don't want to forget to come back to my existing wiring. If you absolutely want to keep your existing chime, this may not be the doorbell for you (but as far as I know, this may be an issue with all camera doorbells, so do your own research before deciding!). While my wiring had no problems delivering power to the doorbell, I am no longer able to use my original indoor chime mechanism. My best guess is that there is just not enough power going to the chime after the camera is powered. This was a bummer, but I don't think it is fair to dock the doorbell for that, as it likely has something to do with my home's wiring or the original chime unit.Speaking of chimes, there's one other annoying thing, though YMMV: I purposely turned on both the doorbell and the included plug-in chime when I first paired the doorbell to my router, in case I would happen to need to use the included chime. Connecting the doorbell was very easy, using the Tapo app. When I finished setting up the doorbell, the app never prompted me to set up the chime. I looked around in the app, tried a few things, but it was never detected. I shrugged my shoulders and moved on. It turned out that I did, in fact, need to use the chime. If you purchase this and wind up in the same boat, you can set up the chime afterwards by going into the app, choosing the doorbell device, then going to its specific settings (tap the icon at the top right; it looks like the head of a nut.). Here, choose "doorbell", and the option to pair a new chime is available. This was a time-consuming annoyance, which which the instructions did not help. I noticed another review mentioned that the chime was set up at the same time as the doorbell, so hopefully my experience is a rare exception.Installation was very easy. It's nice that two wedges are included, as my camera is right next to a brick edge, which takes up about a third of the visible viewing area. The battery is rather big, if you wind up needing that. The instructions say to charge it for at least 6 hours before using it! I charged mine initially, and then it was over a month before I installed it. The battery read 99%, so it should last a long time. But needing to remove the doorbell to charge it a few times a year seems kind of annoying. All in all, it's a competitively-priced doorbell camera unit with a good image and lots of options. Being able to use your own micro SD card really seals the deal for me, though.
