This was the first cat food for kidney disease that I tried with my newly diagnosed cat, Gracie. If she would eat it, this is what I would be feeding her because it comes highly recommended by my veterinarian and the ingredients list does in fact contain the highest quality proteins and additives necessary for cats with this disease. Also, the percentages of phosphorous, sodium, and protein, which are like poison for a kidney cat, are nice and low. So, in terms of formulation, I have no complaints. The problem with this food is that my cat absolutely hates it. She does however eat the dry kibble version of the hills prescription k/d diet for cats. The other problem with this food is how expensive it is, and the fact that (in the US at least), you need a prescription for your veterinarian to get it. I can barely afford these foods, and there are a lot of people out there who can't afford them at all, or the veterinarian bill just to get the prescription for these foods. It should be made much more accessible to people/pets of all socio-economic classes, as we all care for our pets and all of them deserve a high quality diet. Two years ago my senior cat (then 15) got diagnosed with early stage kidney disease and I was devastated!! Then the vet gave me a can of the K/D for her to try. When she eats it she loves it. She goes through phases where all she wants to eat is this food and then sometimes she won’t even touch it, but I think it’s working pretty well. She just went to the vet a couple months ago and her kidney levels were great! So even if your cat doesn’t eat it all the time, I still think it helps. I give her this in the morning and leave K/D dry food, senior kibble, and regular adult cat food down for her to free feed. Like I said, super fussy cat

Cat's urine now reeks

Immediately after I transitioned my cat's diet to this food, the litter box smell became absolutely unbearable. Considering that he is in early stage renal failure and urinates a LOT, this food is not an option for my house, with its windows closed up 9 months out of the year due to weather. I had promised myself that I would never live in a house that smelled like a cat lady house, and this food crosses that line.That said, he likes the flavor all right. But he also likes all the other foods I put out in front of him. I'll be looking for other k/d solutions.

Changed formula: cat won't eat

Cans from vet with T0430227B 061 27226 stamp on back, cat picture on label, and "Chicken liver flavor" in the ingredient list smell good of tuna and have perfect consistency; cat loves it. Cans from Petsmart with T1431131B 165 27226 stamp, spoon of food picture on label and "Hydrolyzed chicken flavor" smell awful and are a sloppy liquid mess; cat won't touch it. When I talked to customer service rep I was told nothing had changed and to send a picture.

Hill's Prescription Diet k/d Kidney Care for Cats

Starting at age 15 we had blood work incorporated into our cat's annual exams. The recent annual exam revealed early stage kidney disease. Her doctor recommended Hill's Prescription Diet k/d cat food and advised us not to add any other form of food into the mix because that would make the new cat food ineffective. We eliminated everything else from her diet, including Royal Canin dry food, boiled chicken, and soft treats. She has been on this diet for one month now and wow, what a difference. She's once agin having those "mad half hour" episodes after eating, her fur is fluffy again, she's once again playing with some of her mouse toys.

My cat LOVES this!

After losing his BFF to cancer, my lonely senior cat stopped eating completely. After trying everything for two weeks during which he ate a total of about 20 pieces of kibble, my veterinarian sent us home with this as his recent blood test showed the start of kidney disease. I opened this can when we arrived home and my cat gobbled it down. I stopped him at half a can as I was afraid it would be vomited back up since his stomach was unused to food by now. No problems. I gave him the other half about 4 hours later. Again, he gobbled it right up. Must taste great to him because he had not refused it. He's been on it now for about 9 days and he is looking much better and is actually playing with a toy this morning. Hope it helps his kidney disease to not progress further.

My cat loves it, he is gaining his weight back

My cat is 16 years old and has middle stage kidney disease. He is very picky about eating special diet kidney food. I've spent a small fortune trying different flavors and brands. This one, so far, he will eat the entire serving. One thing that is important--I noticed within two days eating this special diet kidney food, it has dramatically improved my cat's behavior and health. He was really struggling to keep his energy up and was loosing weight. On this food, he is more alert, energetic, and his coat improved. He is gaining back his weight. This food really is important for kidney disease.

My cat loves the CARROTS as well as the Rice.

Our Isabella seems to love (inexplicably) the CARROTS as well as the RICE. Being a male, this stuff just smells so bad as to make my serving it to her a real ordeal. We love our Isa, so I suck it in, breathe through my mouth, and just serve her. Our vet had recommended this for her pancreatitis, as well as her kidney problems. She just gobbles it right up, and in this way, we get to give her "specials" - which is to say hand feed her. I'd say good product, even if it smells like death.

I gave this food type 4 stars because my cat likes it, but isn't eating all of it, and I think these prescription diet foods are too expensive as well. I had ordered the chicken pate k/d food for her at first, and she would NOT touch it. When I bought one can of this for her at first, she loved it, but since I ordered the 24 can care, she's not eating it quite as much as before. She is supposed to be on k/d food every day, but I can't get her to eat it all the time yet. I alternate Fancy Feast and Friskies food with the k/d food. She tried the chicken, veggie and rice k/d food once, and ate some, but I think she prefers the tuna, veggie and rice k/d more. I even think it smells good, lol! What did they do before these wonderful products?

It takes us all so long to work out what is right and wrong when we go through the tragedy or learning that we have a cat in renal failure, however, this food was immediately accepted by my beautiful boy. He eats it and seems to enjoy it. It has really allowed us to focus on other things and feel relief that he is eating what he should without harm. Thank you Hills.
