As always, Estwing makes high quality tools right here in America. This camp axe is no exception. I have 2 others that I have had for many years. One I got for a Colorado camping trip back in 1978. The second one I got because I left the first at my Mom's, for another camping trip in 1993. The third one is so I can have 1 at home, 1 in the travel trailer, and 1 in my truck.

I am a Canadian Canoe Guide in the summer and have led trips in northern Ontario for nearly 20 years. An axe in my pack is always one of my important tools from clearing portages to camp firewood, my axe gets used every day. I recently switched to an Estwing 26 inch Camper Axe because over the years, my wooden handled axes ended up rotting over time from sitting in water at the bottom of the canoe. The Estwing's all steel handle is an outstanding design, super durable and is my go-to tool. The only complaints that I have, is that the head is a bit thin for splitting wood and can bury deep in softer wood, and when the axe is old and worn as mine is, it is hard to see when you put it down in the woods to gather an armload of firewood. Also I wish it were about 3 inches shorter because when I have it on the side of my pack and I roll my canoe up to my shoulder, the handle catches the gunnel and often bumps up against the inside of the canoe when I carry it. The first two complaints are easy to remedy by just not using it to split and by putting some bright tape on the handle - mine is a bit worn and all of the blue came off. I recently bought the same exact Estwing for my wife who is also a northwoods canoe guide and she loves it. She and I have used Gransfors axes for years and she finally retired her shorter handles Gransfors for the Estwing. I would highly recommend this axe for backwoods travel and when I am not on trail, it lives under the seat of my 4x4 - ready for action. Sno Dawg

The Estwing E44A Forged Steel Camp Axe with 14.75-in Steel Handle is a great intermediate size axe. It is bigger than a small camp hatchet and 1/2 the size of a full 4 pound axe. I was able to put it to imitate use after purchasing it, as it came razor sharp. I had no issue chopping up 4 inch trees limbs, that fell during a wind storm. It had enough heft to easily chop 2 inch limps right in half. I did not think I would like the rubber grip but I was mistaken after the first few swings I was in love with it, I appreciated it even more after a hour of use as my hands still felt great. I also love its all steel construction which means no broken handles. The only two cons, I can really think of are number one: I had to smooth a few of the edges on the steel neck of ... Number two: This is more my problem than the axes, it does have some weight and after prolonged use it will ware you out and make your arms tired. So make sure you take adequate rest stops while using it to remain safe.Yours TrulyCorey

The seller was AWESOME but Estwing apparently no longer makes a quality product. I had an Estwing axe 20 years ago that I used to cut down trees and rarely had to sharpen it. These new ones are a soft steel that can't be hardened (I tried in my forge). Everyone is complaining about the axe bending and the edge chipping or rolling. They are 100% correct. I'm just cutting little bushes and the edge dulls after just a few cuts. A whack at the base of the trunk of a 2" bush bent the head and twisted it. Such a shame. Estwing makes great hammers and used to make great axes. I hope they go back to hardening their axes again.
I have owned several axe's of this mid length style and this is by far the best and most well rounded one i have used. It is extremely well constructed and comfortable to use. We do a lot of skoolie camping and whenever we have an evening fire i use this axe and i am never disappointed. I recomend it to all fellow campers and always give out some safety advice with the recommendation. You should always split logs while kneeling when using a mid length axe like this one. If you miss your target, the blade will go into the ground. It you are standing while using this axe and miss, the axe could strike your leg due to the length of the handle. If only Estwing sold it with a deadblow as a set in order to keep the noise down at night when splitting stubborn logs, that ... All in all, this is a high quality product that i know i will have for a lifetime. One of the best equipment purchases i have ever made. Thanks Estwing.
Certainly no fault of Walmart…..I’m disappointed with Estwing for not mentioning the fact that their axe handle is constructed of tubular steel.Estwing once had a fine reputation of crafting one-piece products from solid steel….that tradition is now lost.
This hatchet was gifted to me. I enjoy throwing hatchets at a lumber target I made in the back yard. In the process of trying new distances and styles its inevitable the impact is on the handle or other than the edge. I went through a few of the hardware store fiberglass/plastic handle hatchets before receiving this Estwing. I am actually more abusive with this hatchet, because I can be, and it has lasted three times longer so far. The one piece forge design makes the head inseparable from the handle which is the weak point for the others (also not easily reparable). The only weakness found so far is in the attachment of the rubber cushion grip to the steel handle shank. There is beginning to be some separation at the butt of the handle but still fully functional. I ... MoreThis hatchet was gifted to me. The only weakness found so far is in the attachment of the rubber cushion grip to the steel handle shank. There is beginning to be some separation at the butt of the handle but still fully functional. I occasionally hit a screw and nick the blade. This is remedied with a few swipes with a file followed by a ceramic stone. Easy to sharpen and holds an edge very well. I have shaved my arm cleanly with it. I built the addition on my house 20 years ago with an Estwing hammer. I use that same hammer today, it just shows some character now but functionally perfect. Cant say the same for wood and fiber glass composite tools. I am a fan. After many hundreds of throws - Photos: 1) Head peeling finish, resharpened many times, no rust. 2) Overall condition w/couple cuts in grip from throwing tight groups with others. 3) Butt showing location of grip separation (circled). Your mileage may vary.
This is the best axe for all seniors. Light weight, easy to swing. Solid made axe and soft grip handle. I would recommend this fine axe to all senior outdoors men and outdoors woman. The handle is long enough to get both hands on it for a good swing. Excellent campfire axe. Made in the USA. The riveted nylon sheath protecting the axe head has a sewn strap so it can be worn on a belt. Light weight for back packing trips.
This hatchet is welded at a seam where the rubber grip begins. With normal use you’d never know. If you throw them regularly, or more specifically let the general public throw them, eventually they will break at that seam. They come with a tapered edge that i wouldn’t call “sharp”. I’ve bought over two dozen at this point. At 2.8 lbs it’s twice as heavy as the littler estwing hatchet, and twice the size. It has handled well splitting wood and the sheath they came with is decent quality. Only thing that would make it better is one-piece construction.
I bought this after reading an independent review that gave the model good praise. And it is made in the U.S.A. from one piece of forged steel, which I liked (both facts) for durability. Unfortunately, after taking it out on a camping trip and having used it a bit, I realized it was not very sharp "from the factory," which obviously can be cured with a sharpening tool. But, what cannot be cured is the fact that the handle has a warp in it! I was shocked that something like this would be produced - and pass quality control - with a warp. By which of course I mean, if you look at it from handle butt to axe head, it is not a straight line. So, now I will be looking for the receipt to see if I can return it.
