The lens has horrendous pincushion distortion, very surprising. My guess is, once the lens profile becomes available in Capture One, Lightroom, etc., no one will notice it. But correcting so much distortion results in an upscaling of the center of the image by 5-7%, depending on the camera to subject distance. That means pixel-stretching and a loss of quality. But most of the time, you're going to be taking photos of people, so a slight loss of peak sharpness is usually not an issue, since the lens is exceptionally sharp and well-corrected. And there are times you may be able to get away with it uncorrected. The lens also suffers from focus shifting. Don't assume you have the best focus at f/2.8, for instance. Don't assume autofocusing will be accurate.Apart from those two caveats, the lens is made very well like other Art lenses, and it's crazy sharp. Colors, contrast and details are all excellent, and there is no hint of any LOCA/LACA. Bokeh at f/1.4 is buttery smooth with no stressful areas. And last but not least, the price is great, relatively speaking.Autofocusing speed is acceptably good. The Sony 85 GM is probably a little surer in tracking, but by and large, the Sigma is just almost as good. So far, not too many autofocus misses.Net-net, recommended.

I would give it 4.5 if I could because it's not perfect but it is great.I immediately noticed how sharp this lens was. Pretty blown away. But something that I wasn't expecting was the contrast. I couldn't quite put my thumb on it until I realized it reminds me of the Leica look and the micro contrast. Maybe that's all BS but I love the look of the photos that come out of this lens on my A7RIV.Yes, there is a healthy amount of pincushion distortion, but that easily gets fixed in lightroom or whatever software you use. Not a deal breaker for me.

What can I say, everything you read about this lens is true. It performs incredible on the A7R IV, as we need great glass with 61MP! Wide open at F/1.8, it even beats the sharpness easily of the Sony 135GM, and beats the Sony 85MM F/1.8 as well. Once the 135GM is stopped down to F/2.8, the GM might be only a hair sharper, close call. The colors are perfect, Sigma is on fire with their DG DN line. I also have the Sigma 35mm F/1.2 which is stellar. BUT, Sigma fixed the one issue aggravating with the 35mm, no lock for the aperture ring. This lens is also light! It's not much bigger than the Sony 85mm F/1.8, and we all know how big the Sigma 35mm F/1.2 is! Yes, some distortion, but I'll take that any day with everything else that's amazing about this lens. I will put this lens in the same class as the legendary Voigtlander 50mm F/2 APO Lanther when talking about sharpness.- Fast focusing even in low light AND for photographs & video.- Pin sharp wide open. You don't need to worry about shooting wide open, especially with portraits. Stop it down a little, and now the corners become sharp as heck too. This means you can use this lens for landscape too!- Bokeh is beautiful. It can get a little nervous once and a while, but any lens will do that under certain conditions.- Lightweight! Lightweight! Had to say that twice, this is after all a Sigma--surprise!- Beautiful and accurate colors (From what I can tell so far!)Included is a photograph of my Siberian Husky shot wide open at F/1.4. Sorry no beautiful models, but just got this lens today :)For $1,200 this lens is a no-brainer, you won't find a better 85mm lens for this price anywhere, on any platform.

