This knife sharpener is pretty amazing! Its the most thorough sharpener I've ever seen, with five sharpening surfaces, which are described as 5 levels of sharpening stages - and provides the help needed when sharpening a knife with the angle guide, in order to obtain a sharp edge. There are 2 sharpening plates, one is coarse for really dull knife edges, and the other is fine, for getting a better edge than the coarse plate provides. The coarse plate is 220 diamond grit, and the fine plate is 600 diamond grit (the sides are not marked, but its obvious which side is coarse and which is fine when running your finger along the plate). It also has a coarse and fine setting (via rotating the red knob), and a fish hook setting (I have no use for that). So the method I use to obtain a super sharp knife edge - first holding the knife against the 20 degree angle guide, stroke the knife in a forward cutting fashion along the plate a few times. Then flip knife over, hold against the angle guide, and complete a few more cutting strokes. Do that first on the coarse plate, then fine plate, and then move on to the ceramic rod. It has an angle guide too, and repeat the same type of cutting stroke on it a few times, both sides. First with the knob set to C (coarse), then turn to F (fine). Finally drag both sides of the blade along the leather strop in a reverse fashion (opposite of a cutting direction) to finish the process. The knife blade should then be razor sharp.Yes, this is definitely better than any whetstone and ceramic rod combination sharpener I've ever used. And the angle guides help any newbie to knife sharpening to hold the blade in a correct position for maximum sharpening possibility.

I purchased this sharpener to help me visualize and train my hand to the proper angle at which to sharpen a every day carry knife. Up until using this sharpener, I have been successful at getting my blades 'very' sharp. With this setup, my blades are 'extremely' sharp. I bought a new Benchmade Bushcrafter 162 just prior to purchasing this sharpener. The knife (out of the box) was very sharp, but it would not shave hair off my arm. I sharpened said knife with this sharpener and it will now shave the hair off my face. I highly recommend this sharpener to anyone looking to get a very sharp knife with relative ease. The hidden compartment and broadhead tools are very useful as well. This sharpener is big enough to fit your hand without cramping and small enough to pack ... I got the Work Sharp Field Sharpener because I wanted a more all in one tool that was easier to use for someone with little experience. The best feature of the sharpener is the sharpening guides. You just align the item to be sharpened with the guides and move it along the sharpening surface for an easy to learn method of sharpening for beginners. The sharpener has a diamond coated fine and course side that are magnetic, and can be popped off for easier access for cleaning. There is also a compartment under one you can use for storage if you like, but it comes with the instructions inside, which is always nice to reference if you don't use it regularly. There is a ceramic rod with 3 sharpening options, fine, course, and fishhook. There is also a smaller ceramic rod ... It's much easier to learn than your average sharpener that requires you to master the sharpening technique without any assistance. I've used most of the features of this tool and everything works really well. I especially like the fine ceramic rod as it allows you to start off sharpening something without doing any real damage to the edge due to lack of experience. I have used sharpening tools a number of times prior to this tool, but I am by no means an expert, or even good at sharpening using a tool like this. This is actually a really great tool, good for beginners, easy to use, easy to clean, and the price is reasonable. 5 stars as I don't really have anything negative to say about it.

Don't think that you will just stick the blade in and draw it a couple of times and your done, it does take a little practice and skill to hold the knife or blade to get the desired results, as well as being a bit of a risk of getting cut in the process. I have used an oil stone as my preferred method of sharpening for years, and will still use my stone, but this guided sharpener is great especially for an initial sharpening to get the angle of the bevel right. The diamond coarse and fine plates are aggressive, and truly only need the number of passes recommended to cut the bevel in most cases. After using the diamond plates, the ceramic hone and the leather strop remove any burrs, and make a detailed sharp blade. I was surprised at how well this tool works. There is even a special hone position to sharpen fish hooks, and built in wrenches for working on broadheads for the archers and bow hunters out there. A note on the scissors: the angle on the blade was not the same as the guide, and I free handed the sharpening of these blades, and yes, they now cut like new. I am glad to have this Worksharp Guided Field Sharpener in my knife and tool sharpening arsenal, and, it could very well become the best guided sharpener I have used to date!I guess my biggest question now is, do i keep it in the house or the shop? Maybe I need another one of these!
I have needed an all around knife sharpener for a long time. With this being an all around tool which goes from a rougher grit diamond down to a leather, I was able to hone my pocket knife back into razor sharp condition.I do not have a great deal of experience sharpening knives, so the included instructions were clear and handy.I definitely will purchase this tool again if I need another. It is a great gift item as well.I am definitely a happy customer.Thank you.
