Owned for 3 months, used 3x a week. This rack is lightweight and easy to install/remove. I’ve had 27.5” and 29” mountain bikes on this, both with 2.6” tires. Never a problem getting the bar over the tires. I’ve tested this rack over posted speeds just to see if there was any issues and found none. The one thing I’d like to see Yakima change is the length in the cable locks, they always seem too short for my liking. The one this I am not thrilled about is the flex when rolling over off camber bumps or drives. It just would give me peace of mind if it didn’t do that. Also, it sits close to the vehicle and doesn’t flip up which I would like to have.I’m satisfied with my overall impressions for the price paid.

Three things keep this rack from being a great rack. 1) The bolts are just barely long enough making it difficult to start them into the threaded hole. 2) The same bolts have a security feature requiring a special wrench, which is supplied, but the instructions specify 15 nm torque and the supplied wrench can't be used with a torque wrench. 3) The plastic button that holds the safety pin to the rack is very weak and easily broken. These defects could have easily been corrected - why not do so?

The bike holding part is top notch, but the engineer that designed the hitch part is an idiot. I follow the instructions and it never tightens up. The pin gets jammed against the threaded rod and it takes twice the torque to unscrew it. Did I say idiots. I should have read the reviews. $300 plus rack and I had to do away with the hitch tightening mechanism and use a standard hitch bolt. I will buy the Thule next time, they are global and know what they are doing.

Pro: Loading my bike into my SUV everyday so I could hit the trails after work was getting too much of a hassle, so I wanted something simple that I could load my bike onto quickly, but also something that wasnt so big (like a 2 or 3 bike carrier) that it made backing up much more difficult or impeded access to my trunk. This fits the bill perfectly. It is nice that with the 'SpeedKnob', it it locks itself the the hitch - so I leave the rack on my car most days and don't worry much about. It's super easy to load on and off, and folded up it easily fits into my trunk if I'm getting a car wash. The rack is not bomb proof, but it does the trick for a 25lbs mountain bike. I've taken the rack and my bike down some rough roads and it bounces around a fair bit but I would be surprised if anything happened. Con: As others mentioned, the locking cable isnt very long, so I can only get it through rim and between the fork stantions of my MTB - wouldve been nice to get it through frame too. Also, the cable itself is maybe 0.25'' thick, so it would be really easy to cut through. I think it's good enough for just running into a store real quick, but definitely not for hours in the city.
3 stars for basic, simple, e-z to use rack. Would give 5 except for: Cable is too short to wrap around the frame. More serious: the rear tire cup depends on 2 plastic pins to stay put. Mine has the upgraded pins (the pin's round head has a flat spot). These shouldn't be plastic. I understand the lower priced racks get lower quality parts but if the cup came off the bike could fly off and cause an accident, besides ruining the bike. At least the e-z fix is to install a steel bolt w/nylon lock nut. Also serious: the "security loop" welded to the mount underneath, is about 3/16" thick. This cheap design renders a high quality chain lock almost useless if you pass the chain through the loop. Just cut the loop with basic bolt cutters and remove the 4 mount bolts, bike ... This cheap design renders a high quality chain lock almost useless if you pass the chain through the loop. Just cut the loop with basic bolt cutters and remove the 4 mount bolts, bike and chain gone. Also, the odd triangle shape of the loop won't allow some chains to fit through because many chains have a housing over the end of the chain. So the fix here is to buy a more expensive 6 foot chain that will reach the beefier security loops on your trailer hitch and still wrap around your bike's frame. I can only assume the too-thin loop is another compromised feature because the customer didn't spend $600 on a better rack? (That's assuming the more expensive racks have thicker loops?) Buying a $279 rack means you get a rack with poor security deliberately designed into it? Great message you're sending, Yakima.
Good single bike rack, however, Just be aware that this does not have a tilting feature so the bike will/may have to come off if you need to access the trunk if you have a hatchback,SUV, or truck with a camper. Also, because there is no tilting feature, the rack cannot be tilted/folded up when not in use. It would have also been nice if the rack had the adjustability to move left and right to center the bike to the car (my 29er tire sticks out further on the psssenger side). The front tire does dip down and is lower than the rear tire on the rack so if you’re weird about the bike being level on the bike rack this may annoy you, however, I’ve noticed that it helps position the handlebars on the bike to sit just below the roofline on my wagon and not stick out above ... You cannot purchase and attach an extension/add-on to make it carry an additional bike like that of the KÜAT or Rockymounts.Overall this is a good rack. Yakima succeeded in developing a simple single bike carrier style hitch rack.
I have a 1.25" receiver and the stinger of the rack does not collapse enough to get it inserted. I made sure I was holding my mouth right and everything, but no go. Second dislike: the plastic shelf that the rear wheel sits upon is kinda junky with the plastic. It does not provide assurance the wheel is being supported well if the strap is cinched down. Let's talk about that strap. Again kinda junky on the plastic, and very difficult inserting and pulling loose from the lock mechanism. I will stick with Thule racks, which is what I have ordered at the time of this review.
Rack is easy enough to use and functional once the bike is mounted, however comes with some design flaws. As mentioned in the earlier review the locking cable is not long enough to secure to the frame of the bike, which allows the bike to be easily stolen if the front tire is removed. Also worth mentioning, this WILL NOT fit a 27.5" fat tire bike unless you either take the air out of the front tire and refill once the bike is mounted, or by removing the locking pin and removing the end cap on the swing arm in order to pull the sliding tire catch out far enough to be able to fit over the tire. If the swing arm was designed to be a few inches longer it would solve this problem and you could also fit a longer cable in the tube that could possibly reach the frame. Good ... Good enough bike rack but frustrating to have to improvise ways to both mount and secure the bike to a brand new rack that is designed to do so.
Before purchasing this rack, I carefully read all the reviews. Another user mentioned a problem with the pins that secure the rear wheel (falling out). When I asked REI about this the manager told me that Yakima addressed that issue by using a steel pin. When my hitch was delivered, it had the plastic pins installed? During assembly of the receiver section those pins dropped right out onto my living room carpet? I bought a threaded bolt and lock nut to fix the problem. Just a terrible design on Yakima’s part. Those plastic pins are supposed to interlock in the center but they don’t seem to make contact when the bike is mounted. Do you really want to trust your road bike on this when on the interstate? It’s an easy fix but one they should have addressed. After you ... MoreBefore purchasing this rack, I carefully read all the reviews. I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL with a 2" hitch receiver and standard spare tire. I never need to transport more than one bike and I wanted something light that would be easy to install and remove as needed. I was afraid this rack would not clear the spare tire. It does with no problem. I have carried my road bike and a mountain bike on several test runs and purposely went over speed bumps and railroad tracks. The bike was very stable. At 70 mph on the highway, there was no issue. I have seen one review that stated the rack was not stable in a 2" receiver. I did not find that to be the case. When installing, the knob should be tightened as tight as possible. Then wiggle the rack and tighten more. The rack will be stable in a 2" receiver. The tailgate will only open ... The rack will be stable in a 2" receiver. The tailgate will only open a couple inches with the rack installed with no bike loaded. I'm OK with this because the rack is easily removed and installed. At 25 lbs, it is easy to remove and store in the garage when not needed. The rack includes a cable in front in addition to the ratcheting tie down for the rear wheel. I like having the extra protection of the cable while transporting the bike. The cable is advertised as a security cable to prevent theft. I'm not convinced it lives up to that. I'm pretty sure I could break the cable loose. The rack also has a lock that secures it to the receiver. Both locks use the same key (Yakima SKS system).
