I'm a little obsessed with 50mm primes, so I have a few of them. If you're just getting started with the Z-series cameras from Nikon, the FTZ adaptor is a great way to make use of your old F-mount lenses, but if you're tempted to try out this new glass you won't be disappointed. The F1.8S is roughly the size of the FTZ adaptor and F1.8G lens combined, so it's a little large, but when paired with the Z6 or Z7 it is nicely balanced. Optically it is a step above. Very little chromatic aberration, very sharp across the f-stop range, but with a very pleasing bokeh. It never leaves my camera. It is weather-sealed too, so you can just use it all of the time. A great lens.

Got this for night photography. Nice that it's not too gigantic or heavy. The focal length and aperture are what I'm after. I haven't shot with it yet, but I'm sure the image quality will be fine considering all the rave reviews it gets in that department. I like the immediate service from B&H and the tax credit from their Payboo card:-) I normally add a magnetic filter adapter to my lenses for ease of switching to a polarizer or ND filter, but for this lens I only plan night photos and I'll just leave the UV filter on for protection. Nice that B&H gives us this UV filter as a free add-on, too.

Nikon user for many years but this is only my second lens for the Z mount. The depth of field is astonishing. The lens is relatively compact and light. This lens could theoretically serve as an all purpose, always on glass. It's not insanely pricey and for the price, I don't think you'll find something better in this aperture/focal length combination. There's a reason many people love the nifty fifty and use only this combination. Unless you're doing a specific type of photography and need a telephoto, a macro, or a wide-angle lens, this will do everything you need it to.