Back in 2019, I rented the prior version of this lens for my son's wedding. It was a beast of a lens mounted on my Sony A6400, but the pictures I manged to get were amazing. I recently made the switch to a Full Frame sensor (Sony A7 IV) and this was the first prime lens I had my eyes on. The quality and sharpness I get out of this lens is amazing! The build quality is top notch as with all my other E-Mount crop Sigma lenses. Sigma has always been my favorite 3rd party lens manufacturer, I will definitely be adding more to my camera bag purchased through B&H!
No complaints. Beautiful tone and contrast w/ nearly zero chromatic distortion. Bokeh is smooth as you'd expect. I also own the Sony 85 1.8 and while it's a great lens for the price it can really compete with the Sigma 1.4. I was fully prepared to spend more for the Sony GM but the performance was so similar with the added A aperture lock that it was impossible to justify the additional $600-700.
Sigma has done a great job reducing the size and weight of the latest iteration of this lens, while improving its optical qualities. The latest 85mm focuses quickly and accurately, and delivers creamy bokeh. Beyond performance, this lens is beautifully-designed and manufactured to high standards. It offers the best value in its class.
Upon receiving this lens, I put it through my usual focus tests across a range of f-stops. I found superb sharpness across the frame at every stop. I have rarely seen a lens perform this well. And images look great aside from sharpness. I haven't found any visual problems. Autofocus works well too. The lens is somewhat large and heavy, but I can accept that given the performance.
Absolutely amazing lens. Beutiful image quality, good size and fast autofocus. The reviews are true...this lens is a gem. I used to shoot Nikon and had an 85mm 1.8G which was a great lens but tis lens is on another level entirely. Wide open the sharpness is fantastic and it isn't much larger than my Nikon 1.8G lens. I honestly can't think of one single down side to this lens.
I believe the hype is correct. I shoot Sony A7RIII and the autofocus, resolution, and handling of this lens in everyday shooting are stellar. I have not felt like I am shooting a second-rate experience on Sony as the autofocus is shockingly good. There are excellent head-to-head comparison videos on YouTube between both this lens, the Sony 1.4GM, and the Sony 1.8. All appear to be excellent lenses and I bought the Sigma because it offered smooth 1.4 bokeh, more compact, cheaper, and better contrast than the Sony 1.4GM.I shoot portraits and landscape. We'll start with portraits: this lens is sharper than what I am used to for portraits at 1.4 aperture, and so I do find myself reducing all post-processing sharpening and performing a quick softening pass for all ... I have this set as an auto-import setting in Lightroom so it's easy as this lens communicates with camera. The lens has worked perfectly with Eye Autofocus (a must!) even when subjects are walking towards the camera (about a ~80-90% hit rate at 1.4 aperture). I do recognize that being a 3rd party lens this likely means the A9 will be capped at the 15 FPS burst -- but this is not much superior to the 1.4GM's 20 FPS. The focusing is smooth, not loud or obtrusive, and does not hunt. I'm amazed at how fast if focuses considering the size of the elements that have to move in the lens. The focal plane is very nearly planar in my copy and I have been able to shoot groups standing in a straight line at 1.4 without focal deviation. Pincushion distortion is significant if not corrected, but when corrected is not noticeable although the center frame loses 5-10% of resolution after correction. This has not affected IQ in my estimation. The bokeh is amazing (be sure you are not auto-sharpening your bokeh in post -- oops!) and does not have onion-skinning or visible defects. The amazing sharp quality of this lens has really opened up a fun and interesting new style of photography for me: landscape photography with fast aperture. I will also do environmental portraits as well. It blows my mind that shooting at 1.4 aperture is 1) extremely sharp in focal zone and 2) very limited chromatic aberration. For environmental portraits, face detection autofocus is clinically precise even with distant subjects. For landscape photography, this lens has become a really fun walkaround lens and has been a really neat way to explore sense of depth in landscapes. No point to a tripod when shutter speed is 1/4000-1/8000! The contrast and color in this lens are fantastic. I only sharpen the focal zone of the lens to avoid overly sharp bokeh. I would have never imagined shooting a landscape at 1.4 aperture prior to this lens which I originally only bought for portraits, but it's been a fun new shooting experience.I truly have not found a negative about this lens that affects my shooting experience. When Sony refreshes their 85mm 1.4GM, I'm honestly not sure what aspects they could improve on for this lens.
It's well built like all Sigma Art lenses. It's smaller than its predecessor and easier handling. The manual aperture is nice. It's de-clickable. It's quiet focusing and has great bokeh. If you like Sigma, need a portrait lens, don't want to deal with the weight of the Sigma 105mm, then this lens is just for you. It's a quality, easy handling, wonderful shooting lens.I use it on my Sigma FP, and my Leica SL, as a hobbyist photographer. I purchased this as a companion to the Sigma 105mm Art lens (which I adore) because I needed something lighter, but with similar image characteristics to that lens. It does not disappoint.