I’d change a few things like make the diamond double sided, a file side might be nice, as would a grit between fine and course. The angle selection is limited, if a person was more ambidextrous options could be added. Preference aside this can effectively and efficiently sharpen a wide variety of tools, with minimal effort weight and complexity. I’m a knife geek, I have about a thousand dollars worth of sharpening tools in the house; if I had to pick one tool to carry with me this is it. Two, I’d add add an axe sharpening file.
I have a variety of knives, and I like to keep them sharp. To help with this, I mostly use a few Japanese water stones. It's just what I started off using for my first chef knife, so just used them for any knives that got dull. Honestly, though, it's pretty burdensome to get out the stones and soak them in water and get a towel to clean up the mess, etc.So, this portable knife sharpener was something that interested me. I've been considering getting some diamond stones for in-between touch-ups to test out for a while now, and also a small sharpener that I could use on pocket knives more easily than the giant stones. So, this was a good opportunity for me, with 2 diamond stones (though admittedly, they're pretty small. Too small to easily do my big kitchen knives, but it can sharpen my paring knives and, of course, pocket knives. This little guy comes in at a very fair price, and the diamond stones don't seem like they're going to dull or flake away quickly (as many people complain cheap ones can do.) I really like that they're removable, as well. Unfortunately, one drawback of the design means that I can't use this as my only sharpener for around half of my knives. Read on for details.I learned how to use this pretty quickly with the instruction sheet. It has you sharpen blades on 3 different grit surfaces, coarse diamond, fine diamond, very fine ceramic. This works pretty well. Each stone has a guide set in it at a specific angle. These angles become steeper as you move to increasingly fine grits, starting at 20° on the coarse, then moving up to 30° for the finest and the strop. However, I did not find all of the guides to be helpful when configured in this manner. I think they by increasing the angle, they're aiming to to put a micro-bevel on the very edge of the blade. The problem is that it's really not done in a way that puts a proper micro-bevel on the edge! The final stone is just too fine for this. In my experience, if I used the guides religiously, the blade got quite sharp on the first stone, and perhaps a little bit sharper on the 2nd stone, but by the time I got to the 3rd, finest stone (which should be giving it some of the final touches, the stone was actually not helping the blade get sharper--and was removing sharpness, if anything.) Perhaps some blades respond well to this treatment, but mine did not.The final step is a leather (I think) strop. It works as a strop should, but AGAIN, they've set the angle just a bit high, in my opinion. Also, look up how to use a strop on your own for the best results. Leather isn't very abrasive, so it takes the right technique to clean up the burrs on blade edges. Anyway, it's a nice inclusion, even if not strictly necessary for a portable tool. There's one more significant design flaw I've found, which I alluded to earlier. The plastic frame that makes up the body of this sharpener can get in the way of sharpening the entire blade, depending on the design of the handle/width of the blade. Basically, if the blade is too short, or the handle too close to the cutting edge, the handle jutting against the plastic edges prevents the very base of one's blade from making contact with the sharpening surfaces. This isn't a big deal for occasional sharpening, really, but if you were to use this sharpener exclusively for a knife that was like this, you would eventually end up with a significant heel jutting out at the bottom of the blade, which would get contact the surface before the actual cutting surface at the base of the blade. There's a workaround, and that is to remove the diamond plates from the holder (they're magnetic) and use them by themselves. You wouldn't really want to have to do this much, because they are hard to hold onto without the holder and cutting oneself seems likely. Unfortunately, at least half of my pocket knives have this particular issue with this sharpener, including my sizes of Opinels (like the one shown in the photo.) Like I said, not the end of the world, just means I can't make this my primary sharpener for them. The other minor design flaw isn't such a drawback, and is just what I've already mentioned--the bevel guides. One other thing I should note about those is that not all knives need to be sharpened to the same angle. For a pocket knife, 20-25° is pretty standard, but if your knife has been sharpened to a more or less steep angle, you'll want to free-hand it for sure. (Unless changing the bevel...but if so, you'll want a better sharpener than this for the re-honing itself.)So, in summary, it's a legit portable sharpener. It's not perfect--but honestly with so much variation in blades, it's hard to make a sharpener that is perfect for everything. Even so, it's more than adequate for what it's designed to do--be a sharpener for blades on the go. (And actually, with the way that the stones remove, you could probably use them to sharpen axes and such as well. On that front, I should mention that it does have a fishhook sharpener.) If this thing is in your price range, and you need something like this, go for it. It's lightweight and has diamond plates that are good for just about any blade. Just don't count on the angle guides being helpful for every knife, and know about the issue with sharpening the very base of some knife blades. Otherwise, solid tool!
