I have one of those pull through a slot type sharpeners that can give it very quick but not so great edge however when I saw this product I jumped on it. Where do I start? Well first of all soon as you get it and pull it out of the box you can tell it's a quality product. I don't say that about everything honestly I'm a bit picky and a tool snob. Well first of all soon as you get it and pull it out of the box you can tell it's a quality product. I don't say that about everything honestly I'm a bit picky and a tool snob. It has a non-slip base three sides with different grits. One of the things I was unclear as to how easy it would turn out to use was the angle guide system that's on either end. Well I shouldn't have been so skeptical because like the rest of it it's well designed. You can just very easily rest the edge on that guide and then pull it across the assortment of sharpening grit edges. Speaking of the angle guide you can flip it very easily it has magnets to hold it in place between 25 and 20°. The 20° is excellent for kitchen use It's a super sharp edge if you do it correctly and reasonably durable. The 25° is a more durable edge for maybe a pocket knife that's used for just general purposes your lawn equipment and stuff like that. You can even take a pair of scissors and sharpen them easily on this system.Unlike a lot of stones and other devices you don't need to use water or oil on the sharpening grits. Two of them have diamond embedded surfaces and the third is a fine hone ceramic surface.Despite being a pretty handy person sometimes I just don't have the patience and time to devote to sharpening all of the things I need to but this thing works so well so quickly and sets up in seconds that it's transforming my kitchen knife selection for one. The difference between having a super sharp kitchen knife and having a dull one is massive. This product also has the option of switching on or off a sort of floating system that lets it adapt to slight differences in the let's say left to right angle of whatever you're drawing across it. Unlike fixed stones where you have a need to make sure it's absolutely perpendicular to the surface the floating feature if you choose to use it let's it move a little bit I've made a video that demonstrates that and hopefully it will load. The only drawback I could possibly think of is that like most sharpening systems it would be great to have one that's like twice as big! But for the price and how well designed this product is you cannot beat it.

There are three different and replaceable abrasive surfaces to choose from, a Coarse 320 grit, a Fine 600 grit and a really Fine Ceramic. There is also 2 different angle or sharpening guides @ 20 and 25 degrees that are held on with magnets. One problem I could see and feel is the locking mechanism used to fasten the sharpening surfaces to the bench mount. The lock is comprised of a plastic tab locking under a steel rod and its very flimsy. This lock design allows too much movement or play on the surface while sharpening and feels like it could break any time you rotate it when making a new selection. With a better lock design this could be a great sharpener allowing for larger items like hatchets and axes. The bench mount does have 4 rubber feet that really grab a smooth surface and prevent it from moving around. The life span of the sharpening surfaces will depend on the hardness of the steel and the frequency of use. Judging by the amount of loss on the surfaces using this over a dozen times you will need to purchase replacements sooner rather than later. With a few improvements this will be a great all purpose sharpener, but for now better keep it in the kitchen.

In the demo video he demonstrates sharpening an axe, to do this he removes the stone and uses it by hand, a regular sharpening stone is 2” across and much safer to use in my opinion when sharpening something that can seriously injure you. I have a regular sharpening stone and side by side with this product the regular sharpening stone is better, makes a sharper knife and is safer and easier to use in my opinion. The Benchstone knife sharpener when you lay your knife across it to sharpen your normal reaction is to hold the stone with your left hand and move your knife across with your right, while pressing on the knife to sharpen; this is moving a sharp knife in the direction of your other hand, an accident waiting to happen. This is why I think a hand stone is safer. I did try to use this product as intended, it had me very frustrated and just reaching for my regular sharpening stone. The product has such an impressive presentation I had high hopes. I was completely disappointed, this product is gimmicky at best.

