Best food for kidney disease

I also like the small cans so it’s used up quicker than the large cans. I haven’t tried the large cans yet but I think it’s not the stew type. Since we had to change his diet, Chewy gave me credit for the other food he used to eat which we had plenty of. I donated that food to a family who feeds cats and also to a family who couldn’t afford to buy food for their cats. CATS WON'T EAT IT - TOO SOFT!!

Our cats started a Kidney Care diet per our vet after our kitties were both diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. It's supposed to be more gentle on their kidneys and since their numbers were in the high range, it was time. Our cats started out actually eating this food but now refuse EXCEPT for once or twice a month. They eat canned food meals three times a day and have their entire 15, almos5 16 years. THEY REFUSE TO EAT THIS NOW!!! I don't blame them, it's SO mushy that it's just not palatable for them. Plus, when the do eat it, it ends up plastered flat against the dish because once they start digging in, it just gets pushed down...or slides down by way of gravity...if it just sits.I commend Hills for making AT LEAST TWO flavors, which is better than Royal Canin ... MoreOur cats started a Kidney Care diet per our vet after our kitties were both diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. My 15yo ragdoll was recently diagnosed with stage 2 CKD. Heartbroken and worried, I knew he needed to switch to a kidney-friendly food. My cat has always been a very picky eater, so I was worried about dropping so much money on food he might not even touch. Fortunately, my picky cat loves this food. The smell is more pleasant than other wet foods he's had. The texture is just right for him. The chunks aren't too large, and it's not so pasty that it sticks to the roof of his mouth. He happily gobbles up 3 cans per day, which is at least one less thing I need to worry about for now. Hoping his opinion of this food doesn't change in the weeks to come, because at this point he has run out of choices.

High end prescription food with good ingredients - only that my cat won’t eat it
3 May 2024

I really tried to get my 13 year old cat to eat this food. I tried mixing it with her usual diet (Fancy Feast Medleys), I tried offering it to her first, when very hungry, I tried feeding her by hand. She refused to eat, would just lick a bit a walk away. She started loosing weight. She took more to the other Hills stew, with tuna, but only marginally. Too bad, because it is supposed to be good for her kidneys. So now we are back with Fancy Feast and I’m offering this food on the side. Perhaps other kitties would like it. Mine, sadly, didn’t.

Hill's Prescription Diet has raised the bar!
7 November 2023

I worked as a vet tech for several years in the 90s, at our local Emergency Clinic. During that time, I had an older cat with renal failure who declined partly due to poor nutrition. Wet prescription food back then was unpalatable, kind of like canned cranberry sauce when you're used to making your own from scratch. Lo and behold, I have a 15yo who has been diagnosed. I could scarcely believe my vet when she said they are now making stews that cats find delicious. Charlie loves them! To the point that he is now begging/nay, BUGGING my husband to give him his canned food, even when we have to hide his medication in it. Hill's has definitely stepped up the wet prescription food game.

New formula? Now he Snubs.
1 July 2024

Not sure if is due to my recent Hill's k/d chicken stew order being a different newer formula, but my senior male cat who used to like it ok, did not like this last batch, plus got sick from it, even with different cans (from same case). I noticed it also smelled awful, compared to previous of same that actually smelled kinda good. I subsequently ordered the k/d tuna-chicken combo, gambling that it might be either the older formula, or a better batch. Not sure what I'll do if he will no longer eat the Hill's k/d stew, since it was previously the only k/d food he liked. He does however like the dry k/d fish kibble of Hill's, but that's only safe in small bits as hold-over snacks or nights, since makes him neglect drinking enough water (which is a no-no for kidney ... MoreNot sure if is due to my recent Hill's k/d chicken stew order being a different newer formula, but my senior male cat who used to like it ok, did not like this last batch, plus got sick from it, even with different cans (from same case). Worth mentioning is the fact that my vet prescribes for my cat Mirtazapine as appetite stimulant, which has always been key to him eating better since kidney disease. However even on that powerful med, though he tried the latest autoship batch of k/d chicken stew at first, after he got sick from it, he refused to eat further. When I tried mixing with tuna, he did eat some, but then got sick again, so I thought best to stop using even to mix. I would definitely have recommended the old formula, but if this is how all their newer formula is, I simply can't recommend it. Praying it was a fluke.