This might be the perfect field sharpener. It has everything you need for sharpening a wide variety of blades from hunting blades and hatchets, to broad heads and serrated edges. It comes with a how-to video and this item really needs it to explain all the features and functions that come with it. There are 2 diamond abrasive edges, one coarser for badly worn edges and one at 600 grit for resharpening a normal worn edge. This is like the Swiss Army knife of field sharpeners. The diamond and ceramic abrasives will last a while but if you do need to replace any parts, you can through the website. It’s really an impressive sharpener. I’d definitely recommend watching the YouTube video to get an idea of how useful it is. It’s perfectly compact and light weight, this item is a must-have with your outdoor gear.
First of all, I'm an old school stone sharpening guy. It's a bit of a process because it needs four stones to work my way down to get to a nice sharp edge. It's a bit of a chore that I tend to put off until I need sharp tools again. So I tried this one and WOW was I impressed by the edge I got from this sharpening system!First off, I thought it was just a gimmick to call it a "field sharpener" and I was disappointed that I couldn't find any significant instructions on this system until I noticed a little thumb groove under a plate. It's magnetically attached and there was a rolled up instruction page right under the plate. That's where I found everything I needed. There are two metal diamond plates of coarse and medium grit on the 2 wide sides. On the narrow sides there is a porcelain rod with a fine and extra fine polishing sides as well as one special side for sharpening fishhooks and then on the opposite narrow side, a leather strop. And finally, near the finger grip, there is one more smaller porcelain rod for sharpening inside of serrated edges. But wait, they also included one more nifty tool too! When you remove both plates, there are some arrow head wrenches inside the handle so you can removed them for sharpening without needing to use your fingers so close to those razor edges.I found this to be such a well thought out and engineered tool!To test it, I grabbed two of my worst knives. One daily task tool that has nicks along the edge and a rounded blade that I just use for opening packages and cutting down cardboard. It's my dull scrap knife for working with scrap. The second knife being a kitchen knife that was my favorite for a long time until I lost the edge due to sawing into bone. The 20 degree angle guide helped me stay consistent on the angle as I stroked over the plates. I could feel the grinding friction from the coarse diamond plate. Within minutes, I could clearly see all the nicks ground off the scrap knife's blade as well as nice deep grind marks on the new edge.I flipped it over to the medium and withing just a few strokes, I could see the grind marks nearly disappear.I went to the fine and then the even finer porcelain and I was astonished. The edge was smooth as glass.Once I stropped it with the leather side, the edge had a mirror finish and got razor sharp! I even tested it across a piece of paper that cut thru it with only a whisper of effort. But the really amazing part is that I took it from nicked and rounded edge to a polished razor sharp edge in only about 5 minutes. Much faster and less labor intensive than my old stones method. My scrap knife came back to being a quality tool again. I repeated the process with my kitchen knife and I got identical results just as quickly. In fact, I used that kitchen knife to serve ribs and I just accidental cut through cartilage without even feeling it under my hand. I didn't notice until I saw them while serving it. The task of sharpening my edges got so easy for me that I happily honed the edges on all my knives over a quiet afternoon. Now I realize that the old process I used was more of a chore while this one was a breeze I can do quickly and easily as I need it.Not only am I extremely impressed by this sharpening system's ability to do the task so well, but it really is light and compact enough that just about anyone going camping, hunting or fishing can easily stow this small self contained device into their gear.I like this Worksharp Field Sharpener so much, I'm giving it a hard 5 stars because I've already shown it to a few people to recommended it to them and I intend on recommending it to still more people. I wish I could give it more stars!

A detailed, paper User's Guide with illustrations is also included stored under the diamond plates. This WS Sharpener easily fits in my fishing tackle box and I can take it along wherever I go. Fits nicely in my pocket too. How cool is that? This is the first knife sharpener I have ever used on my serrated Kitchen knives. They were dull and I did not know they could be sharpened. The WS Guided Field Sharpener restored them to like new by using the ceramic rod and matching the bevel angle of each serration. It took me a little time to sharpen my serrated knives, but the razor sharpened results are well worth it. The detailed User's Guide explains the whole process of sharpening to include honing on the proper ceramic rod and stropping on the leather strop. The ceramic rod can be turned to “C” for coarse, “F” for fine, and a fish hook icon for the fish hook groove. The leather strop also has a guide, and should be oiled if it becomes dry. I have a full stropping belt for my garden tools and put a little Mink Oil I purchased from Walmart on the WS leather strop. Following the included instructions detailing the Sharpening on the diamond plates, Honing on the ceramic, and stropping on the Leather Strop produces excellent results. I highly recommend this Worksharp Guided Field Sharpener 221. I do not have to press hard to cut through anything with my WS sharpened knife edges. They cut as easy as if going through butter.