Good knife sharpener
26 July 2023

Granted, I am not an expert with knives, so taking on the task of sharpening them is new to me. However, I understand the importance of a good, sharp edge and how dull knives can actually be less safe. I got this knife sharpener to improve the edge on my daily carry pocket knife as well as some of our well used kitchen knives. This is a pretty simple sharpener, but having never used one before, I did have to read the instructions fully to understand what I would be doing. The most confusing thing was the 20/25 angle guides serve no purpose but as a starting place to give you an idea of how to hold the knife before running it across the surface. They do nothing else and are pretty much worthless since they don't help to adjust the surface angle or the knife angle to ensure you keep the proper angle throughout each stroke. Other than that, everything was easy to understand. There are three surfaces from rough to smooth to progress through as you sharpen. The base should probably be used unlocked most of the time so the sharpening surface can pivot a bit and roughly follow the blade angle or curve. If you lock the base, you have to be more careful that you don't gouge the knife edge into the sharpening surface. Overall, I am pleased with the sharpener and I'm sure it will work very well once I get more practice with it.

Great tool with honing surface for perfect blade
10 August 2023

The WorkSharp Knife Sharpener is some nifty gadget to have at home. The unit has surfaces – 320, 600, honing – for creating a better edge. On both sides of the unit there are magnet attached angle guides, which help you adjust to 20 or 25 degree, be that kitchen or outdoor knife you will be working on. The unit has a sturdy base with rubber legs which are holding it pretty steady in place when you are working on your blade. In the middle of the base there is a slider that can lock the sharpening block or let it pivot. When I looked at it initially my thoughts were “why would I want to have that block wobble while I’m working with a blade. But when I started the actual sharpening process, it made all the sense to have it unlocked, as that allows the stone to pivot as you move towards the pointing end of the blade and make a better contact with the sharpening edge. Please do read the included user guide, as the following is just my experience, though it’s pretty close with the numbers in the guide. The suggestion was to work one side of the blade on the 320 grit while burr is formed on the cutting edge, counting the number of strokes it takes to get there. In my case it was about 10-11 strokes. Then I repeated the same number of strokes in the opposite direction, working the other side of the blade. When I moved to the 600 grit I needed between 8 and 10 strokes to achieve fairly smooth edge. The real benefit of this particular unit thought is the honing surface – it makes all the difference! The first two steps you can achieve with a file or a stone, but I always found myself having to drive the blade through a wooden board to make sure all the burr is being removed and the blade is safe to use. By running the blade through the honing surface I really got a smooth blade, that’s ready to use.I used the unit on multiple blades and in my experience it was perfect for all blades up to 5 inches long. But for my longer blades the stone was a bit short – I had to either move it much faster toward the tip, which requires much more strokes, or just do the blade in 2 sections. Either way, you can do the job with long blades too, but just need more patience.I hope I can enjoy that gadget for many years to come.

I have bought a lot of tools to sharpen knives for the kitchen. This is a product that caught my eye right away. A lot of stones for sharpening knives come with an angle guide that you can attach to the back of the knife. After using a sharpening stone a few times, muscle memory seems to help me remember how to hold the knife, so I do not need to put a guide on the knife I am sharpening. In this case, WorkSharp has done something different. On each side of the sharpening stone, there is a guide. Because of these guides, it is easy to start the sharpening stroke at the right angle. These guides are well-made. I can set them to one of two levels by changing the way the wedge on each end of the sharpening stone is facing, and magnets keep them in place. When I move from one level of stone hardness to the next, they also stay in the right place. One unexpected part of this sharpener's design is that the maker says to move the blade forward rather than backward across the stone. It seems to work for me, but I usually use the pulling method to make a burr on the tip of the knife and then use a smoother grit to get rid of the burr. Some people might have trouble with this, but it seems to work for me.The size of the sanding surface seems to be a little on the small side. When working on bigger knives, the 1.5" x 5 3/4" size of the three grinding surfaces makes it feel a little tight. This could be a matter of taste, since I am used to a different kind of sharpening stone, but I think with more practice I will be able to move the knife across it in a more compact way. Notice that each surface feels like it is made of high-quality material. The pivoting mechanism of the base, called "Pivot Response," is the last and most interesting new feature. I could not get this to work well for me, and I think it was a good idea for the maker to put a switch or lock-out mechanism on the base so that it could be turned off. In theory, this lets the sanding surface turn so that the pressure on the blade is better aligned with it, but it did not work very well for me.