Amazingly sharp prime lens. I've used the older Nikon 50mm 1.8s when I had a D300 and D7200. Those lens were okay , albeit also they were 75mm when on a APS-C sized sensor so they required a bit more spacing between the camera and subject. This is my first time using a 50mm on a full frame Nikon Z6II and I am super happy with the results so far. Used it in CO for astrophotography and it was great. I know 50mm isn't too popular for that field, but I was very happy with the results. The only downside as others have mentioned is that is is a little larger than the average 50mm lens. If you want a little more compact, maybe check out the 40mm f2 lens.
I bought my Z6 as primarily a low- light camera, so this lens was the obvious first choice as the best fast/budget native lens option. I could have used a 50mm 1.8G on FTZ adapter for less $, but why upgrade to the Z system and not take advantage of the superior Z glass? The rave reviews of this lens were accurate; it is really that good. The corner- to- corner sharpness is simply amazing. Where this lens shines is wide open, where it totally smokes the nikon G lenses. Sharpness, resolution and contrast are basically identical at f/1.8 and f/8... meaning that the era of stopping down for maximum image quality is over! This is a dream come true for astro shooters. Stars are tack sharp pinpoints of light at f/1.8, and coma and sagittal astigmatism are nearly imperceptible. This lens stays at f/1.8 pretty much perpetually on my camera. The only two (minor) gripes I have: (1) the little ridges on the focus ring collect dust/lint like crazy. (2) the internal aperture blades flap open and shut audibly every time the camera is either turned on/off and every time it sleeps/wakes up, which is frequently and seems like it would put extra wear and tear on the mechanisms. Otherwise the ergonomics are superb; it's lightweight, fairly compact and feels solid and balanced on the Z6. The focus ring is buttery smooth. If technical image quality matters to you, then the price increase vs. the 50 1.8G is absolutely worth it. If I could afford the Z 20mm 1.8 I would buy it in a heartbeat.
I really love this lens. 35mm is my favorite general purpose, walk-around, everyday focal length--especially when you can get reasonably close to the action. This is ideal for chasing my kids and pets around the house. Performance on the Z6 ii is perfect. Makes for a pleasant, lightweight, easy-to-carry package that encourages me take my camera more often than I otherwise would have.Like everyone else has already stated, the image quality is phenomenal--this is sharp glass! Way sharper than my amateur status can probably take advantage of... but I'm glad to have it.Attached photos are jpegs, straight out of my Z6 II. Some cropping applied for framing / aesthetics... but no further edits. When I just want easy snapshots without any editing, this combo is perfect! ... I'm a wedding and portrait photographer and needed to upgrade my old 50mm lens for my D610. I just bought the Z6II and figured I might as well start investing in mirrorless lenses too. SO HAPPY I DID. This lens is insanely sharp. To the point where I didn't have a macro one day and needed to do a ring shot and was able to shoot the ring at f2.8 to get it all in focus and then crop the image to make it look like a macro. I could have NEVER done that with my old lens. This one is fast too. I can shoot at 1.8 with no focus issues and the subjects come out nice and crisp. Highly, highly recommend! :)
I've been using the Niikor Z 50mm 1.8S for a few days now and have been testing it. Instead of listing the specs-list, here are the top three features of this lens that jumped out the most:1. Image quality: Strikingly beautiful due to Nikon's color science and exceptionally sharp edge-to-edge thanks to good distortion control, color aberration control, and vignette control. 50mm is a great focal length for street, portrait, landscape photography, and this lens is well-suited for most of the types without a doubt. For a f/1.8 aperture, the image quality is at par with some of the f/2.8 lenses out there. However, if it's bokeh (out of focus background and foreground) you're looking for, this Nikkor does well and not as good as some of the f/1.4 or f/1.2 lenses. ... However, if it's bokeh (out of focus background and foreground) you're looking for, this Nikkor does well and not as good as some of the f/1.4 or f/1.2 lenses. That's just physics! Overall, the image quality is THE reason you should get this lens for your Z camera body, perhaps the very first lens to invest in. It will last decades!2. Focus breathing: for those of you into videography, you're in for great cinematography in the form of virtually non-existent focus breathing. Remember how in movies and TV shows things that emerge into the scene from out of focus to in-focus? Lenses that focus-breathe tend to distort the subject coming into focus seeming like everything including the subject is coming closer as you focus in. Well, nothing like that happens with the Nikkor 50mm 1.8S. Subject and the background remain where they are with only the focus going in and out. It's just beautiful. I am not a videographer but I can imagine how well this lens will perform in such situations. In addition, the focus ring on this lens is made of metal and has a good throw, and is super smooth reminding me of my Voigtlander 58mm 1.4 SL II lens.3. Camera-linked customization: Assuming you will use this lens of Z body (obviously!), the lens makes use of two of the most important features from my perspective - in body image body stabilization (5-axis IBIS) and the ability to customize the focus ring to do other things than manual focus. This is game-changing, to say the least. The lens doesn't have image stabilization (VR - vibration reduction) but impeccably uses Nikon Z's IBIS and it's super important to get steady vibration-free images. (Quick tip - even with IBIS, make sure to keep the shutter speed above 1/50th of the second to get really sharp images.) Secondly, the focus ring customization. You can make the focus ring change the aperture settings or change the shutter speed or (my current setting) change exposure compensation. It makes the process of making images so much more enjoyable and convenient. In summary, two words aptly describe this lens: worth it
I bought this lens in 2019 but put it aside after buying a few zooms as I'm often shooting while traveling and a zoom is convenient. I returned to it recently after reading a review that raved about its performance and have fallen in love with it again. You really can't beat a fast prime for show-stopping photos and I'm a sucker for bokeh which this lens has in spades. It's a low-light, bokeh, super sharp, multi-purpose-angle-of-view monster and I love it.Some folks commented that it's too big/heavy/expensive for a 50mm but, for the performance I think it's worth it. (If that's how you feel though, I'd point you towards the newish 40mm f/2 which I also have and love; it's a fraction of the size/weight/price and has surprisingly great performance.)Some photos for ... I wanted this lens primarily for landscape and astrophotography. I realized pretty quickly that it is also highly effective for other applications, including interesting portraits and street shots. The sharpness, contrast, and color rendering are all fantastic. The autofocus (paired with the Z7) is excellent even when shooting at dawn or dusk. The build-quality is certainly sufficient, but is not quite as impressive as the image quality. But, it feels solid, lightweight, and has an easy to manipulate focus ring. If you're not familiar, it may take a bit of time to get use to the electronic focus, but after a few days it's no problem at all. This will be my go-to lens for long-exposure landscape and Milky Way shots. So glad I invested in it.
