I like this product because it is from the time that kitchen aid still made a good quality product. I bought a new grinder, used it once, was extremely disappointed (and overcharged by the store), and returned it the very next day. I located this seller, ordered his offering, received it early, and am extremely glad to have the old style parts to replace the cutting knife Id accidentally tossed out after using it!

I used, and wore out any number of meat grinders through the 1960s and 70s. Finally purchased Kitchen Aid mixer etc with a number of the accessories. I have used the grinder for processing my own Pigs, Deer and Elk for over 40 years. The unit has served me well for all my processing needs. The last couple of years the grinder body aged enough to begin a crack in a not critical place. Then I misplaced the grinding plates, hence the purchase. This one will certainly outlast me! What more can I ask.

I bought the meat grinder along with the shredder and the citrus juicer probably about a year and a half ago and am just now getting around to trying out the meat grinder. I'm very frustrated that I spent so much money on it because after about a minute of grinding, black pieces of meat starting coming out. I took it apart to find that a meat had compacted at the back of the grinder and had turned black. I cleaned all of the pieces and used paper towels to dry it and wipe off the black inside the tube at the back of the housing where the end of grinding worm feeds through to fit into the mixer. After doing some research on the internet, I found that many people were having the same issue. Some had different strategies to deal with it, including using cooking oil to lubricate. Others are just assuming it's food safe machine oil. I tried lubricating with mineral oil and the same thing happened. I cleaned everything again and had my husband lubricate it, since he's far more familiar with mechanical things than I am. I thought maybe I was putting it in the wrong place. I tried to grind some more meat. That's when I got the black ooze coming out around where the blade and plate connect. I took it apart and found that there was black liquid at the back of the housing and inside the tube again. I've had this black liquid when I juice, but I thought it was from juice going back into the mixer housing. Juicing is messy and the juice goes everywhere. Now I'm concerned that it's getting into my juice before I notice that it's there. I'll also be checking my shredder. I haven't noticed any black cheese, but certainly don't want to be ingesting this.