Manual vs electric each has its pros & cons

Perhaps I am just lazy, but I found that the Benchstone Knife Sharpener required too much effort and elbow grease. I have several Work Sharp electric sharpeners, and they are my first choice. However, there’s no doubt that a lot of thought went into the design of the Benchstone Knife Sharpener, and it performed quite well on my cutlery. It seemed to perform exceptionally well on larger blades, like shears, mower blades, etc. The the material had a good, rugged feel to it. Since no power other than elbow grease is required, this would be a good item to tote in the back of the truck for use when electrical power is not readily available. The 20- & 25-degree angle guides take the guess work out of properly shaping the cutting edge.In summary, if I hadn’t experienced the ease of use of an electric sharpener, it would be a welcome improvement to my manual sharpeners. To me it’s like the difference between a quality manual toothbrush and a quality electric toothbrush.

Nice Design Good for General Use

The Work Sharp sharpening system has a unique design - at least one I have not seen before. The three sharpening surfaces are contained in a small footprint due to its design. The two angles, 20º and 25º, guide the angle of the blade as you initiate each pass over the sharpening pads. As long as you continue to hold the blade at the same angle throughout the stroke, the guide helps you keep the right edge on the blade.I like the compactness of the system. It can fit in a kitchen drawer. Turning it to each surface can be a little bit difficult. I would imagine, after more use, the turning will be a bit easier. I tried sharpening a few of my kitchen knives and it worked, although it doesn't put quite the perfect edge on the blade, but it definitely does sharpen dull blades well.Overall, its a nice system and is great for general use knife sharpening.

I selected this product for review because not only were my everyday utility knives extremely dull but my expensive Wusthof kitchen knives were also suffering. This product appeared to meet my immediate needs due to its "Tri-brasive" sharpening/honing system so I decided to give it a try.It has 3 abrasive surfaces that measure 1 1/4" wide and 5 3/4" long:1) a coarse 320 grit diamond surface for the initial blade prep.2) a fine 600 grit diamond surface for refining the blade.3) a ceramic surface for the final hone. This product also has a couple of unique features that make the sharpening experience easier. First of all I noted the 20 and 25 degree starting ramps that assist you in positioning the blades at the appropriate angle (20 degree for kitchen knives, 25 degree for utility knives. The next feature that I really liked was the ability to easily transition from a fixed/locked stones to allowing the stones to pivot for ease of sharpening curved blades.I started off sharpening my trusty pocket knife mainly because it was very dull but also because I didn't want to learn on my expensive kitchen knives.Due to the short 2" blade on the pocket knife it was very easy to maintain the proper sharpening angle and in a few short minutes this knife was sharper than it has been for years. After learning on my cheapo pocket knife I decided I was now experienced enough to attach the pricey knives. The longer 6" - 8" kitchen knife blades took a bit more time and finesse but I had them sharp as new within about 5 minutes. I have no doubt that after a few more uses I will have the process down to a couple of minutes max.Bottom line - this product was very easy to use, the instructions were brief, clearly written and can it can be used by a total novice (as I have just proved to myself!).I would definitely recommend this sharpener to my friends.

Work Sharp Benchstone Sharpener

I received the Work Sharp Benchstone Sharpener and have been mostly pleased with it. It performs well and I think the design is well thought out. It is small enough to be easily portable but would benefit from having a dedicated storage case/bag. It doesn’t go easily back on the box so you can’t use that very easily. I used this device to sharpen a couple of kitchen knives that REALLY needed to be sharpened and it did an adequate job of that. I’m not very good at sharpening knives so my skills were a big factor however I really liked that the Work Sharp website has a video tutorial that is easily accessible with the QR code provided with the sharpener. The company seems to be genuinely concerned with educating consumers on proper use of their tools and I can appreciate that very much! The video said that more stones are available with a wider range of grit options which is a plus and the reference angle tabs are helpful. I didn’t think I would like the unlocked rocking action but after trying it I was surprised to find how the rocking actually makes a lot of sense with the curve on the tip of some knives. Overall I think this is a good product and recommend it. I only gave it 4 stars because I think a simple case is needed.
