Amazing Lens!

This lens has been a game changer for me! It has taken my work to the next level. The sharpness and crispness of the photos are out of this world. Details are so clear. It captures extremely clean photos, and the bokeh is also out of this world. The price is on point for this lens. It's also got some nice weight to it, but that isn't an issue at all. All-in-all, this lens is perfect for what I needed it for. I am a portrait photographer and this lens was a must have. It exceeded all of my expectations.

I was hesitant to go with a 3rd party lens as I've had issues with them before, but I have nothing but great things to say about this lens and the whole Sigma Art line in general. It is a hefty lens and very well built lens, but is still smaller and lighter than other common pro lenses such as a 70-200mm f/2.8. It is a fantastic lens for portraits and it's almost completely replaced by 70-200mm for event photography. I personally find 50mm to be too wide and 135mm to be too long, so this lens is a nice in-between if you're considering primes in this focal range. Optically, it's a phenomenal lens. Very sharp at f/1.4 and by f/2.8-4.0 the sharpness is unbelievable. Lens distortion, vignetting, flaring, and color fringing are minimal, even wide open. The autofocus is much faster than the Canon 85mm and is more accurate (for 2/3 the price, too). I find fast primes to be fun to shoot with, and this is no exception. While it's a fairly specialized lens, it's the most common lens on my camera right now because of how versatile and well performing it is. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high quality prime in the 50-135mm range.

Bought this lens used from Adorama (E Condition). First off let me start off by saying it was in great condition, packaged very well, and arrived safely n securely. Second of all the lens is a tank!!!! Heavy as can be, maybe the weight of a wine bottle when attached to my Cannon R6. Holy smokes this lens is sharp. I am in love with it. I never write reviews, but I had to let everyone know how amazing this glass is. BUY IT.

Great fast lens

This is an initial impression only. My primary purpose for this lens will be indoor sports, but I have not had a chance to use it in this capacity.Pros:- Excellent built quality with quite a bit of heft and size (I actually like it because I shoot with a gripped body and it balances well).- Great sharpness and contrast starting wide open across the whole image. This part was critical to me as I need all the light I can get in my targeted application. Now, I have used the Canon 85mm F1.8 USM lens and I would not say I see a huge improvement with the Sigma in sharpness over the (much cheaper) Canon, but my copy of the Canon seems to be exceptionally crisp (comparing it to online review test shots of this lens) and the Sigma gives me 1.4. Also, my results with the Canon in the field are not quite living up to my expectations, but I will still have to see how the Sigma fares there.- Customization via the USB dock. Let's you customize focus at 4 distinct distance settings.- Fast and near silent auto focus.Cons:- 86mm filter size. Just looking at it, they probably could have made it a bit smaller. Also, despite it, it still does exhibit a good amount of vignetting on full frame wide open.- Auto-focus accuracy out of the box. My copy shows a strong amount of back focus (even when paired with a body that has some front focus issues) and it increases with distance. But here is where the customization with the USB dock comes in handy and allows to match the lens to a body precisely. Consistency of auto focus seems good, maybe not quite at an L lens level.

Great portrait lens, really great
6 June 2023

I need a good portrait lens and all the review said this is the one. I got to say It's really sharp. It's my workhorse for headshots. I love shooting with this lens at 2.0 or 2.8 aperture. Go ahead and check out the reviews on YouTube. If you're thinking about getting this lens and you're not sure about it, just get it. It is a great lens

Have to purchase.
15 September 2023

Amazingly clarity and sharpness, every shot was perfectly focused, the colors were gorgeous, every detail popped. We had hoped for 8-12 edits from a particular set, we ended up having to talk the publisher into a full magazine spread. 50+ shots edited from a single set. Later we used it for a low light shoot, again, amazing results, tack sharp and beautiful color range.

My favorite lens in my kit
15 February 2023

That I found this on the B&H website is a major plus, given their exemplary customer service and shipping...but this lens is the perfect addition to my camera kit upgrade. The only negative is that it is a bit heavier than I anticipated but not unmanageable. Great for Portrait photography. Fast glass, great results even at super high ISO and in low-light, especially for the price.

Sigma Art is next level
4 March 2021

I'm slowly upgrading my camera equipment. I started with this lens after much research. I was surprised that it was heavier than I expected but not too heavy for practical use. It has sleek look and cane with its own hood and carry case. I was impressed with that. I took it out for its first maternity shoot and seriously I'm in love lol. I had so many more photos looking clean, beautiful bokeh, and check this, less blurry. I have my old knock off lens and it struggled with clear photos (it could be my error) but using my same technique I had more clear portraits than when I used my old lens. I can't wait to upgrade my camera base too. Im definitely a fan of the sigma art. They made a believer out of me. When I placed my order online the site wouldn't recognize my address so I had to get creative. Other than that I am very pleased.

SpectacularSharpness & Nice Bokeh!
1 January 2017

As I specialize in High School seniors I really wanted to push myself and try something different. Over my 30 years of shooting portraits the 85mm focal length has always been my favorite. Ive only used f2.8 or f4 lenses since going digital over 12 years ago and Im really in love with the bokeh I'm seeing at 1.4 to f2 with this lens. Sure the SIGMA is not quite as creamy as a Canon 1.2 but it's all a give (one thing), and take (another) on the technical side of photography (Sharpness vs Bokeh). For me, this lens seems to be a very good blend of both. After doing dozens of test shots with all the other 85mms out there; Canon 1.2 & 1.8, Tamron 1.8 IS, Zeiss 1.4 Milvus (great lens but MF is not for me), I am very pleased with the choice I made. My first run of testing consisted of literally taking it out of the box and putting it on my Canon 5D3 body, no micro adjustments at all. My first round of tests were taken using center focus with recomposing, as that is my habit for all my lenses for years.I noticed later that my 5D3 was in AI- Focus mode, which is not my normal mode for portraits, One-Shot is. I ended up with a bit over 90% perfectly sharp images, with others very close. Keep in mind this the only non-image stabilized lens I own other than the 90 Tilt-Shift which is on a tripod when in use. In my second round of tests I took close to 50 images (Now done in One-Shot mode) plus I was selecting off-center points to focus. My keeper rate went up to 95%, with the other 5% usable but just slightly out of focus. Considering the narrow slice of focus at f1.4 I am VERY impressed with my keeper rate. Much better than the Canon 100 Macro at 2.8 (75% keeper rate) and Canon 24-105at f4 (80% keeper rate), both of which had Image Stabilization. Both were sold some time ago. My SIGMA 24-105 f4 replaced my old Canon 24-105 a little over a year ago and since I have owned it Im getting close to 100% of my images in focus, (With -2 micro adjust). This was part of the reason I had high hopes for this new SIGMA lens. I find the weight not to be a problem whatsoeverbecause I know how well it performs on my camera. It is a pro lens, and with anything you get what you pay for.

Three In A Row Malfunctioning AF, Warranty Shipping = $105

Working pro, shooting advertising for 38 years. Having read many great reviews from DXO Labs and others, I finally bought this highly-rated 85mm 1.4 ART Lens 'on sale' from B&H in late May '21. It arrived looking beautiful, but AF back-focused by 2+ inches on my Canon 5D IV at all distances, 36"-20' (tested w/ LensAlignPro Focus calibrator). I've tested it rigorously using LensAlignPro, and it's now a winner. But after eating up my "Sale Price" reduction and wasting 3 months of my time, it was NO bargain. Beware of the very poor factory quality control currently being experienced with Sigma ART lenses!!