Our 18-yr-old cat eats it (with a little gravy added)
21 July 2024

We have an 18-year-old cat who was diagnosed with kidney disease about 3 years ago. We immediately started feeding her this prescription food and she didn't have much trouble adjusting to her new food. But since this is now the ONLY canned food she can have (we do vary it with the other flavor they offer, a Vegetable & Chicken Stew), after 3 years of the same stuff, we noticed her appetite waning. So, we began supplementing the diet food by adding some of the lickable treats that are sold in individual tubes now. We mix in the treat (it's like gravy so that's what we call it) with the prescription food, and she gobbles it right up. AND the additional gravy hasn't affected her kidney values at all -- the vet says she is doing amazingly well for her age and condition.

Outstanding Food and Best in Customer Service

First, the food: Recently, our two 14 year old baby girl kitties, Isabel and Gracie (who are litter-mates), were diagnosed with early stage kidney disease. This news was upsetting but they have been on Hill's Science diet throughout the stages of their life and have led a healthy life. So, naturally, our vet suggested they both move to Hill's Prescription k/d diet. Both girls are adjusting well to this diet change. Just a note: One of our beloved male kitties, Joshua (aka "The King"), was also diagnosed with kidney disease at 14 years old. He too was on Hill's all his life and was also changed to Hill's Prescription k/d. He lived until the grand old age of 23! We feel that changing him to this prescription diet bought him quite a few extra happy years of life. ... MoreFirst, the food: Recently, our two 14 year old baby girl kitties, Isabel and Gracie (who are litter-mates), were diagnosed with early stage kidney disease. After all, we (and the furry kids) are what we eat.Now about Chewy's Customer Service: In the past, we had never purchased pet food from anyone on-line (just toys, collars, etc.) but recent pet food shortages in brick and mortar stores prompted us to try Chewy. Well, this company is simply the best - as in every rep I've spoken to has been beyond helpful, polite and a pleasure to speak with, no matter the time of day. They answered all my questions, i.e. their auto-ship program, stock availability, etc., and made the transition of our girl's new food less stressful (as in no running around town trying to find food for the girls). Chewy is a one stop shop for sure. We have also began purchasing food for our beloved canine fur-baby, Suzy (12 years old). An added bonus is they provide lightning-fast shipping and free shipping available as well. All in all, our experience with Chewy is 5 stars all the way!

Picky Cat Like It
1 September 2023

I'm actually astonished the first time I fed this to my cat. My cat is a long-time Fancy Feast addict. Lately trying to change his diet to manage his recent kidney disease has been tough. We got many many cans of different prescription brands to try out and even non-prescription food that are lower in phosphorus. He hated them all. I did not have high hopes for this but he liked the Hill's K/D dry food so I thought I would bite the bullet and splurge on a case of this. He fervently ate the entire can. He doesn't even eat an entire can of Fancy feast with this much gusto. This is the first Hill's K/D wet food we have tried, so I will also test out other flavors but for now I'm happy we are able to feed him something that will help with his ongoing health issues.

Quantity drastically reduced in past few months

I’ve been buying this for a few years now and it used to be PACKED with meat. *USED to be. A few months ago, my auto order came and I noticed the can was only 1/3 filled. In some cases, only 1/2. !! I even called Hills to ask if their ingredients or process had changed. The representative said ‘no, it’s the same as always’. Only to see that my most recent order from a couple weeks ago, has the same reduced quantity. It’s shameful, especially with the price we pay for this stuff. Simply shameful. And it’s a prescription diet so most of us purchasing it, have very little choice. Honestly, if your Kitty has other options, I would take that other option. I would most definitely NOT recommend, not at this price. The picture is no lie. I literally just popped the lid off. ... MoreI’ve been buying this for a few years now and it used to be PACKED with meat. *USED to be.