Only used once so far. Purchased because of the brand quality but was disappointed when I opened the box. Price is a little high for plastic pieces. The meat got hung up in the centre after a few minutes. Because most of the components being plastic not sure if the product will last very long.
We purchased this product in 2010 and it is still going strong! We use it on a regular basis--at least four times a month. On a few occasions, we have seen oil residue on some of the meat, and this problem is eradicated by simply cutting the pieces smaller before putting them through the chute. Extra large pieces of meat place too much strain on the Kitchen Aid motor, so the meat pieces need to be smaller before introducing them for processing. We usually clean the components by hand and we have had no problem with them maintaining their integrity. The finished product looks as good if not better then the ground meat that we have purchased in the store. Additionally we have the increased satisfaction of knowing exactly what we are eating --exactly what we put into ... MoreWe purchased this product in 2010 and it is still going strong! I purchased the grinder and grater attachments in 1989 when I purchased my Kitchenaid mixer. I have used these attachments very often through all these years and they have been great. They are easy to attach and produce great results. I have never seen any metal shavings in the food I have processed with them. A crack developed at the point where the shaft is inserted. I thought perhaps this was because I had put it in the dishwasher and the cooling differential between the plastic and the metal had caused the crack. I am not sure that was what it was, but I continued to use it for all these years. The crack has somewhat widened and I thought it might be nice to replace it, so I looked on this website and noticed the negative reviews. The crack has somewhat widened and I thought it might be nice to replace it, so I looked on this website and noticed the negative reviews. I now wonder if the attachments are being made in China now, which would explain the poorer quality. If that is the case, I will just continue using the one I bought 30 years ago and hope it lasts another 20 years. I read that one reviewer had trouble grinding pork. I have found that when grinding meats, it is best to use lean meat. I make and freeze hamburger by buying sirloin when it is on a great sale, and the grinder works perfectly. After each 3 lb, I remove the blade and clean out any fibrous tissue, and then resume grinding. Many cuts of pork tend to have more fibrous tissue that clogs the grinder blade more quickly. Using very lean pork works fine. When grated cheese is more expensive than large blocks of cheese, I grate large bags of cheese and vacuum seal them. I love my Kitchenaid mixer and attachments. If the grinder and grater attachments are now of lower quality, I wouldn't buy them. That's why I now cannot wholeheartedly recommend them. If they are still the same quality, then hand wash them, ignore the crack, and use them for at least 30 years.
I love this food grinder and use it for all types of meat on a weekly basis. Today I accidentally did not assemble it correctly before trying to use it and learned that is a disaster and created most of the problems reported in the negative reviews here. Someone put away the parts to my food grinder and didn't put the little square "knife" part with the other parts and I somehow forgot it existed. So I assembled the grinder parts and it hardly worked at all. I go a small crack in the housing, had to use the pusher to even get anything out a all and thought I had broken something. I cleaned it all out and tried again and started even getting metal shavings grinding from the shaft into the meat. So I stopped, took it apart again and found a manual and realized I had ... MoreI love this food grinder and use it for all types of meat on a weekly basis. I cleaned it all out and tried again and started even getting metal shavings grinding from the shaft into the meat. So I stopped, took it apart again and found a manual and realized I had neglected to put the little square part they call the "knife" on to the shaft before the round grinding plate. Once I found it and put it on, viola, no problems at all and it was back to working as it has always worked....which is GREAT......so I wonder if that is a part that people don't realize is essential to the operation of the grinder....it can't be lost or just ignored. In any case, there is the issue that these parts can be easily lost but I clean and dry mind and then store them all assembled in a large plastic zip lock bag near my mixer so it is ready to use next time.
So I bought this grinder attachment even though I already have one (knockoff brand)because I needed the locking piece for my sauce maker. It was a last minute thing to save me from DAYS of applesauce making. The last one at the store as well. It was the most over priced, completely lame thing to not include in the saucing attachment, but also the best purchase of my year!! So as far as my opinion of the actual sausage maker, I'm sure it's great. Lol. I'm just ridiculously impressed with the saucer, and therefore the locking mechanism that comes with the sausage maker.
This review is for a replacement unit for my 10 year old Kitchen Aid food grinder that had developed a stress fracture in the body of the unit. Unfortunately, this new grinder does not work anywhere near as well as my old one did. First off, this grinder does not come with a wooden pestle for pushing the meat down the throat of this unit, so thankfully I had saved my old one. The auger of this unit does not catch the meat and pull it in as it is being fed into the unit. I have to push down so hard on the meat that I'm certain this plastic unit will soon crack and fail. As the meat goes through the redesigned cutter head it does not get cut but instead it is squeezed bit by bit through the coarse plate. Instead of creating coarse ground meat it very slowly pushes out strings of mush, similar in texture to cooked oatmeal. Because the grinding/smashing of the meat is so slow, there is no way someone could use the sausage stuffing attachment on this food grinder unit. Thankfully I have a 5# sausage mixer and separate 5# sausage stuffer so at least I was able to finish the 30# of kielbasa I made this afternoon. I would have been really screwed if I had depended on this unit for stuffing the casings. I really love KitchenAid products so I'm hoping that perhaps I just ended up with a manufacturing defect. Not sure what I'll do next time I need to grind meat for burgers or sausage. Might just have to invest in a stand alone meat grinder. Yikes, those things are expensive!
Only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because technically, it worked. I feed raw to my cats and dogs, and I had an amazing meat grinder for 10 years but it finally burned up. I was given this as a Christmas present so I decided to try it to get me through until I can get a new grinder. Thankfully I have a stockpile of ground bone so I didnt attempt it with this one. I was only grinding chopped up chicken thighs, livers, and hearts. It ground the meat up but the seams leak like a sieve. Chicken blood on my counters, all over and IN my mixer, it was disgusting. There are no rubber seal or anything, just plastic on plastic snapping together. So only buy this if you want to spend 3 hours scrubbing and disinfecting ever nook and cranny of your counter and mixer.
